Moving to Ottawa Area

Good day folks.

We'll I have to admit. I haven't been on much in the last month.

Long story short, I've had to make a change job-wise. So I've been very busy this last month.

The upshot, is that my family and I are relocating to the Ottawa area, so I'll be able to get out for the Eastern Ont breakfasts.

Looking at the life we lead in the GTA isn't necessarily what we wanted to be doing. Living and working in Orangeville was a nice luxury, but I refuse to commute 60-90mins each way just to afford to live where we do. Plus, it's not like I'd feel like driving out to the cottage on weekends after commuting all week.

We're looking at houses just outside Ottawa. It's amazing what you can buy up there vs. the GTA. My wife already has a FT job ( she works for TD), and I have taken a FT job working at Cabelas while I entertain a few other firms. Truth is, we'll have more disposable income, and zero debt other than a small mortgage by making this move. Oh, and the cottage is only 90 mins......

Welcome! Ottawa is a great city, much better than Toronto in my opinion, but I am biased, I'm sure. Should we expect to see you on the front lines of Cabelas or will you be doing something else?

Welcome to Ottawa!!!! Tough real estate market in the Kanata / West Carleton area - we bought here last year and I checked a couple of weeks ago - not much out there. But good luck - it'll be a piece of cake compared to the Toronto market. If you're looking farther out towards Arnprior, there's a lot more for sale.

Here you go lad. Over 38 acres on a corner lot a mile up the road from me. I've hunted deer, ran feeders and cams and had a bear bait on the property for two years till she got a bit antsy about it. It's all bush and some swamp. 25 minutes to Cabelas. :) Price has gone down twice from a start of 399K last fall. My daughter lives in Almonte and she was all excited about it for a while but they couldn't work it out. http://www.century21.ca/explorerreal...OLD_PERTH_ROAD

Unfortunately there is one Big caveat... :( It was built back in the day of super cheap hydro so there is no forced air system. I'm pretty sure that's why it hasn't sold yet. I know they burn wood too, with the one stove at least. It's really too bad because it's a great property with lot's of features. The back of the property actually continues for just under two miles without a road or home across the southern end of Wolf Grove.

Actually I'm working as the Maintenance Lead. Looking after the building and related works, but yes, I'll still be out and about.

Hey Werner. Actually we started looking at Smith's Falls, and then South of the City. However, we've now zeroed in on the Constance Bay area.

A little further out than we were looking, and about 50k above the budget I set, but that's incredible value.

Not a bad area, good ice fishing in the winter, close to tons of Crown land just to the west.

We are just south of Ottawa and make the commute in every day, it is worth it though to stay out of the City tax blanket. If you are looking for something in the city blanket and you want country freedom be sure to check the zoning, rural residential will kill you, not able to have chickens and I bet a bon fire pit would be out of the cards too. One woman at the market we are vendors at lived on 1 acre just inside the city limits, farmers fields all around here and the stink of liquid manure envelopes her home but she cannot even have one hen at her place, they are totally banned for her zoning, insane.

Welcome to the area, I grew up in KW and moving up here for school was the best thing I could have ever done.

Welcome to Ottawa. It will be great to finally meet you, hopefully you can join me on few hunts next year on the crown surrounding Ottawa.

So quick update guys. ( and thanks for some of the input).

We just bought a home in Constance Bay. Backing onto the Torbolton Forest. My son and wife have already met his teacher and some of his classmates.

I had to pass up on Cabelas job offer, as I had an offer come in from another firm more in my field, for more $$$.

House closes May 18. I'll be up there a fair bit between now and then regardless.

Good stuff, when you get settled send me a PM, I know a guy that goes out that way hunting quite often, he used to be on here but I have not seen him in a while. I can get you in touch with him, he can line you up with some ice fishing, soft water fishing, maybe a goose hunt or two.
