Deer Ticks found in S/W Ont already

I looks like it's going to be another bad year for ticks out that way. Time to see the vets and get your Dogs spring check up done and lay in the Bravecto/Advantix....

Not too shocking. As soon as temps are above freezing they're out. I'm trying to wait another week or so before busting out new seresto collars for the dogs.

Started my dogs on Nexgaurd a month ago already.

Pulled around 10 off of one dog and 5 off the other last weekend at the cottage. The ticks hadn’t started to set in yet, they were just crawling around the fur. We walked through a deer bedding area so my guess is that’s where we picked most of them up.

I would check them over again. The little buggers are stealthy and easy to miss.

They got the full treatment when they got home, warm bath and checked over with a comb. I think they enjoy the extra attention they get after a trip to the bush!

The tech at my Vet now does that also. Treats year round.

We leave the dogs on Bravecto year round now....just seems easier than worrying they may pick up a flea/tic during a winter thaw in Jan/Feb.

Pulled a tick off the brit today. I'll likely be going to year round Bravecto as well. Clearly the regular vet visit next week isn't early enough any more.

I agree. I actually bought my first dose of Nexgard online from Canadavet.

We switched out from Bravecto at the advice of our vet. It does not work apparently on the Lone Star tick.

Have they found the Lone Star tick in Ontario ? I heard they found a few out in NB, but that was a few years back..

Anyway...Bravecto still kills them, you just need to redose after 8 weeks instead of 12.

Yes, our vet indicated confirmed presence of the lone star in Ontario. We have moved to a monthly pill. I’ll check what it’s called. Apparently the Lone Star is more aggressive & will actively seek out and bite. This is also the tick that can cause it’s victim a subsequent allergic reaction/intolerance to red meat (human or dog)

FYI - the meds we have moved to is called Simparica. 1 per month

What website are you guys buying from?

I tried Nexgard last season after many years of great results with AdvantixII mostly based on Sharon's results and both dogs are on Nexgard again. No mess and completely effective. If I could take it myself I would.

We have an 8 month supply & cost was 20$ per month

Not that much cheaper. Unless i’m Missing something ????

I pay some more because I buy it from the vet. I believe in supporting Canadian businesses, and the vet gives me MANY a break on prices for other things for 2 dogs.

So pretty much the exact same price for Simparica that we got from our vet.

Up till last year we kept our dogs safe with 'Liberty50' from TSC in the states for $25 (CDN) for a 3 month supply. Same active ingredient (Permethrin) as Advantix...worked for many years.

We use a Vet in NY state and they include Braveco in the 'Summer Get Well' package so we switched over. Kind of nice not having to put oily drops onto the dogs.

Do you have any information about testing in Rondeau? We've got a family cottage in the park and spend quite a bit of time there in the summer and fall.

I pulled a receipt..Bravecto for a large (100lb) dog is $65 (CND) for 3 months thru the US Vet.

Never claimed it was cheaper. Depends on the weight of the dog of course -$20.00 per pill x 6months = about $120.00.

There used to be guys at the feed store buying it like that and spraying the foundations of the building on the farm/house...

I have never quite figured why you can't just take a large dog Bravecto tab, cut it in half and use the rest in 3 months for a smaller dog. The mg/kg dose works out fine.

Double check with your vet....I seem to remember (from when I worked in the feed store) that they were not safe for dogs or cats.

Spent the evening in emerg last night( all walk in clinics closed??). My husband had 4 embedded ticks - and I mean embedded. I could not remove them. 2 were on his face! The Dr said he was wise to come in - they were deer ticks . He got the appropriate antibiotics. Interesting place emerg. It was like PD Live in there last night.

EEEK! They're insidious, creepy, and increasingly dangerous. Glad you found them when you did. Regarding the ER, I can't imagine working in such a situation everyday. Kudos to those who do.

My wive was an ER RN for over 25 yrs (now retired) and we have a daughter who has worked 10 yrs as a PSW in the ER ...the family gatherings are filled with wonderful WTF stories...HaHa...

I'm going to knock on wood...but haven't had a tick bite (yet)....I soak my shoes and walking/hunting clothes in Permethrin spray and it seem to keep them off me.

The Bravecto seems to be working fine, 2 yrs now with 3 dogs and we haven't found a tick on them either....

Antibiotics didn't work. My man is now on IV antibiotics daily - nurse comes to the home. Take every precaution friends.

Sorry to hear that Sharon....was he diagnosed/tested for Lyme Disease or is the IV antibiotics for a site infection (cellulitis) ?

It's all very confusing.
Seemingly, once the deer tick is found they treat you as if you have lyme disease- antibiotics.They don't test for the bacteria.
Normally that's the end; you're fine.
However, if you get a spreading second degree infected rash( + cellulitis), they go to IV antibiotics. You are to watch for fever, headache muscle/joint pain and fatigue once the rash is gone. Those symptoms would confirm lyme disease and then you go on long term antibiotics.

Trying to diagnose lyme by symptoms would be tough - they come and go. By the time you have concrete symptoms its pretty bad. Also - to your list - numbness and irregular heartbeat. Those were the first two I noticed but at the time I didn't know they were lyme symptoms. I thought the actual test was required by district health units. Could be lyme is widespread enough now they don't bother tracking. Even after the antibiotics - it takes months for the symptoms to go away.

A good friend of mine has reoccurring symptoms about every six to eight months and has to go to the hospital for IV antibiotics. He has had this for the last six years as well as some of his other hunting buddies that got lyme disease all around the same time. I can always tell when he is not feeling well just by his appearance and looks completely worn out with a whole host of symptoms.

Makes me wonder why it's not available in Canada. It's clearly marked for your cloths and gear. It has the same active ingredient (Permatherin) and the same strength (.5%) as the Ultra Shield.

Hard to imagine Health Canada is very serious about the risks of Lyme disease when products like this are still banned for sale in Canada.

I ordered this product online from the states 5-6 years ago. They were not allowed to ship it to Canada. They said the only ones who could purchase it was the Canadian military. Health Canada wanted large money to approve it and they refused to pay, So like you Mike I just bought it at Walmart stateside

Didn't you know that " Big Brother " is looking after us, he/they know what's good or bad for us .

Years ago my dog got Lyme while using Revolution. Caught it early got her on meds and seemed she was fine. Switched to some other type of tick meds and never found another tick on her.

Glad you mentioned that! Folks need to know that REVOLUTION does NOT handle deer ticks in any way.
