Does anyone know what the bird nesting restriction dates are for training dogs in Ontario ? I went over the regulations three times and all I could find is that a training permit is required for training dogs or conducting field trials outside of hunting season but nothing about specific date clousure.
I don't think there is an actual date in the regs.

never seen one. My self imposed restrictions are May 1 to August 1.
The chart on page 80 has opening AND CLOSING dates for hunting. I follow those rules for training too , unless I am using my own birds ( pigeons etc..). The dog has to be "under your control" so I've assumed that to be close training.

Seems training is allowed in zone A prior to May 15 and after aug 1 in zone B prior to May 15 and after July 15 if its good enough for them its good enough for me.
I don't think there's a set rule but most people's personal date is April 15th. Technically running dogs on birds at any time of year out of season is against the law as any type of pursuing is considered hunting whether you're killing or not. However the date is the 15th. correct, no dates for training in ON, one has to get a permit from MNR (listing every property and WMU) if training on WILD birds in closed season, BTW all migratory birds (incl. wc) are federally regulated, so it'd involve the feds, good luck getting a permit from them. I agree. I have no personal objection to training on wild birds prior to their nesting and just before seasons open in the fall but I would not be posting about it on social media.

I think the key thing is intent Cass. If you are out walking your dog and he incidentally puts up game I don't think any judge would convict you. However, if you are actively looking for and seeking game I agree you are hunting and could theoretically be charged.Quote:

Woodcock will abandon their nests if harassed during incubation period and they've had a tough time as is already this spring from unfavorable weather. To suggest, advise or even hint that its ok to run dogs during this nesting period is not only wrong but disturbing and unethical. Doing it and just keeping quiet about it or not being charged is not the right answere. The issue is all about respect for wildlife and it's not just the authorities responsibility to protect it but as custodians it's up to each and every single one of us.
I understand the confusion. It would be beneficial if the regulations CLEARLY stated the rules for dog training out of bird season.

Where you will see restrictions to training/trialing is within various areas....Hullett Marsh for example where as the Friends of Hullett have described allowable training periods with dogs.

Dead ducks and blank shells being used. A father and his son barged in informing us we couldn't possibly we shooting in a PP and wanted things ended. As much as we tried to explain and suggest he visit the Park Superintendent, he continued to harass us. We tried to provide the purpose and value but he would not have any of that. The
OPP removed him.
Sidelock, you raised a reasonable question(s) about dog training and timing here in Ontario. Nothing wrong with seeking clear and accurate information, however you came on with accusations aimed at some folks that responded. Always better to get good facts and share with the group but consider how we do things.
