2 a.m ( I'm a nighthawk) , and I put the dogs out for their last pee, before I go to bed. . Both attack a skunk! Huge ruckus , I see neighbor's lights going on. Two hours later I think they are clean enough to bring into the house. They are happy, happy today; I'm exhausted. :)
(Found the skunk dead on the front lawn this morning.)
Must be the season? I was lucky last night as I saw the little bugger before my fearless ( and dum! )husky did. Otherwise it would have been a late night also.
I can see The JRT but I would expect the Setter to point and laugh. Hopefully they learned their lesson.
That smell you don't notice anymore, you may be nose blind. Consider getting it tested for rabies?
Hmmm Never thought of that. I'll call the vet Monday. . Thanks.
(We're going to bring in a friend to check for nose blindness. :) )

Sharon, I've kept a bottle of Nature's Miracle 'Skunk Odor Remover' on hand since a kind lady at the pet store introduced me to it 20 yrs ago. Best stuff on the market for neutralizing skunk spray. Works wonders at getting the dogs cleaned up so they can come back inside.

Yep, what I use along with tomato juice sometimes. For a long time we had a cat named Oreo and a dog named Cookie.
They were a troublesome team with skunks around and many an hour was spent cleaning them after their escapades.
They never did learn. Cat disappeared at the house in the States(likely coyote?) and the dog died of old age.
Just to increase understanding and grasp my post, have you ever tried to bath/wash skunk scent off a cat?
It is sort of like trying to kiss your elbow, it can be done eventually with enough pain and effort, but it's never really worth the trouble.

The old peroxide and baking soda mix has worked for me. Luckily the dogs don't get skunked often. :)

We picked up some spray from our vet when we were in Guelph called Thiotrol. It worked really well the 3 times Holly has decided to play with Skunks. One key point I was told - was use cold water. Never use warm water, as it will activate the skunk oil & will set it deeper.

There is definitely a spike in the skunk population this year and my GSP got his first stink shower a few weeks ago. I have to get me one of them bottles and keep it handy as well...

We had a couple of dogs sprayed this month alone just among my neighbours in Burlington and when I am out running the dog we see see skunks about 1 time in 10 just lately. I was incredibly luck to not have my Brittany sprayed about a month ago. Her bell quit ringing so I caught up to her and found she was pointing the skunk and way, way too close. The skunk, thank god, backed away but the dog got excited and began to move on the forest kitty. By just dumb luck I had the Brittany on the e-collar and when she did not respond to the whoa command she got a serious reminder. First and only time I had to turn the collar up outside of a deer chasing incident.
I circled back around had the dog "accidentally" find the skunk again and like magic she didn't show any interest and she has not cornered one since. Thank-you Dogtra :-)
