I can understand why the parents are doing this, and I don't know what I would do in their place.
That is such a tragic story for Alfie and his family.
If you'd like to read the very thorough, and heart-wrenching, decision by the judiciary in February to support removal of life-support, then it is here.:
https://www.judiciary.gov.uk/wp-cont...ey-v-evans.pdf
I hope everyone involves eventually finds peace in this, but it does not look like there is any chance Alfie could improve from his current state of untreatable seizures, essentially no motor function and no meaningful response to stimuli. He can't eat or swallow, and can't breath on his own.
I wish I had not read that, actually.
He can breath on his own now and also swallow - that is what makes this situation so sad - this is what happens when the government gets involved
Socialised medicine allowed this child to be kept alive for almost two years, at no cost to the parents, giving more than enough time to have and explore hope of curing the child. Can you tell me how this would have played out in America, JoePa?
Ah, yes, I forgot to look at the current articles. Almost two days and still breathing, that is a good sign I guess, or possibly false-hope. Either way, I don't fault the parents for attempting to explore all avenues.
The dad says eating in one article but I don't know whether that means through the naso-jejunal tube or swallowing liquids. Obviously there are patient privacy concerns, so it's hard to find out from the medical side.
As for the socialized healthcare part:
JoePa, I am unfamiliar with how treatment, referrals and second/third/fourth opinions work in various States. How easy would it have been for this family to access multiple neurological and paediatric expert assessments and second opinion reviews, repeated MRI and EEG scans, plus continued intensive care since December 2016?
Would that have been possible for them in a more privatized setting like the US, without incurring crushing debt? Or would they be relying on Medicare/Medicaid? I don't exactly know how the various insurance policies or HMOs work, so this question is in earnest, and not meant as a 'gotcha'.
While Alfie's case is certainly terrible it is minor compared to the 1000s that die in the US every year because they either can't afford treatment or their insurance company screws them.
There is a reason life expectancy in the US is terrible compared to other developed countries. The 30 countries that beat the US in this category (including Canada and most of Europe) virtually all have public health care. Every system will have some issues (Alfie is an example of this) but on the average developed countries with public health care provide far better care than the average Joe can expect in the states.
We have the best medical facilities in the world that is why so many people from other countries - including Canada - come here when they can't get proper treatment in their own county - if someone is on life support it is up to the family member who has power of attorney to decide if the support should be removed after discussing the situation with the doctors - some judge doesn't get to decide - no one is denied medical help - one can go to any hospital's emergency facility and get help - for free if needed -
How this would have played out in America - the child would be given every chance to live even if his life would be less than normal - if the family had insurance it would cover most things - if not there would be millions of people willing to contribute money for this family's health expenses - I'm am sure you know if there is a disaster anywhere in the world the U.S. is the first to help - we have many faults but one thing we are generous - I have friends in Ontario and I have often talked to them about health care - I can't get over the long time they have to wait to get some tests or procedure done - I can get a MRI scheduled in a couple days and a needed operation in a couple days - personally I have social security that pays around 85 % of my medical expenses and I also have a supplemental plan that pays the rest - I pay something each month for the supplemental plan but most of this is paid by the place where I retired from - life is sacred and everything should be done to save one no matter how much it would cost -
When you have socialized health care the government pays and gets the authority to decide who gets the help and how much - if our life expectancy is below other countries it is not because of the lack of health care - it is probably form eating to much and living the good life - or getting shot -
First off I am generally speaking a capitalist pig, however where health care and education are concerned I make exceptions.
The people who travel to the States for treatment are typically very wealthy and getting treatments that would not even be available to most of your own country men. That's the problem with a system designed to profit from people's fear and suffering. I agree with you that Alfie's case is wrong but for every Alfie there are thousands who die in the States because they get no treatment in the first place - life is only sacred in America if you have money or an insurance company that decides not to screw you - getting denied treatment happens 1000s of times more often than a case like Alfies's in the land of the free - free to die.
So your basically saying it is because of stupidity, ignorance and violence, in actuality it is because in countries like Canada we go to the doctor when we are sick. In the States lots of people don't because they can't pay and as result they stay ignorant to their own circumstances. Than what happens is the Americans keep on doing what they are doing and die young - in Canada the doctor explains the changes you need to make and you get treatment. Some people inevitably ignore the doctor but some don't and the result is more of us live longer. Our public system actually educates people so they are no longer ignorant.
What a wonderful country that must be. Imagine if the social security that you enjoy so much paid 100% instead of 85% for necessary treatments! That would truly be lovely.
Yes and then have to wait months to have tests done or get a operation - and then if you are old and need something done you are delayed further so some young guy can get things done earlier - when you get the government involved it is never better - that includes health care and education - most of the public schools are zoos and students are way behind other countries - public schools don't teach anymore they indoctrinate kids - I know of no one that died because they couldn't get medical attention - I don't know where you got that from - if things were so bad why is it that we have to build a wall to keep people out of here - rumor has it we might build a wall on our northern border some day
I guess then we'd have to say goodbye to you, eh Joe? Haha
I hope your MRI and operation that you've got coming up go well!
That's because you either live in a made up reality or are naive.
6 to 40% of claims (depends on the company) for treatment of chronic illness are denied.
http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blo...enied-coverage
Took 10 seconds to find 100s of articles like that.
JP if you build a northern wall , it will not be to keep others out, but to keep your countrymen in.
Everybody who knows me knows I am for small government. Some things are too important and fundamental to privatize. Health care can be improved, mostly by cutting the layers of ineffective administration that sucks funding from front line care givers. My opinion of these workers is that they are probably the most dedicated and needed civil servants. There is room for private within the system ( which already exists ) but funding should always be covered by government.
Not that different with Hydro. It needs to be government run but the layers of obscene salaries and bonuses by admin needs to be stopped. Doug will start the process.
It is lucky for you that you have benefits paid out after retirement, although you may not believe it that is not the norm. If you were a part time worker you would have no ability to even see the doctor let alone get treatment.
I have a friend who is 21 and was really not feeling well, went to see the doctor and they found cancer, Hodgkin's disease, a University student with no money, trying to build up to a long career, if they were in the US system they would be given 1 of 2 options. Either no treatment and die or get treatment and be a slave for the rest of their lives to pay it off, what a great system they have there.
I am sorry if this sounds cruel or heartless, but there is an uncomfortable truth to this story.
Medical treatments and life saving techniques have be come so much more advanced, that there are/will be hundreds of Alfie cases. In the past many cases like Alfie would not have lived long enough for anyone to have to make a decision to remove life support.
We can keep people alive, but we can't "fix" them, and that creates a social and moral problem. How far will we go to simple keep someone alive just for them to be alive? How many "Christopher Pike"s will there be before we decide/realize we are only making people suffer more.
Yes mrs 'insert your name' we can keep him alive for another 20 to 30 years, he will be safe and taken care of here in the bed for the next two to three decades, and you can visit and sit beside him any time you like. What kind of life will he have? Well not much, but at least he'll be alive.
Hell no. Drag my butt out in the Bush pull the F'ing plug, and leave me to rot under a tree.
No, he applies for Medicaid and gets treated if he meets the criteria. Some states have better coverage and after checking if he will still have coverage and if he can, he moves. I worked for medical companies based in Canada and the US and in some areas the coverage is more comprehensive than our monkey's lunch, worse in other categories but it is there even with Obama's trying to muck it up.
I did a quick look while finishing my coffee and there are some answers and ideas here.
https://www.quora.com/I-have-been-di...are-my-options
Our electric power costs are a lot lower than what you guys pay because private companies compete with each other for customers - we can choose any company to supply our power using the local utility's distribution system - government controlled electric power does not give you the cheapest rates - no competition
Compared to Ontario this is mostly true. Compared to Quebec and Manitoba not even close. Those government run electrical systems are the cheapest in the developed world and power cost about half of what you pay in the States. Alberta, BC and Newfoundland are also cheaper than the States. The rest of Canada has similar rates to the US.
http://www.hydroquebec.com/data/docu...ity-prices.pdf
Try reading it, I said to look into Medicaid and if you can get the treatment in another state then you can move. It may be the only option .... in Canada we see things like that all time where people go to the US for treatment, my neighbour went to India for ALS treatments approved in Europe and most of Asia but not Ontario,
In Calgary
https://globalnews.ca/news/3410342/c...ystem-says-no/
In Ontario
http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-...-international
took me a minute to find this one ... last I heard it was still not approved.
https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/girl-1...osis-1.1711487
63,000 left the country for medical treatments...
https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/63-000...tute-1.3486635
the top three provinces from which patients travelled abroad for treatment are:
Ontario: 26,513 patients
British Columbia: 15,372 patients
Alberta: 9,067 patients
People will go to many lengths and even dangers for their health .... Vicar Andrew White I have heard joke about the only place he could get his medical treatment for MS was in the red zone in Baghdad.... when the doctor friend of his decided to treat him, others also started going there for treatment that was unavailable anywhere else in the world other than for alot of money in China.
Eric Metaxas and Canon White in an interview ... I enjoyed this interview alot but you can listen starting at 30:30. His line was roughly "we can cure you but you might die getting here" , I saw elsewhere that 11 staff had been killed in one year there and at one point they had assigned him "35 armed guards assigned to protect him"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOJlSIaFv1I
P.S.
I was listening and laughing with the above interview and found one on him actually getting treatment.

At some point those companies have to buy it from the suppliers and they have to maintain the lines and equipment, in many areas they may take days or weeks to respond to a power outage due to the impact on the bottom line. In Ontario we have a corrupt ideologues in power that sold off 60% of Hydro One and still think they are in control... they push electric cars, build wind turbines in environmentally sensitive areas killing birds and bats by the thousands and still plan on rate increases...
http://business.financialpost.com/co...m-2017-to-2035
Mosquito, what Joe is talking about with the power is not small company providing power to your house with their own lines. Your thinking it's like cable/satellite TV and home phone/internet line, maybe. No the companies pre-buy huge blocks( hundreds or thousands) of kilowatt hours from the generating companies that own and maintaine the transmission lines and infrastructure.
It's like I start a gas club. I pre-buy like 500 thousand liters of gas from husky or petro canada. I get the gas at a price low enough to resell it to my members so that they pay a few cents below the pump price and I still make a few cents profit on each liter. The more members I have in my gas club, the more gas I can pre-buy and the cheaper the price for the members.
Does that make sense?
No doubt this happens, but conversely 1,400,000 Yanks leave the US every year to seek treatment in foreign countries.
http://www.businessinsider.com/more-...is-year-2016-8
http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/0...ear-Should-You
The primary reason being that they can't afford treatment in their own country. That's what happens when an essential service like healthcare is put into the hands of corporations only interested in the bottom line and keeping the shareholders happy. Like I said earlier I am a capitalist pig but some things are too important to entrust to corporations only interested in lining their pockets. Any model will undoubtably have issues but where health is concerned if greed can be eliminated it can only be a good thing.
Yes, I have actually worked on reseller programs at some companies I have worked for.
Providers, transmission, resellers ... but many to the customer sellers in the US energy market are already public utility companies.
http://competitiveenergy.org/consume...#northcarolina
looking at a map of North Carolina...
https://www.carolinacountry.com/medi...81c4b1f227.jpg
We do see some of the same with resellers like Techsavvy that uses Roger's lines or small telco's using Bell towers etc. As a side note many internet DSL providers (actually resellers) don't tell you that if you port your telephone number over to them you may still have to pay Bell (directly or through them) for the final loop (that final connection to the house). They will still be using Bell's lines to your property and a "dry line" (no phone) is still active with a DSL and is charged for.
Benefit management companies are used by many companies for their prescription and healthcare for their employees and if you look at the example set by the public ones they often seem less altruistic than the private ones given my experience. A company making a profit has a motivation to provide better service, to keep a good reputation and still make money (which is also often the issue too).
However a purely public one like in Ontario we see a 12 year old crying for medication they won't pay for, my neighbour going to India because he can afford it and they won't approve the treatment here (been approved in Europe and US for years) etc. It is a bloody fine line that when someone tells you it must be an absolute on something this complicated I cringe.... I wish Ontario allowed more private corporations and we see it in MRI and some places but when comparing to the US and medicaid it is not as bad as many say .... ALOT of room for improvement to though .... In Canada we see things like the operation above that they had to come up with $600,000 for etc.
It is a mix of goals and we see the doctors that do things like "Operation Smile" and other procedures and I remember my dentist going off to do work overseas for free. We are lucky to have what we do have but Wynne and the Liberal's have done cuts, held back treatments approved all over the world for years and even killed the "annual" physical and every time I go for a bug or prescription there is a new notice about a cut etc. .... but I would sure as heck not to be the one responsible for trying to fix it....
Imagine when Ford gets in trying to straighten out the secret contracts, long term debts etc. He is going to need a sledge hammer, duct tape and bandaids on what he finds like crazy and imagine being the one accountable for fixing what the governor general has been reporting ... then think of all the drug bills, free bees etc. Wynne has thrown around to try and win the election... and all tied to people's health and life .... head spin!
The little boy in the UK died -
Joe if the US wants a wall between US and Canada , I will contribute money to the cause.
Anything to keep you out of the country.
[QUOTE=JUDGE;1059269]Joe if the US wants a wall between US and Canada , I will contribute money to the cause.

There must be something wrong with Joe, he must be a gluten for punishment, he is always denigrating CANADA , but he keeps coming up here to fish,.
He should stay down there in the u.s. where he can carry his sidearm while fishing for catfish .
From what I heard that after we build the southern wall then we are going to build a northern wall to keep people who immigrate to Canada from finally ending up down here - and regular Canadians who want a bigger piece of the pie - from the plans I saw the wall is only about 6 feet high - experts figure that is high enough for that purpose -
And buddy you don't have to worry about me coming to live up there - no way - I like freedom and liberty - don't like the government controlling my life from cradle to grave and beyond - oh - one other point - you don't need to contribute to its construction - Trump says that Canada is going to pay for it
For those who would actually read the articles, here is an opinion piece that says a lot as to how difficult this would be for all those involved and a little perspective on the situation.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/opinion/alfie-evans-1.4638184
Life is not always the best option, even though it is really hard. I do find it really tough to hear from one poster here how special life is and that no matter what this child should have been kept on life support to keep him alive but in many other posts has stated how easily they would end a life of someone else's child for some petty crimes.
Can they start the wall in Quebec .... you know where there used to be a ditch and they built a bridge etc.
http://brianlilley.com/trudeaus-solu...em-to-ontario/
At this point last year government officials say there were about 2,000 people at Roxham Road, now it is more than 6,000. Will we actually crack 60,000 illegal crossings, almost all at one location, almost all coming from organized groups, before Trudeau acts?
I fear the answer is yes.
I mean there is a MLA in Quebec suggesting a fence ... 6,300 illegal crossings so far this year, $160,000,000+ in spending planned.... so many they are sending them to Ontario.

Is a wall needed - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyCZTVapOnM
how about this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLGcI0PtE2k
Seems pathetic that the left insists that you have to agree with their idea that murdering an unborn child is OK, but the killing of a murder, rapist, terrorist is a bad thing. .... maybe part of their mental derangement that the innocent is the problem????
I would say a wall might be a good idea, just to keep out the thousands of illegal immigrants.... under the huge increases the system is past the breaking point.... just look at what condition the refugee program is in.
https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...-refugees.html
As of this month, refugees make up nearly 38 per cent of Toronto’s shelter population on any given night, according to city data. That’s up from 11.2 per cent two years ago. The sharp increase worries city staff, already dealing with a continuing crisis of capacity that has not relented even though temperatures have warmed.
...
The city now counts 6,740 beds in its emergency shelter system, including 2,283 rented in motels.
..
It’s overwhelming, but this is the new reality. The situation in the United States … it’s not a place for migrants anymore,” he said. “People are going to keep coming.”
The fact they are migrants and entering illegally and not real refugees and even the spin by the Star doesn't miss the fact it is really pissing off law abiding immigrants/refugees etc. and anyone that actually has a clue is just way beyond the ideologues on the left it seems!
You always take things to the extreme to prove your so called points. How about this one mosq.. JP thinks it is okay to kill- shoot someone breaking into your car, standing on your porch without permission, do you agree? Those people are not rapists , murderers, terrorists, see the difference?
Wait a minute I never said that it is ok to shoot someone who is on my porch without permission nor did I say that I would shoot someone breaking into my car - in the last situation I would confront the crook while holding him at bay with my gun - if he rushed me than yes I would shoot - it he ran away I would shoot over his head to scare the hell out of him - and yes it seems that some people have a hard time distinguishing between a innocent little baby and a grown up crook -
I read that in Sweden there are no people with Downs Syndrome any more - they are all aborted if tests indicate that the baby might be born with this disorder - we in the west have the nerve to criticize Hitler for what he did yet we do the same thing - mark my word the day will come if the Godless Progressives get their way old people who are a burden on society will go the same route - if someone takes the time to look at the pictures are were taken at abortion clinics where human remains are overflowing a dumpster and still thinks that this is ok - all I can say people are sick
Joe, just ignore FMC an advocate for the liberals and criminals isn't worth the effort and he won't listen anyway.
Their rant, rhetoric and anger at being questioned etc show they truly are messed up morally and they sadly seem to prefer it to integrity and justice.... ignore him.
“A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims... but accomplices” - George Orwell
Yep, that's why Trump refered to draining the swamp, the choice is bad or horrendous... and I think Trump is finding out just how deep the swamp is by now. I almost feel sorry for Ford when he takes over in a couple months, with all the lies, the bribes, the questionable contracts, the hiring, the spending, crooked books etc.
I walked into a local meat market and when I asked how it was going I got an answer all right .... oh boy did I.... about 5 minutes on how the taxes/expenses have gone up, then about 5 on her sister that works in a government office all day, each year she gets a new cell phone and gives the old one to her husband and her sister complains they have hired so many people there is no work for them to do so they just talk and make calls .... did you see that the gov't just bought 31,000 new cell phones.... then she went on about 5 minutes Wynne and really went on about the drop in quality of the schools etc..... thankfully there was no one behind me in line .... ah... tax season.... where the question "how's it going" will get you a 10+ minute rant ..... amazing how many people are really ticked

If i knew where he lived I would send him a Trumpy Bear so he can hang it over his bed
What did you guys think about the differences in prices in Canada vs the U.S - I always knew that they were higher but not that much - kinda strange that an item made in Canada costs more in Canada than in the States - and the difference in car prices is something else - didn't know that dealers in the States can't sell cars to Canadians because manufactures won't let them
Was at some friends place on the weekend ( they winter in Florida ) and said how much the prices have gone up down there and that there are no real bargains to be had, basically paying the same for all their groceries as they pay back in Canada.
Joe when if EVER are you going to ADMIT that TRUMP has been nothing but a DISASTER for the Great US OF A.
You seem to have your head buried in the Sand like a lot of his other Cult followers. He will end up in Jail at some point.
In this case you are dealing with a human life - your not talking about a woman's body anymore - who is looking out for the baby - in this day and age why is a woman getting pregnant if she doesn't want a baby - humans have been given the privilege of creating life and along with it comes a lot of responsibility - you don't end a life just because you feel like it - I never have a problem with the government stepping in to help the helpless
My understanding was that Canadians/Americans can buy vehicles in either country and transfer them to the other. The only power the manufacturers have (and they use it) was that any warranty work must be done by a dealer in the country the car was bought in. GM Canada won't come good for warranty work on a car sold in the US.
It does when the men decide it does, did you see the picture of the Women's health care? Nothing better than a bunch of men to decide the health coverage women should have.
http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/rea...1d405d9d09b8bc
Fox,
I think you misunderstood my post. JoePa couldn't think of any reason to abort a pregnancy. I gave him one. I think what a woman decides to do with her body is her own business. However, on the same page, I don't think abortion should be used as a means of birth control (I know of a few girls in high school who should have paid more attention in health class and shouldn't have relied on their boyfriends so much) but that is my opinion and it is only my opinion.
The problem, as I see it, with the entire pro-life movement is they believe in utero life has a right to be carried to term. There is nothing in nature to guarantee this right. A lot of babies are lost in the first trimester of a woman's pregnancy for a variety of reasons. Humans in our society don't get a lot of their rights by law until they are a bit more established in society (voting at the age of 18). Humans don't have a god given right to exist. To think otherwise is extremely arrogant.
A fact that seems to not have been noticed by both sides of the debate, is that even in a modern clinical setting women do die well having an abortion. Just like women can die from a miscarriage.
Worked with a guy in the Oil patch. Just got into it, wife loved the money, but not the fact he was out of contact some times for a week. Cell coverage was is not good in the Bush up north. As you can guess Divorce came along. Well filing she found out she pregnant. Her mother bullied her( never liked the husband anyways) to an abortion. The husbands family begged her to have it and offered money and visiting rights any thing she wanted. No mom bullied her and she went in at 7 AM on a Tuesday. They started the procedure at 815, by 833 she was legally dead. Massive internal hemorrhage and she bled out is 4 minutes. They were still married as the Divorce was not final, and his family their lawyers went on a campaign of pure revenge. They had tried for six or eight years to have a baby.
It's not just the fetus and the mother's life at risk. It wrecked two families. Can you imagine a mother losing her daughter, and then never being able to attend the funeral or ever visit the grave because of restraining orders.
Mac - I don't know where you are coming from but I will tell you this - so far Trump has been the best president we have had in a very long time - maybe you can enlighten me and tell me what he has done wrong - he is on the road to be elected again I'm sure -
I agree with everything you wrote here, my post to yours was simply to show how screwed up things are when a bunch of rich white men decide the health care rights on women in a "developed" nation.
There are quite a few reasons to keep a baby, quite a few to give a baby up for adoption and quite a few to terminate a pregnancy and I truly believe that if you are not in any of those 3 situations (the father included) then you really have no right to say anything about it. Unless you are the parent debating bringing a baby to term with a high potential for Downs/spina bifida (same test), a parent who has a life threatening condition or the options when getting pregnant way too young you should keep your opinions to yourself.
Both of my grandmothers almost died due to complications during pregnancy, my one grandma was told by a priest that she was a sinner who would go to hell if she listened to the doctor and went on the pill, that priest almost killed her and orphaned 4 kids, if she were on birth control and it did not work and had an abortion I would say it was 100% justified in her case.
