Off topic: have you all noticed trees dying lately?

Hi guys. I don't really post much, but I'm siting a stand that sits in a woods I've been hunting for almost 20 years.
Over the last several years I've noticed alot of trees dying.
Sure, the ash and elm are a given...but I'm talking about 30-50 year old formerly healthy oaks (red and white) and hickory among others.
I've noticed this in several woods I've hunted locally (essex county ) and in middlesex and lambton. These are trees I've had stands near or in and have observed them over years and known them to be alive and vibrant.
I'm looking through the woods and seeing alot of dead trees where 5-10 years ago this wasn't the case at all.

Edit to add-I know it's fall and trees look dead but these trees are dead/dying. Bark falling off and branches breaking and/or woodpeckers and bugs starting. Among other decay signs.

Oak wilt is already confirmed in Michigan so most likely already in Ontario. It's going to be devastating. Not sure what our bush is going to consist of in a few years from know, but it won't be good.

Seed production has been very low in Ontario over the past two or three years, I have had to buy seeds from the US or go outside the province to collect the species I want (White/ Burr/ Swamp White). I suspect the warm dry spring weather has had an impact but that is only causal observation.

If the trees are 50 years old maybe they are at the end of their natural life cycle. That's why succession is important. Need to have trees of all ages to keep a healthy bush.

I know back where I hunt the ground has been very wet (flooded ) for 2 of the past 3 summers with record rainfalls . I think that some of the trees aren't too happy having wet feet constantly and are dying off.

But as useless says, trees have natural live span and die of old age.

Not a stretch to assume it's 'here'. The changing climate and the new way we get rain (either none at all or buckets all at once) can't be good for the native trees. Got to admire any wild tree that can survive the wild in this new reality of extreme weather. Then add on top all of the invasive species and disease.

Climate changes naturally and has been for billions of years. Plant life adapts and species dies out while it can be an opportunity for others that were dormant to begin to flourish. We cannot control mother nature even though the Liberals say we do. lol

You would have to be a fool to not have noticed the increased pace of warming and its related affects all over the globe.Climate changes naturally but not this fast,Liberals have figured out that dumping millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere is not a good idea.

You'd have to be a fool to believe the Liberals and all the rest of the global warming alarmists that think a carbon tax is going to have any effect on natural climate change. So many of their dire predictions have already been proven wrong as well as all the false data they used to try and scare the foolish. Anyone with a lick of common sense can see that it's nothing but a scam to bring in billions of dollars on the backs of regular folks.

I really wasn't going to get into it but has anyone realized it's only been getting warmer since the last ice age . Will start to cool down heading to the next one no thanks to the liberal taxes.

Most oak species have a life span of a few hundred years so those are still very young trees that you have dying off. I'd put my finger on some pest that you have.

Not all oak trees live long lives. Three years ago we had a massive crop of deer the last two years there was very few acorns.
Lots of bugs will get into them.

It's not natural for younger trees to go from lush and apparently healthy to stone dead and rotting in that short a time. 50 years is young for an oak... any oak.
I'm putting my monew on an invasive bug and or disease... the new weather patterns can't help either.

We in Canada are the biggest users of fossil fuels,that is a fact.Burning fossil fuels at the rate we have been doing Worldwide has an effect.When you turn on your telly and see hurricanes,tropical storms,ice caps,glaciers melting at such a rapid rate does it not cause you to ponder.Do you think Mr Harper being in bed with oil companies was for your benefit.Some people will probably have to see the roof blow of their home for the penny to drop.

Getting back to the OP,lake levels this year at their highest on the lake I use,large numbers of healthy trees toppled over in the bush because of the saturated soil and very high winds, some swamps a year ago that were bone dry now flooded.Beech tree,s diseased and dead.

The Liberals do not control the Worldwide community of scientists who have evidence of all this,I think I will believe them as opposed to naysayers on here who are no doubt Trump supporters as well.LOL

If you can provide pictures I can send them to a good contact I have at a local University for a more educated opinion, pics mid to late summer would be best. I myself grow some varieties and my contact is very good at helping me solve problems with the oaks.

Hey Gilroy - it just so happens that there were a lot more hurricanes years ago - in 2015 there were 4 - in 2005 there were 15 and in 1995 there were 11 - so using that information to say that things are getting bad because of global warming doesn't hold water - another thought - what is wrong with the planet getting warmer - you can grow more fruits and vegetables in places where you couldn't - you don't have to use so much energy to keep warm - nature will adapt to the warming climate like it has always done - so next time someone brings up global warming just say that it is a good thing - according to Al Gore New York city should be 6 feet under water by now - the guy made a lot of money spreading his BS - don't fall for it -

It could be a variety of reasons besides disease or insects. Doing a survey of the bush and surrounding area along with what possible changes to the landscape can cause die off. I have seen this happen a few times over the years when tile drain was installed in a farmers field that was naturally wet. The tree's adjacent started to die off as a result of the moisture that was now being diverted to the ditch. Which brings me to the other possibility. New roads, drainage ditches a change in the elevation,soil acidity changes can create this issue as well and have seen this type of tree loss. You would be surprised what seems as a minor change to the landscape can eventually cause this to happen. I was heavily involved in subdivision planning many years ago after graduating from college as a horticulturist. Part of my job was to survey potential subdivision sites to determine how the native tree's could be saved due to the above mentioned.

I've been "in the bush" most of my life. I can't say I see anything that alarms me. Sure the ash are taking a pounding right now, but pretty well all species have some kind of bug or fungus that attacks them. And if trees get into a weakened condition because of ordinary things like ice storms, extra-dry or soggy summers, then the plagues seem to have a field day.

Things get blown out of proportion nowadays and invariably are attributed to, and therefore support, the great AGW/Climate Change/Extreme Weather narrative that is enriching so few at the expense of so many.

As for fossil fuels.... Canada is tiny compared to many other countries both in producing and using, blame Harper and ignore reality as usual it seems, all while ignoring real issues Justlied is creating.

We aren't under a glacier and some experts have said the "manmade" global warming is delaying the next ice age so they are doing studies, going to Paris and writing papers instead of adapting and making real changes it seems to me.

What really makes me laugh, is that "experts" who can't ever get a 10-day forecast right want us to trust their predictions about what the global weather will be fifty or a hundred years from now.

The entire AGW/Climate Change/Extreme Weather story has been so utterly compromised by the likes of Michael Mann, the University of East Anglia, All Gore, Suzuki, and a host of other book-cookers and hypocrites that I have come to the conclusion that only a fool would accept the narrative without serious reservation.

We've had a pair of years that saw some very definite extremes.

2016 was one of the driest on record. It put a lot of trees under stress. 2017 was one of the wettest. Extreme ends of both spectrums are going to cause many trees that are living in less than ideal conditions to be lost.

My cottage is on a river, where we're currently looking at the entire river valley, and wondering how much deadfall we're going to see in the next few years ( most of the valley was brown by mid-Sept).

Around Sudbury the loggers are spraying Herbicide that doesn't hurt the pines... but kills the other trees.
