We have the 225 and love it .it's four years old now and we have not had any problems at all.
I had an '09 model at work and hated it.
Underpowered for its size (90hp) and it drank oil for breakfast. Literally a $50 dollar jug every ten days on the water. The service techs told me nothing was wrong with it, that it was using oil at its prescribed rate.
We used it for a few years and traded it on a 4-stroke Yamaha, couldnt be happier.
I have a 75.... I haven’t had an issue. Sips oil and gas. Trolls all day long without a miss. It winterized itself and needs service every three years. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one.
Probably the best warranty in the industry now. I had one years ago but repowered to a Mercury due to cost.
I have a 90 going on 7 years now. Don't think it goes there a jug of oil in a year. Take in every 3 years for service, so twice now. Winterizing takes 90 secs, so can be done many times it you decide you need to go out one more time. Very quiet and I believe very good on gas.
is there any smells of 2 stroke at all with the newer models ?
Are you looking at the etec or new G2? The g2 seems to be a better motor then the etec. I would get the g2 over an etec, but the g2 is not a cheap motor. I have a 150 Pro xs on my ranger, it's a great running little motor. I run about 50-60 hrs on the motor per season and use about a 10L jug of oil. If I had the option I would go 4 stroke. The merc 150 is a solid motor with very little issues. If you want a little more performance look at the Yamaha sho but again it's much more expensive. Best band for the buck is 150 optimax Pro xs it's putting out the most power at around 175.
The new g2 has 10 year warranty, but it had to. The older etec was so unreliable that they needed to offer an insentive to gain confidence back. But you're paying for the warranty in the premium price. You can get the opti Pro xs with 7 years extended warranty for a few thousand cheaper then 150 g2. And if you look wait until merc special offers you get 5 yr warranty standard like my Pro xs came with.
A 150 hp one left us stranded on Stag Island today due to being used for trolling in the St. Clair river.
Had to have a buddy come & pull us to the Mooretown ramp.
Not a trolling motor. Kicker had a water pump issue so we used the 150 for trolling.
That was a mistake.
Its a etec 1 and it also comes with the extended warranty. Dealers giving me a good deal on it as he wants to make room in his inventory for the G2. Its the last on he has in stock, lots of mixed reviews on these. Some say they are amazing others sat they are problematic. Are the optimax mercs discontinued now? I would probably consider a good used one if I can find one. Any good websits selling used outboards? decisions, decisions. I'm going to be upgrading from a merc efi that was bullet proof.Quote:

I think I jinxed myself in my pervious post. Took to DR on Friday fired right up, idle out to river doesn't sound good. Giver the gas to get going, won't go over 5mph and sounds bad. Got kicker working and used that for 2 hours while we got our 4 man limit. Took to shop, first thing they asked if I use it for trolling. Never have. Supposed to tell me today what's wrong.
Ignition coil went, so could have been a lot worse. Seems like any motor I own has the same problem. Had a 60 merc that went just before I got the 90, but it caused an engine fire.
That's not to bad, these etecs with the 10 year warranty are tempting. Now that you have had yours a few years, would you buy it again?Quote:

The 10 year warranty ended yesterday I was told. Deal tried to talk me into another motor to get it. I know them well was just playing around. This is the first issue I have had in the almost 7 years I have owned it. 90 seconds to winterize and starts up with no choke or priming every time, even with the ignition coil bad. I'm so confident with this motor that its first start of every year but one was an hour drive away in the DR with 3 guys coming along. the other year was a warm spell in mid-march uncovered it and started again in the marina as we were going fishing. Fished twice winterized again before pulling out of water, covered it up again and waited for spring. So yes I would recommend the etec. From what I have heard here and from the dealer you don't want to troll with them. But I think a 90hp is too big anyway. I have fouled up my 60hp four stroke merc trying to use it to troll when electric died. I have a 8hp merc kicker and a 80lb electric so I should never have to use the big motor for trolling.
Sounds good thanks.
Well I ended up buying the 150 e-tec, so far really impressed. It’s starts with a bump of the key and runs very smoothly. No smoke or gas smells at all. Lots of low end hole shot power.
Doesn't this make sense though? 5L divided by 10 days equals 500mL per day. At 50:1, this means you burned 25L of gas per day. It is pretty hard for me to spend a day on the water without burning 25L of gas. At 100:1 that's 50L of gas in a day which doesn't seem unreasonable either.
