Alzheimer Prevention

I always had this thought - that drinking alcohol would keep the blood thin and help prevent such diseases like Alzheimers - thinking that thin blood would flush out the brain - well I see that a recent medical study appears to confirm that drinking a little alcohol does indeed prevent this disease - maybe vinegar would do the same since it also thins the blood - also garlic - when I hear that someone has Alzheimers I always try to find out if the person drank or not - so far I don't know of anyone that drank getting this disease - in fact the more a peson drank the sharper they seemed when they bit the dust -

If you go one step further and drink enough you will never have to worry about Alzheimer disease, smoking helps for that too.

joe, its ok to admit youve been drinking at 10am....we do care...

I'm gonna call BS on this one because two of my grandparents (one from each side of my family) who both drank at every family get together in memory, currently have different stages of Alzheimer's.

I think the hundreds of millions spent on research may have uncovered this little gem long ago if true

That is what new research is saying Joe, but many who drink get Alzheimer's Disease. Studies will need to continue. I have Parkinson's disease and roughly 50 % of Parkinson's people get dementia :(

Sorry to hear that Sharron, my uncle was just diagnosed as well with parkinsons. I know you may not be fond of marijuana from previous posts but it may be worth your time to look into using CBD to help with the shakes. Its a form of cannabis that does not get you high or give you any buzz at all, its one of the chemicals in cannabis that calms nerves and eases pain and is more associated with the medicinal aspect of the substance. My uncle has been using it in smoke and pill form and has had great results. If you google effects of CBD on parkinsons there are some videos showing drastic changes in people who use CBD. It wont alter your state of consciousness or make you feel weird. Before you make up your mind about it consider watching the videos below they are mind blowing, you may need some tissues...hope this helps you in some way.

Alcoholism has killed members of my family through strokes and liver failure, so yes, my comment is fair.

If you want to use alcohol to beat Alzheimer disease it is very possible, you can do it by drinking to excess over a lifetime and destroy your body.

I also have had family members with severe dementia and watched the brains of family members of friends rot away due to different types of dementia (Alzheimer disease is only one of many) and although it is hard on the family it is much easier on the patient than something like cancer. I was told once by a very smart lady that dementia puts you into the perfect state of mind, "you live for the moment, nothing in the past matters because you cannot remember it." It is hard when your uncle has no clue who you are but it hurts you, it does not hurt them.

Yes it is heartbreaking for the loved ones of those suffering from dementia or alcoholism as I have also experienced both in my immediate family and wish that no one else would have to go through it but I know that's not possible.

You are not wrong Dyth but as Sharon once so eloquently said regarding Jo PA that he is from a different time and was raised with different values that he still adheres to today. I can certainly see the wisdom in Sharon's words as my Grandparents were perhaps not as enlightened as we are today in our changing society.
It is easy to disagree with Jo as I said earlier but making fun of or picking on him seems rather childish and suggesting he drink or smoke himself to excess so he wont have to worry about living long enough to get dementia is just wrong imho . I think we should be better than that.

I spent 32 years working in long term care, mostly on a locked unit dealing with various forms of dementia. They cannot 'conclusively', determine if it is actually Alzheimer's that caused the dementia until an autopsy is done. I will say that dementia of any form can happen to anyone, it crosses the entire spectrum, monetary, intellectual, educational, cultural, racial, age, abstainers or drunks. I have dealt with early onset Alzheimer's in 40 year olds that never drank or smoked. They say that there is a genetics connection, it can run in families.

High stress levels can do it too, met a guy who was burned in an industrial accident, started to develop dementia only a few years later. When I met him he thought I was his grandson come to visit, I went with it, his grandson had not visited him in 5+ years.

I still say I would much rather lose my mind and therefore not know what was going on than lose my body and know that is was happening.

Being from a different time doesn't excuse ignorant comments and/or actions. Humans aren't robots who are programmed from birth. We have the capacity to change our morals and ethics. There are plenty of posters on this form who are the same age as JoePa and don't have the level of ignorance he does.

Exactly.

I can only speak to the people I know/knew. My grandparents on 1 side were ignorant of the world and people and had some bigoted views, the other side moved around and worked outside of the home, they never had a racism bone in their bodies, but some of their family members did. Those grandparents that did have bigoted views at one time learned from their kids and their grandkids and grew to realize that they were wrong.

My Grandparents were some what the same, when they first met my best friend ( still is to this day ) they had likely never met black kid before and referred to him as the nice little colored boy. They treated him well and enjoyed when we both came to visit and stay and fish for a few days as we would walk the Boyne from Flesherton almost to Eugenia where they would pick us up.
Anyway the way to educate and enlighten someone one who holds on to these ignorant views is through education and dialogue not by belittling, insulting , or shouting them down. That's likely why Trump is in the white house. Any way , carry on.

Thanks Joe, back in my grandparents generation when Incest was rampant and people just did not talk about it, when a woman was beat to within an inch of her life by her husband but it was frowned upon if she left him, ya, the good old days. So let me get this straight. In your previous post, you condemn the ills which have fallen modern life such as divorce, screwed up kids and adultery. Most of your political posts have praised Donald Trump. Why do you praise a two time divorcee as a result of adultery so many times?

Wow. That's quite the link. I'm all for THC for medical use and may try it some day. I am highly against any under 21 using this as their brain growth is not complete . I think the present 19 year old limit coming up federally is too low, but that's for another topic. :)

Donald Trump wasn't my first choice to run as the republican candidate because as you mentioned his character was in question - but since he has been in office and the things he has accomplished and the things he wants to do I think he will be a good leader - hopefully he has changed and realizes his past mistakes - best wishes -

Im glad you read it...its a shame theres treatments out there in all fields of medicine that are frowned upon or little is known about them because doctors are pushed by the big pharma companies to sell pills. Fully agree with the age limit thing and brain development...recreational use is much riskier and unknown then the medicinal applications.

Unfortunately for Alzheimer's theres not much known how its caused or how to prevent it...governments spending too much money dropping bombs and fighting wars when they should be fighting the war against disease and understand how to prevent them. Too bad the government is also in big pharmas back pocket.

I fully believe that the reason we have more occurrences or diseases like this is that we understand what they are and that we get up to an age that we will get these types of diseases. The human body is only designed to last so long, in their original environment humans would essentially have enough time to develop, have kids, raise them and then die, now people are getting to the point where they have great grand kids, this is pushing the limits of the human body and due to that more of these things are coming to light.

That being said, I do not think the percentage of these diseases is any higher but rather we now know what to look for and diagnose them more, the same with things like ADHD and Autism.

As to your point on big pharma, without big pharma you would have had a lot less of a chance to become an adult, just look at what our mortality rate has done, this is thanks to big pharma.

I believe that might be a part of it. I also think there is another component to it. In the animal kingdom, weaker members either die or don't pass their genes down to the next generation. As a species, we have no system to weed out inferior genetics (when I talk about inferior genetics, I am not talking about how 1940 Germany referred to inferior genetics). Looking at myself, my genetic background has heart disease, diabetes, cancer and a host of other undesirable genetic stuff that I have no doubt passed somewhat onto my children.

My Grandmother passed away last year, she had Alzheimer's before she passed. I saw her deteriorate over many years. It is a sad thing.

Ya, even go back to glasses, people who need glasses to get around now would have been eaten by a lion back at the dawn of man, our species has complicated things.

I had an uncle who had dementia, it was not Alzheimer's as they suspected but rather the result of a stroke that was not caught (They can only test after you die). It was sad for those around him but it was not sad at all for him and I think we need to focus more on the patients and less on ourselves. He was always a happy guy who was a smart A for sure. Sure he lost his ability to remember those who came to see him but he was always happy to meet someone and loved to talk their ear off about what happened to him "yesterday", although he thought it was the 60s. He recognized me as my dad and my dad as my grandpa, it was actually quite awesome to be able to talk to him as a 30 year old rather than a 70 year old, his perspective was entirely different. He had no concerns about being old or death, he was very much in the moment and very happy about it. On the flip side I lost my grandpa to cancer, 6 months of withering away and knowing exactly what was going on. I would never wish cancer on my worst enemy.

Personally I'd take physical over mental illness any day of the week.

Who I am as a person is located in my brain. The rest of me is fancy plumbing and a drivetrain. If my brain is swiss cheese I'd just as soon my body stop wandering around without me, stressing out my loved ones and eating their groceries.

Just start high risk activities if you ever are told you are terminal. I already told my wife that if something like this happens to me I will start racing motorcycles, not much to lose at that point.

In my career I had to work every day with people who had terminal something, the thing that most had in common is they all wanted to live as long as possible. Even those who pleaded to ' let me go', 'kill me please' usually changed their minds when that time approached.

Must of been hard to watch every day G , I know you become somewhat immune to it but sheesh that is tough .

Held the hand of hundreds of people, and was the last person they saw, as they 'shuffle off this mortal coil',.... it was never easy ,but for some it was a blessing.

I'm sure you've got me beat on experience, FMC, and I'm sure many who think as I do change their opinion when the time comes. I've known a fair share who wanted to live as long as possible, and a few who wanted to get it over with. Thankfully we now have the freedom in Canada to choose to expedite the process in certain circumstances.

As a member of a palliative care team, our goal was to enable the individual to pass as easy as possible, and insure no one died alone. What kept us going, was when with their last bit of strength, they squeezed your hand, and with their last breath, said, ' thank you'.

Iffy on that one.
Had the Duchene Muscular Dystrophy gene in my family. Two brothers died - one at 17 and one at 20. Awful thing to watch those boys go downhill.
When I got married , they couldn`t tell you if you were a carrier of the gene or not - now they can. ( women only carry the gene , males get the disease). I decided not to have any kids for that reason. The only solution was that if the baby was a boy you aborted. No thanks- I didn`t need a baby that bad.
Had many foster kids, so life was still great! :)
