Nine members of one of the last surviving caribou herds in the Lake Superior region are roaming in some unfamiliar but safer territory this week. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has just completed the transfer of eight cows and one bull from Michipicoten Island to the Slate Islands offshore from Terrace Bay. The three-day operation concluded on Monday.
So shooting the wolves is out of the question? I guess, it will be politically correct, for them to starve to death.
Yes, a lot at play here and shooting/trapping the wolves just didn't make the cut. I understand it was an option but the backlash would have been too great.
yep could have saved many more of the caribou , if they had of looked after the orignal 4 wolves , instead of putting collars on them , now the last get to starve after they kill each other once the remaining caribou are depletedQuote:

After all the doomsday reports of how endangered they are and our managers allowed this to happen. And it was not disease or a sudden disaster, like a flood or something. Too little to late IMO. An open contract offer for bids to terminate the wolves back in the spring time would have save more lives
not to mention hundreds of thousands of dollars that could be better spent elsewhere. I can't imagine this plan was cheap.Quote:

I hope somebody with the know how jumps in and films a documentary on how the caribou wolf situation resolves itself. It would be great for the general public to see the final solution. I have a feeling it wouldn't make the Disney family viewing criteria.

I wish I was a fly on the wall at the MNR right now. They're all clanking their coffee cups and patting each other on the backs and telling each other what a great job and how successful the relocation of the 9 animals went. Only cost us $100,000 (if we're lucky) and some of them are up for pay raises and promotions!
Over time this will all go away! It always does.
We're Canadians so we'll just apologise, step back, and bend over when the next crisis occurs!
The article says the animals were moved to Slate Islands to help that herd recover from a previous wolf predation problem.
Seems like the wheel just goes round and round.
it's already been a rather cold start to the winter. I would get quite the chuckle if another ice bridge formed and some wolves crossed to slate island again. better move the caribou...Quote:

MNR looks like hero's saving the caribou from the wolves with the hope to return the caribou BACK to their island when times are better. BETTER? The only way for it to be better will be a total eradication of the wolves. How long does this plan require to play out? 5yrs? 10? We'll be 20 yrs away from getting the herd back to where they were 4 years ago.

I sure hope the wolf huggers from Wolves Canada and the coyote huggers see what's going on.
The idea that the MNR is interfering with the food supply of the wolves should have them screaming mad (or should I say howling).
I'm sure their wrath will get the wolves airlifted off also. Maybe they can take them for a fly over of Niagara Falls since they're in a helicopter anyways. Maybe wolves should be treated like the royalty they seem to have acquired.

I am against having the wolves die of starvation.... lets all put some money together and have some cattle shipped over or better yet... Wild boar :)

So the only reason the MNR did ANYTHING was because of extensive lobbying!

The lobbing was the First Nations desire (demand?) NOT to kill the wolves....which to everyone else was the most logical solution, so the MNR or more likely their political bosses, pandered to them.
The whole affair was needless...other that writing it off as a training exercise.
At some point common sense and the will to do what is right for the animals should prevail.
Activists, politicians, hunters, and natives, etc should have no say!
This is an endangered species and the MNR are the hired experts!
not some casual weekend hunter, not an Indian band leader, not some wack job animal lover, and not a here today gone tomorrow politician!
It's about time they turned their direction down the RIGHT path!
It saddens me to see the potential we have spinning down the toilet!
so many opinions on both side of the table, sometimes it is best not to interfere in nature in the first place!
