Greenock Swamp

Hi folks,

I've began my scouting for areas to hunt deer this coming November with a rifle. I looked through WMU 84 and noticed public areas managed by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority, notably Greenock Swamp being the largest. Does anyone have any experiences hunting this area?

There be monsters in there. +/- 20,000 acres (I think only about 12,000 is public/owned by SVCA and therefore hunt-able as public land) of thick wooded swamp. Not really any trail system per say but you can access it from Conc. 6 or Conc. 10 or via Canoe on the Teeswater River off either Conc 2 or County Road 20. If you go the canoe route take a chainsaw, bow-saw, machete and axe as there is often trees down on the river. Rifle wise something fast pointing with open sights is good as you are never gonna have shots past 20 or 30 yards. It's a great late season bow hunt as the deer will yard there in years with enough snow.

It's a big place so a bunch of pre-season scouting is recommended.

That's an extremely good point, don't want to be charged with any violations!

It sounds like a shotgun would be more suitable due to the heavy brush in November! Thanks for the input.

Good point, keeping in mind the whole time that if you're successful in your hunt, you'll have to haul out that 250/lb dead weight 'monster'.....

I live 5 minutes from the swamp, lots of places to hunt, I would suggest a rifle, just pick your spot, myself, I use a scoped 270 with no problem, just head up the 6th or the 10th to the ditch rd and head back, quite a few hunters though.

I've got a 30-06 scoped, but I wont be expecting too many shooting opportunities past 50 yards. I'd imagine there's quite a bit of waterfowl hunters too given the habitat.

I know lots of guys that use a 30-06, not too many waterfall hunters at least that I've seen.

Place gets busy during deer gun season. I have taken a drive thru there during the deer season and the roads looked like parking lots.

Yes, I know of a few groups that hunt off of the 10th Con. but I wouldn't say it looks like a parking lot, I live in Cargill, lived there all my life, literally 5 min away

I'm thinking most groups do deer drives through the brush. I've always hunted alone so I'll try finding a small area away from the crowd

No deer drives up there, bush is to big, you would need 200 guys, most people just find a good looking place and just sit.
