Hunting deer near farms etc. Pesticides and herbicides ?!?

Hi folks. As I delve deeper into this hobby and tradition I find myself asking many questions to fellow hunters. A very seasoned hunter and friend of mine mentioned many hunting opportunities in my own backyard. My door to door soliciting will begin soon if not for this year to set my self up for spots next season. I have a property I hunt with a friend of mine so this year isn’t that detrimental.

I am beginning my R n D for hunting and I was curious about hunting near or on farms and the contamination of meat due to herbicides and pesticides. If deer are feeding, drinking and sleeping around large farms wether it’s corn, soy etc... I’m curious if it’s safe to eat.

I do eat meat from grocery stores like most and I also buy my veggies like most, however, these things are tested and controlled. Nobody is doing safety standards on deer ha ha ha. Very interested in hearing what people have to say!

Myself, I don't worry about it, because deer are browsers and eat very little of what is normally fed to beef cattle , hogs and chickens , there are more pesticides ingested by/in what you buy and eat from grocery stores ie; fruits, veggies etc. than by the amount of wild game you consume.

Sometimes in life the adage Ignorance is bliss applies. I'm sure there is some agency out the monitoring game much like fish and if there was a concern a consumption guide would be put out. If though you are so concerned you can drop that deer off at my place and I'll slowly dispose of it down the sewer.

I love when people claim their venison is "Organic" ha ha ha

I have no more concerns than anything else, not enough time in life to freak out about something like that.

I wish I ate enough venison to be concerned though.

I think he is asking how far your knowledge of pesticide and herbicide usage goes, if you were on a farm or your family were farmers that would not be a grave concern of yours.

I get where you are coming from but the type of sprays that are put on now are tested like crazy, I would not be concerned about them too much, I would not be spraying them into the wind and standing down wind but the residual content is not that great, 1 rain and it is all gone, that is why you have to spray on a dry and calm day. On top of that beans and corn now is roundup ready, meaning that there is a gene in there that allows you to spray round up over top of the grown plants and not kill them, this actually really lowers the amount of sprays required throughout the year.

I am a lot happier eating the food now and drinking the water than I would have been back in the days of DDT and other proven deadly contaminants from the good old days.

True. Very true. As my family grows I am starting to pay way more attention to what we purchase and where it comes from. I care about what my children eat. Maybe I’m being over precautions for that reason and as I get more and more interested in hunting I can’t help but wonder these things as I am more aware of what we eat now.

Deer meat can’t possibly be worse than cattle, pork and poultry the way we raise animals nowadays

Mh 1001 - deer eats what cattle eats,pigs eat,chicken eat.BUT deer eats many other things those other animals DO not have a chance to eat(natural browse mostly).Deer has no antibiotics,has lean muscle mass,and the deer uses its muscle to its purpose....while caged-fenced animals do not/can not.The fact that the deer is not tested for things like pesticides and herbicides ?-i am no expert but farmed animals are not tested for that either.I believe. The vet and his stamp means other checks on the store bought meat ........So as long as the deer has no other illness,infection,sickness or injury what would render the meat not safe(for which you should test the venison , if you are concerned)-it is still better then farmed meat ,full of antibiotics,with weak muscle mass,beside all the herbicides and pesticides they "share "with the wild deer while eating the same crop.Again-no expert,just sharing my opinion.You do what you think is right ........

This is an excellent explanation....period. MH1001,relax and enjoy any wild game meat that comes your way. The one thing wild game meat is NOT,is genetically modified and packed full of chemical preservatives like so much food that's commercially grown and sold as "fresh". Honestly,it's a wonder we don't all glow in the dark with the crap that's in grocery stores these days.

Here's a link to an article regarding deer eating habits. While deer do eat some cultivated crops, their main diet is browse and weeds. The main thing to remember is deer eat a little bit of everything and rarely ingest just one type of food. Interesting that deer eat poison ivy!

Deer will eat just about anything that's why I have a 7 foot fence around my garden and have to put netting around my landscape bushes each year - otherwise they eat the plants down to nothing - down here the thing we have to worry about is CWD - it has been discovered in the southwestern part of the state and if things go as they did in other states this disease will spread - for years we were told that humans in all likely hood would not get this disease but recent studies made by some Canadian group using monkeys that were fed diseased meat got sick - it makes your brain look like a sponge - now people are worried about eating deer meat in those areas where the disease was found - in fact some butchers are no longer handling deer meat because they don't know if some hunter brings in a deer shot in the diseased area

The game commission has put large containers throughout the diseased area where hunters can deposit the heads of deer they shot with contact information - these heads will be examined to determine if the deer examined has CWD - the testing does not cost anything - results will be known in about 2 or 3 weeks - in areas where the disease has not been found you can bring your deer head to certain locations for drop off - testing will cost about $70 - if this disease appears around where I hunt I would be relucant to eat the meat anymore - paying $70 and needing to wait weeks before I know if I can eat the deer meat wouldn't work out well

Finding out some great info [emoji106]. According to the trustworthy government of Ontario they claim no cases of CWD have been found in Ontario ha ha ha ha. Basically flat out denying it exists in the province. Maybe it’s true. Maybe it isn’t. But can you imagine the economic impact of people were to stop hunting ?

trimmer21 the deer we eat is no more genetically modified than the beef at the grocery store, it is of no benefit to bring in misinformation to cloud the situation, this is what all the special interest groups do to confuse people. Every organism is genetically modified as it is a product of it parents thus being genetically modified, the real only non genetic modification is cloning or in some species that can reproduce on their own. If a product at the grocery store has a % protein on the label it will have other things added to it like water, salt or preservatives but the steak your butcher cuts for you will be meat, my point being not all purchased food is created equal. I will agree there is a ton of junk for sale at the grocery store but we have one of the safest, most abundant and cheapest food supplies in the world we don't have to bash it to make venison seem better, I eat a lot of venison because I like it and believe it to be very safe for myself and my family simple as that.

Farmers are not trying to kill you, who would they sell to then?

All this crap is fear mongering, everything is modified, everything we eat is both organic and GMO, those are natural things, the venison is packed full of chemicals and hormones as well, you just don't know how much because nothing is ever tested on wild game.

Gotta love all the fear based marketing out there that people believe in. If you've been convinced that our food, especially our meat is full of chemicals, additives or whatever then that just adds to the confusion and mis-information that those not connected to farms pick up on. Places like A&W and others that rely on fear-based marketing drive me nuts. They should work on educating consumers, not scaring them away from their competitor with fear marketing just to claim those dollars. I feed my family game meat, because I hunt and we like it. I feed my family beef, pork, chicken and such from the grocery store, or buy it from my inlaw's farm, again because we like it.
We are lucky in this society that we have the means to pick and choose our diets based on production methods and marketing, instead of wondering where our next meal will come from.
If you hunt you have a way to put meat in the freezer you may not find otherwise.

Every living thing has "chemicals"(reminds me of the old dihydrogen oxide joke) and hormones in it if it didn't it wouldn't be alive simple as that, we also have to be aware of what we see in the media as farming practices are not the same everywhere and rules in Canada are different than rules in other countries. Most farmers care about the animals they keep and the products they produce, healthy plants and animals are more productive. We need to understand that chicken nuggets are a lot more than chicken and I don't even want to know what is in something like a twinkie but I bet a small amount of it comes from a farm. Lets not confuse real food with what we primarily see on grocery store shelves.

Thank you, this is the point, hormones and chemical are normal, we test like no other in this country, I would trust our beef here over many other countries and I can tell you for certain that wild venison has the potential to have a lot more nasty chemicals in it than farmed, simply due to the lack of containing the animal, but that does not mean it is unsafe at all.

A&W are idiots, they claim they are all high and mighty but what they are talking about with their lack of antibiotics means every egg in Canada, there is a withdrawal time on antibiotics and if any chickens have to be given them they cannot be used for egg production for a period of time. We also do not use hormones in any dairy cattle in Canada, additional hormones are only allowed in beef cattle with again a withdrawal time.

Remember people, farmers are not trying to kill you and venison is as organic as any livestock and as non-GMO, no wild venison would ever be considered "certified organic" as they have access to "non-organic" feed.

I hate that work organic, in reality it means based on carbon, which everything we eat is carbon based and therefore by definition organic.

What we see on store shelves is real food but your definition of real food is not correct. What you mean is that you do not consider anything that you cannot put back together into the plant or animal.

If I said I was going to put Celery extract into meat would you be ok with that? What about Sodium Nitrate? They are both the same thing, Celery extract is used as a "natural" preservative and Schneiders was actually sued because they labelled their products containing this as "no preservatives".

Fox, point taken, in my mind I was thinking of the heavily processed foods with high levels of sodium, refined sugars and bad fats. Again not saying these products are all bad as they are derived from agricultural products but the percent of shelf space these type of products take up are disproportional to the amount of healthy consumption levels. Kinda like beaver caster gland extract or castoreum being used as "natural flavouring" in root beer and other products, yup that's pretty natural but I will keep my consumption levels low. Sorry for the highjacked thread.

I didn't see it mentioned..but lets not forgot, but the problem with Wild Game meat (Deer and Moose) in some parts of the province is that the are contaminated with things like Cadnium from polluted soil. Just being 'Wild' is not a guaranteed it's healthy for you.

All the warnings over the years, have all pertained to " organ meats " in some parts of Ontario.
I highly doubt that any hunter has been able to consume enough liver heart or kidneys from deer or moose to the extent that eating them will shorten his/her life considerably.
Going to " Mac Donalds " for most of your meals has more of a health risk would be my thought on the subject, just look at all the obese people , young and old that waddle in and out of "rotten ronnies ".

This is a really interesting thread with many really good inputs,and even more opinions.If we look at the pure difference of the wild game-like deer versus a farm raised cattle per say(the situation with pigs and chicken is even further from their natural way of living -since they are mostly caged off thru their life span)lets try to list the differences between the two,and also the similarities.

Venison-lean muscle mass,cattle-depends on the way the cattle was raised,it may mean some or very little movement(fence-cage)thus deer has "real"muscle mass,while cattle has softer tissues,weaker muscle etc,which may impact the taste of the meat,but otherwise no "health impact"on consumer.
Cattle eats a lot (or)inclusively feed,which is from farms,and we all agree farms use fertilizers,herbicides(and a bit )of pesticides-deer eats some of that,for sure(soy,corn etc)but deer eats other stuff(mast,soft mast,twigs,flowers,leafs etc)and a LOT of it,where most of the food source has no pesticides and very little or no chemicals(bushes are not fertilized or sprayed by any one-we can agree on that)thus deer's diet is while being a mixture,contains a whole lot less chemicals then farmed animals do.
Other chemicals-cadmium,air borne pollutants etc,from the soil(polluted ages ago)or fresh- we must admit both the deer and the cattle is exposed to them.This being relatively equal is kind of a wash.We can ignore regional differences,because they may work both ways..........
Man made Antibiotics-cattle is exposed to it,deer is not.Period.
Hormones-while there is much debate about hormones,the food industry does use growth hormones on a lot of farmed animals,while deer is never exposed to it.Time allowed for hormones to "leach"out from the farmed animals is great,but it does not eliminate the fact that those animals were exposed to them,and the real health impact is debatable.The deer does not have this issue-therefore with the venison there is no debate if artificial growth hormones are Ok or not OK. Lets leave natural hormones out from the equitation-they both have natural hormones,so that point is a wash(if not moot)
Our food we buy in stores must be good ,because it is checked,inspected on many levels.Yet it contains many thing we may know about,or not.It may not kill us,but it can make us develop some "unusual"health issues.May not.......... Venison however is not tested,therefore can potentially be a health hazard(mostly bio hazard-infections,infectious diseases,etc)however the meat itself is a lot closer to a "natural"state of a meat,as it was for millions of years.Good or bad-i am not saying,just explaining the pros and the cons.
Next step up on a healthier more natural meat would be the moose meat(no pesticied,little herbicides,no growth hormones,pure nature-minus some air borne pollutants)But hey-where is our moose by now, to benefit all of us from the healthy meat..............

I am no "green"nor own any interest in any health food- or A&W ,or so on.
However the deer lives and feeds "almost"as it lived/fed millions of years ago,and our cattle does not. The rest of the topic is good for a healthy debate........

Let me tell you what I think - I'm not a farmer but I live in farm country and have talked to and visited a lot of farms - when going through a hog farm sometime ago - in the building that housed the little pigs and their mothers where was a large table full of large syringes - the farmer told me that he had to keep his piglets safe by giving them antibiotics - also told me that the business was very competitive and that he had only a couple months to get the pigs up to a certain weight in order to make any money - so he gave the pigs growth hormones - then there is the potato farmer - he sprayed the field with weed killer before planting the potatoes - then sprays twice for bugs diseases while the potatoes are growing - then he sprays to kill the vegetation before he digs up the potatoes with a big machine - then the potatoes are sprayed again so they don't sprout while in storage - then there is the turkey farmer who has to feed the turkeys food with antibiotics so they don't get some diseases that would wipe out his whole flock - are you going to tell me that all this spraying and injections are not going to do harm to humans over time - Sure most farmers don't want to harm people but the bottom line is that they got to make sure that they have something to sell otherwise they are out of business -

I remember years ago being in a barber shop and a potato farmer was in the chair - we got talking about spraying potatoes for bugs and diseases - this farmer say that he puts a systemic spray on the field that enters the potato plant so he only needs to spray one time - when we say that if the spray gets into the plant it probably gets into the potato - he said that he didn't think so - the barber and I told him we sure wouldn't want to eat any of his potatoes - the bottom line is - raise your own food as much as possible
