Hi everyone, shooting targets are great and all but trying to get into hunting. Anyone in the ottawa area wouldn't mind me tagging along and learning the ropes?

Well hunting season for the most part won't begin until Sept sometime, but keep an I out as sometimes people on here are looking for someone to head out with.
Yup I will take you anytime I go. I duck hunt all fall every weekend, small game and deer. I have taken many new hunters out over the last 3 yrs. 613-863-5483 text me with your contact info and once small game season opens in Sept join me anytime. I will show you all the crown land (public legal areas) areas in Ottawa.
Mark
line052 - good on you brother for making yourself available to help out a new outdoorsman. Your experience in the field will pay dividends to a new hunter. Nice pay back.
No worries guys, 22,000 acres of crown (public) land around Ottawa, lots of opportunity for everyone. As small game opens keep my number handy.
line052 is for real. He helped me a lot.
Monitor these forums into September and watch for (hopefully) an Ottawa area breakfast/get together. You'll meet a lot of good people many of whom don't mind sharing their wisdom.
Good to see lots of new people getting in to the sport!
Last year we had two newbys in our deer gang. Both got a deer.
Hi All,
I'm in the exact same position.
Last I hunted was in highschool up in Northern Ontario (I'm much older now,)...mostly rabbit and small game birds (went moose hunting, but got nothing). I just got my hunting license some weeks ago and waiting on my PAL to go through the process, which I expect to wrap up in August sometime
To put no fine point on it: I want to hunt but I have no friends to hunt with nor do I know where to go in the Ottawa area. I'd love to tag along if any of you go out for small game birds or turkey this fall. I don't have much to exchange for such a privilege besides my company...but I do make my own wines (...strawberry, peach and some pino noir...), so maybe I could bribe you with that :P
Anyway...I'll keep tabs on the forum here some September and see what the low-down is.
Ultimately, my goal is to eventually shoot deer and turkey with a bow. That....looks like a great way to hunt.
Thanks,
tcs
There are places to hunt around here and I don't mind taking you out in the fall. Hopefully you receive your PAL by September. Stay tune to this forum there are others here in Ottawa on this site that take people out.
Occasionally we get together and have a breakfast in Kemptville, usually at the 5 Star probably be one early September
Very kind, sir. I'll keep an eye out. Thank you.
Hi,
I've been a reading member of this forum for a while and just saw this thread. I live in Ottawa and also would like to get into hunting. I got my PAL, the outdoors card and some equipment and have been to the Stittsville shooting range. Just feeling overwhelmed by the first steps it takes, especially finding a place where it is legal to hunt around Ottawa. It would be great to get to know some hunters in the Ottawa area willing to show a newbie how to get started.

May I suggest.

Anyone who wants to go with me I am good to go, my cell is up higher in the post. Add me and send me a text. I can show you all the areas I hunt on crown land and give you a tour of the crown I hunt.
Once small game/duck opens I am in the woods every weekend in my truck camper. All the roads leading into my locations are generally safe for cars, last year Honda civics made it in all year. You do have to pick you way through some of the rougher road parts, because of rocks. I have not been out yet to assess the road and pond conditions in the Marlborough forest tracts yet as the gates do not open until 1st weekend in Sept.
To give you an idea of a typical weekend. I am not a service or business, just really enjoy good times with safe and dedicated hunters.
Arrive Friday afternoon and set up Truck camper, pop up shelter, BBQ, cleaning station on site and the following routine applies every weekend until deer season. Set out decoys and leave in place as I stay all weekend on the same ponds.
Fri - Eve - Duck hunt til dark, supper movies, fire, refreshment or 2.
Sat Morn - Duck AM, off ponds at 9-10, big breakfast/brunch
Sat - Late morn - early afternoon - road hunt for small game, rabbits, grouse and wild edibles
Sat - Eve - Duck hunt til dark, supper movies, fire, refreshment or 2.
Sun Morn - Duck AM, off ponds at 9-10, big breakfast/brunch (depending weather might stay for road hunt but generally leave after breakfast.
Accommodations - I have a truck camper..The top bunk is mine, the table bunk is available, as well as the floor. You can bring a tent if wish, many have in the past two yrs.
Water transport - I have: to use and share. ( I have limited life jackets so use at own risk, plus 5 paddles)
12 ft duck boat
12 tinner
14 ft canoe (all camo)
The ponds I hunt have deep channels, tall reeds with some areas where you can stand in reeds beds. However, I suspect this year with high water, I will not be able to stand in reeds more than likely boat shooting (pulled up on reed beds for more stability) No pond is longer than 150M in length.
Widest distance across ponds is 30 M, except one which is unlimited.
Food, BYOB, Ammo, guns, camo, and licenses. I ask that everyone prove they are legal hunters to hunt with/together me. I will always show mine.
I always have a 20 cup coffee percolator pot of coffee on to provide before and after hunts. I have coffee cream and sugar. Bring a cup, but, I do have dollar store cups as well. If you come often, a donation of sugar or paper coffee cups would be appreciated. No toilet, but the woods and I carry TP all the time, and have a shovel if needed.
Food wise, if you are staying the weekend, you are responsible for your own food stores. I have a full spice rack, and all the normal condiments to share or bring your own. I have a BBQ, propane burner for fries (big) and a stove in camper all propane. I also have a two burner naptha stove for extra cooking stations. I have propane lanterns as well for at night. But generally the fire provides enough light for outside. Wood scraps from building sites I collect during the week. Any that you bring helps as well.
I have a 5K Genny that I run during heavy uses, but my camper is off grid with solar power and battery storage for charging phones and stuff.
I am into having a few drinks, but frown on heavy hung over and unsafe activities at anytime. If you are a safety hazard to yourself, then you are to others as well. Like to make sure that does not happen.
I cook many a meal out of duck/goose on site and a few can attest to the meals, Cream, red wine reductions, coconut duck meals are quite regular. All meals are served over bed of white rice. Typically ingredients are onion, peppers and carrots as veg additives. Please feel free to offer your own recipes, and cook your Fav meal for others.
One of my buddies is the Head Chief at the Chateau Laurie..if he comes out you are in for a treat in cooking.
One meal is always a steak for me, I bring one each weekend. Bacon and eggs, cereal what ever. Like I said, I have everything needed to cook about 4 meals at once (burners), and plate up to 8 people at time. Lots of cooking stations to use to help with meal preps.
Most that come out get into the spirit and help with all the work and cooking.
Last point, there is bears in the area and they have visited all sites I go to. I have never had a bad bear encounter, but I am always armed, except at camp or after dark (legally).
Like I said early, stay the weekend, or show up for a morning hunt or evening and leave. Some guys have kids and are just happy to get out for morning/eve hunt. The coffee is always on, it is about hunting, learning and sharing good times with others.

You are a good person. Sounds like so much fun, it makes me want to drive the 7 hours up to join you. Keep up the good work and enjoy your weekends.
I would love to join a weekend hunt. If ever I get a chance soon then I will send you a text and meet up at the site. I did a bit of rabbit hunting in Marlborough forest this past winter and found a few nice ponds for duck/geese. I even camped overnight in a hammock in February with my brother in law last year..lots of deer sign in those cedars..Do you enter off Paden Road?
I used to go off Paden to the ponds I hunt in that area, I find using heaphy road better now. The "bridge" at the pond is an ATV/Sled bridge...I would not drive a very across it, much less my F250 with camper. I have seen cars and truck drive across it...it only has a plywood top over the beams. I have gps co-ords for each spot and directions wrote out that I can send.
I will be curious to see how the marsh (reed beds)has shifted this year with high waters. I suspect it might be difficult to access the pond edges with high the high waters.
I am going to keep bumping this to the top. And other points.
-I have 3 outdoor chairs.
-Water for washing dishes comes from the ponds. If you need to shower, I have the shower in a bag, you heat up water in the big burner, grab a tarp and go shower...trust me..you don't want to fall into the muck..you will need to shower.
-Drinking water needs to brought in. For coffee water, I have a 5 gallon blue jug...go thru lots of coffee on weekends...lol
-Walmart 24 pack of bottled water is $1.88.
-I burn all paper and burnable garbage and have garbage on site, they get locked up at night.
- Decoys I have 12 bigfoot land geese, 32 floater mallards and wood ducks, 1 floater goose. If you have deks, then bring them. I have enough for one pond but will split up to cover two ponds.
- it has been my experience, that those who sleep in camper...sleep hard and snore (me too), bring earplugs.
- The back seat of my F250 is 6ft across and has been used to sleep in...see above point..lol
- I have 2 of each goose/duck calls
- The Primos cheap calls at CTC work, I have Capital Waterfowler goose/duck for long distance turning, but generally stick to cheap calls (as ponds are 70% pass/40% call patterns). If you are a caller, great, if not I can teach.
- 3 life jackets only - If you have one or access to bring it. It is surprising how many people fall out.. Excitement, or non familiar with canoes.
- A change of clothes...in case you fall in, step on a solid weed bed..then go up to crotch on muck..everyday....
-the camper has a heater, and works great to dry even duck coats and duck boots..if you can stand the smell in camper of nasty wet swamp/sweat socks. Better to hang dry footwear..
-a spare pair of boots, or hip waders. I only use CTC Muck Boots, and buy felt extra liners, and silver colored inserts at Dollar store. 10 packs (felt pads/liners) for $20.00, cheap and burnable. You do not need to be high tech. The felt liners that (boots), come with dry quickly.
-I have no music on my phone, or stereo for camper. I like it but don't bring me. Love all kinds of music.
- I have yet to be visited by a CO, so ensure to have a cheap gun sock (after dark), or a floating gun case...just saying...magnets work well to retrieve sunken guns.
-the swamp muck on edges...is deep...like crotch deep
Chewy, I will not forget you finding my goose shells out in the bush and returned them. Pro Patria Brother. Look forward to sharing a few with you and maybe knock dome ducks down.
Bump to top. Excited for my own trip to Alberta hunting in 4 days. You wont see on this forum after the 5th Sept until I return on the 17 Sept. After that, the next weekend is duck opener. Man I can't wait. I love the fall, the woods, the good times shared, nature at it's finest.
These are incredible times for hunting!!!!
Roger MikePal
Can you keep this post bumped to top when I am gone or link if new hunters what in.
Bumping this again. Just lurking and hoping to meet y'all soon.
I got out to the ponds on Sunday and was worried about the high water changing the structure of the ponds. To my surprise they have not changed in borders (pond outline) at all. Lots of Rice on one pond, and old duck blind is still intact. The main ponds are full of life and food. Seen my first Diver duck on one (Red Head). Learned my Leopold Bino's main focus ring is broken...good thing I still had a spare set in truck.
All the road systems have survived with no real washouts. The berry crops are best I have seen in years. Seen two groups of turkey babies, which I thought was strange. Must have been two nestings this year with lots of rain. The food cover is the best I have seen in 3 yrs.
Should be a great year for small game.
As I said earlier, I am away 6-17 Sept (Alberta) and wont be on these means until then. If you know of anyone looking to get out, just refer them to this post.
Have fun during early goose, be safe, shoot true and honor the kill.
Mark
do you know how deep the water is in the ponds? Would someone need a boat/canoe or would a good pair of chest waiters suffice if shooting from shore?
The ponds I've been on with line052 are too deep to wade through., You could shore hunt but it'd be dicey retrieving downed ducks. A small canoe or kayak is enough to get around if you have access to one.
If hunting with line052, he usually has a canoe with him (I can't make promises for him.) He's ferried me around (and others.) I bring a little pelican kayak on my car to avoid being a nuisance.
I was in there scouting this past Sunday and quickly realized the ponds off Heaphy road are pretty deep...I would most likely be hunting from shore, unless I could mooch a ride with Line052 but, like you, I don't want to be a nuisance...I have a solid dingy that i'm contemplating using for short distances if I get some birds down over water.
You can always swim to retrieve a duck or goose. I did that once in early Nov don't think I'm doing it again.
I guess it all depends on the size of the goose or duck...lol
No dog ? Take along a small cheap packable fishing rod and reel with a floating lure, cast out and retrieve your duck or goose.
I am back. I will have to use (at your own risk)
12ft Duck boat kayak (mine +1)
12ft Tinner (Camo)
14ft Old Town Canoe (Camo)
I have 3-4 life jackets, so bring one if you have one. The center channels are up 12ft deep, the edges are deep muck and nasty if you fall or step up to your(####).
I will be in spot/location Friday by 3pm (staying until Sunday) if anyone wants to join me. The offer is still open and I welcome any hunter all weekend.
Friday night is basically a camp out night and checking of decoys and gear. Legal hunting does not happen until 30 minutes before Sunrise on Saturday Morning.
Text me for location. 613-863-5483
It will be hot, hot, hot this weekend so bring light clothing. Bug spray will be required or if your camo is good. Not required. Light shirts and pants, face camo mask or grease. I wear a mask and it does a good job of keeping bugs off me.
Geese will be mainly fly out (morning) and Fly in (night). Lots of action during that time. The Paden road pond is high and the blind is still good to use.
My wife's "official" due date is today but I have a feeling she will probably deliver later this week so that rules out a weekend hunt for me. But I will text you once everything is settled down and I can get out for a hunt...I look forward to meeting up with you and some of the people on this forum and have some quality time in the outdoors...
Lets hope all goes well, and you can get out. The first weeks are hard for sleep with a new one. Hopefully you can get out. The offer stands until the ponds freeze over. From then it will be deer hunting routine and weekends for small game until I can't get the truck into woods.
Bump to top. I cannot be reached after 12 on this means. If you need to contact me call my cell at 613-863-5483. All packed and loaded except guns and food.
Small Game opened on the 15 Sept for most everything. I will try to get in a coyote hunt, and some crow hunts this weekend as well.
We're going to have to plan a yote hunt here in my back yard...I'm seeing them 2-3 times a week on the neighbours feild. Driving my dogs crazy at night, they come right up to the barn.
Time to thin that pack out a bit :)
Oooh, that would be fun!
Great hunt, great people, great breakfast meeting on Sunday. Hunting season 2017/18 is on.
Bump to Top
Just wanted to chime in and say that Mark is the real deal!
Buddy and me where able to join him this last weekend and it was an amazing learning experience for a first time hunter.
Showed us signs, told great stories and even made breakfast.
This is the kind of stuff that makes you believe in the good of humanity again.
Thanks again Mark, you are one of the good folks!
best,
Andreas
(let me know if you want me to post this into a new thread, I'm not sure how much advertisement for your kindness you want!)
Thanks guys, my pleasure to help out. Everyone has been great thru the camps I have held. A total of 21 new/first time hunters through the Duck Camp, small game and deer signs. Got some wild edibles hunts in as well. I can honestly say, no safety issues, couple of people stayed overnight in tents as well. Everyone wanted to learn and participate. Two weekends ago I had two men drive down from Markham Ontario to spend the day. Had 11 for the morning hunt, they brought steaks, shrimp, veggie platter and precooked Chicken Parm for supper (lots of refreshments). The generosity and help around camp for clean up was shared by all.
Next a mini deer camp with a few joining me for deer hunt, last week of rifle. It has been by far an amazing season.
