Birds and training for new dog(1yr GSP)

Hey guys ,
just took in a rehomed GSP, he's a year old and was in a family setting . Comes from great pedegree , Dunn Creek Outfitters in Michigan.
Hes not our first GSP and I trained our last to NAVHDA standards and achevied a prize 1 with him as a pup. Never trained a year old dog so I'm starting from the ground up , slapping boards at feeding time , kids cap gun , eventually a 22 then on to the shotgun.
There no rush though. Seems unfazed so far with noise.
Does anyone have a source for birds ? i used to get them from Stouffille Market. I'm anxious to see what this fella can do with the right training .

Ya Stouffville Market was a great source shame it got shut down. A live poultry outlet opened up not too far from the old market unfortunately can't remember the name or address I'll see if I can dig it up. Though when I first was there wasn't too impressed with the quality nor price of what they offered. Hope the heat breaks will make condition/training easier.
Keep and eye on Kijiji or contact Birdseye game farm usually come this time of year they clear out their breeding stock. Got a bunch of scratch and dent hens for $5.00 each last year for my pup.

How about a pic of your new dog. If he’s out of the kennel you say he is shouldn’t be a problem training him to hunt. If you can’t find pigeons get some chuckers, just as good as pigeons but tasty as well. Look up the Silver maple gamebirds. Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

Thanks for the info guys, disappointed to hear about Stouffville Market. Reached out to Birdseye, Bruce if i remember correctly from our last hunts at the property . Still waiting to hear back.
Also reached out to the breeder in Michigan , he's sent along some rock solid advice about training older pups. Worst part about getting the pup ... people hid the fact he needed a surgery to repair a salivary gland issue .$$$ We've stepped up and covered it, but they basically dumped him and ran . Sometimes people make me insane .
Ill snap a few pics of him after the surgery , poor guy has a tennis ball size mass on his throat (all his saliva filled a pocket) before and after pics will be insane .

If you had success with your first dog you can use the same techniques. Even though your dog is a year old it is very important to start with some "puppy development" like you would with a young dog. Let him chase some birds, have some fun and build up his prey drive before you start any formal training around birds.

There is a Huntsmith seminar in Michigan on the 14th of July which is a great place to bring a young dog for a little foundation work and advice from one of the best.

What a lucky dog to have a fresh start like that. :)

Do everything you can to get to that Huntsmith Seminar, as Jakezilla said. You won't regret it ever.

I get my pigeons from the Trails End Market - auction of birds - on Dundas Street East in London.

One option is there’s hundreds of pigeons hanging around a mall at 100 Dundas St E in Toronto.

I was looking for a new truck at a dealer next to the mall and I couldn’t believe how many pigeons were there.

A bag of seed and a fishing net and you’re good to go.

I have purchased birds there as well in the morning, prior to the auction. But found they didn't fly well at all. Likely has something to do with being new training a bird dog. But still something to be careful of. I live very close to the trails end and used go weekly. There's always been birds there.
