Sleeping at Camp

We have a converted school bus with 6 bunks....and a few snorers. My first year there I got the bunk between two guys (father and son). Sounds like a train running thru , in stereo......LOL

My P/U truck had a cap on it so I picked up the mattress and threw it in the bed and slept out there for the week :)

Anyone else have a story ???

He said “Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him goodnight.

Bob covered himself and watched me all night.”

I have no stories, as I have been told I'm the snorer. But I do like the joke.

Our moose camp has become the CPAP testing facility, 4 guys on the machines and 2 not. All snoring has ceased and I have never slept so well in my life. I go on this trip evey year for 2 reasons, hunting and a week of a good nights sleep.

I had to travel with my elderly parents and shared a hotel room. Let's say I was VERY happy for my ear plugs!

My hunting buddy snores too. But not when we cuddle..nice and quiet then.:thumbup: at least when we are sleeping it's warmer.;)

My hunting buddy is my wife so snuggling is mandatory. :-)

3 out of 5 in our camp are using Cpaps. We call ourselves camp Apnea but no more snoring. We do have one who talks in his sleep, strange bugger.

My one buddy snores so loudly we have him sleep outside in a tent....well away from us. He doesn’t care because he can fall asleep instantly just about anywhere. (We know this first hand because of the noise!).
On one fishing trip he happened to be in a room with another guy and the were both snoring so loud they woke each other up and had a big fight about the noise in the middle of the night.

i too have a converted bus with heavy snoring going on As a remedy between seasons built a solar system with storage batteries to provide power overnight for these lads. now it works like a charm and we have a small computer fan to move the heat around too!

I am the snorer. When on Waterfowl trips I share a room with a buddy with a CPAP machine, I don't bother him, he doesn't bother me. One year he couldn't go, so the Newbie shared the hotel room with me. I am a light sleeper and woke up to the TV blaring, him sleeping and the remote in his hand under the covers. My snoring had been keeping him awake, his Tv noise woke me up so he could sleep... I couldn't, too much noise. Next day we were both exhausted and in y moods, that night he grabbed his mattress and linen, slept on the floor of another room... we were all much happier.

I used to canoe with a BIL that liked to snore especially after enjoying some of the mellowing smoke. Fortunately he was absolutely petrified of bears. All I had to do once he started snoring was jostle him and ask him if he heard that sound???? Then I 'd say I though it was a bear ...... I'd fall asleep and he'd sleep lightly. Until he realized what I was doing! Then he'd wake me up when I started to snore. LOL.

I am among a few guys at each camp who do the cpap thing. We have a lot of laughs about it but I still hear all about how they can hear the air leaks all night-jeez make up your minds. I could never sleep with ear plugs myself, fearful of the sensory deprivation.
Funny camp sleep story. In the center of our bunk room is 2 sets of single bunks pushed together side by each with plywood seperating the first storey. I was sleeping, well semi sleeping and was using my top bunk for my gear. My buds son was on the top bunk of the other side. Im drifting off to sleep and all of a sudden I hear a rustle on my top bunk then WHAM my buddys son drops from the top bunk on my side and belly flops to the floor. He stands up, walks around and climbs back up and goes straight back to zzzz. He managed to roll over my duffle, bike helmet etc and skydive to the plywood and DIDNT REMEMBER IT IN THE A.M. !!!

Snoring can definitely make sleeping at camp a challenge. It sounds like everyone had their own unique way of dealing with it. Myself, I’ve found the "Garbage Deleted" solutions, like a comfortable mattress topper and breathable sheets, can make a big difference in preventing snoring. But nothing beats having a good laugh like you guys did.
Another tip is to bring earplugs, but that can only do so much. Maybe you can bring a white noise machine to help block out any snores or other distracting sounds. And for a more drastic measure, setting up a tent or hammock away from the snorer might be necessary for some much needed Zs.

On a backpacking trip, I shared a tent with my buddy. Unfortunately, my digestive system was over-active that night....

The smell was so bad, that it woke ME up. I can only imagine how nasty it was for him...
Needless to say, he never shared a tent with me again.

Hammock, the answer is a hammock. Rolls up into its own little bag and takes up almost no space. Built in bug net is good for warmer weather and being up off the ground is great for colder weather. Pair it with whatever combo of sleeping pad and bag system you prefer and you are good to go. All you need a is a couple of trees. Hopefully at least a few dozen meters from the people who snore.

Also sleep apnea is really bad for you I would encourage you all to relentlessly mock your friends until they loose weight.

Oh,so,you've seen our camp? We had so many CPAP machines going at once that it sounded like an auto assembly line. I wish I had have thought about the hammock thing,before. We had the perfect outdoor set-up for it,too. :D:D

A 95lb black Lab and a bag of kibble has worked very well for me in the past. As soon as someone disrupts my sleep and starts to rudely snore, rather than let them sleep while I stare at the ceiling all night, I reach down into the kibble bag. I throw a handful of kibble into the darkness, towards the person who’s making all the noise. You then hear the snoring abruptly stop, followed by profanity when the snorer starts yelling at the black "pig dog" who’s on top of him in the bed, rooting around the bedding like a truffle hog. If they start up ten minutes later you just do it again. Absolutely priceless in the morning when you see them at the breakfast table with big black bags under their eyes, complaining “ that big gd black dog was up on my bed all last night”. Never gets old and I’ve yet to own a “Blackie” that doesn’t like to play the game! Only thing better would be to do it with a 95 pound black and tan or blue tick hound with a stinking greasy coat!

I think I've got a couple of those that fit the bill....lmao

That’s hilarious.

I've endured quite a few "rustic" camps in my younger days and then the "over crowded cottage" camp but now have the luxury of living at the hunt camp year round. I retired and now rent the property located on a main road, 3 bedroom(4 beds; queen, double, two singles) full bathroom and kitchen upstairs brick house with a "Man Cave" c/w full kitchen and shower/bathroom in the basement and detached two car garage. Fireplace insert in basement with a regular fireplace in living room upstairs. No snoring to worry about now.

I remember reading a book many years ago about the old days in the logging and construction camps of northern Ontario. I think it was the Abitibi Canyon diversion project for hydro where this story came from. I guess there was a Frenchie who was a bear of a man and he snored like a D10 dozer. He kept the entire camp up, including the cook and cookee who lived in an adjacent cottage. It was sweltering summer heat, and the bunkhouse was so hot the men were all just sleeping in their gitch. I guess the one Ottawa Valley driller boy had had enough of getting no sleep, so he ran two wires of that Nonel detonation cord along the wall and ran them into a plastic bag of acetylene welding gas that was sealed and taped to the back of the Frenchman's metal bed frame. The other end was attached to a detonator by his bed. Apparently he cranked her over and set off one hell of a bang in the bunkhouse that put the Frenchie right out of bed.

Holbrook says that for 19th-century loggers in New England and then the Great Lakes, “The fare was pretty much salt pork, beans, bread and molasses, and tea, black tea strong enough to float an ax on.”

I’ve been using a CPAP for about 12 years but should have gotten it about 20 years ago. Funny though when guys said that I snored, I was in denial. It wasn’t until I started getting really tired in the afternoon (and driving) that I went to a sleep clinic and got a sleep apnea diagnosis. It took me a couple of years to get used to sleeping with a mask over my face… felt like a plunger.

Dentists also offer snore guards. It's molded to your dental imprintsband moves your lower jaw forward a bit, thus opening up the air way during sleep.
It's not as effective as CPAP, but still less hassle and needs no batteries

Snoring is not always a sign of sleep apnea, as apnea will cause you to stop breathing, sometimes for too long (only once though, cause you are dead now). I started waking up in a full body sweat sometimes, and not able to breathe, even when standing up. Hasn't happened since getting the machine. Started with nasal pillows, but after the doc upped my air pressure I started to become a mouth breather in my sleep, so had to go to a mask. I would recommend getting tested to anyone who snores or wakes up covered in sweat, it will prolong your life and save your heart from doing a bunch of extra work it does not have to.
