My season will start with my annual duck opener in Quebec with the guys I grew up with. Next will be upland every weekend and as many days I can sneak away until first week of rifle deer. Deer camp is holy ground, fabulous. After that it's back to birds until the end of the season. It's been a nice summer but I'm done, bring on the fall.
So, what are your plans?
early goose lying in some wheat stubble somewhere. With the 25 landing on a Tuesday may hit hullet for the opener than its woodcock till their gone in November and after that concentrate on either pheasant or grouse. If the occasion should arise may throw in a duck hunt or 2.
Ducks , bucks and geese with the bow .... moose and deer with the rifle ... back to deer and geese if I've a tag left .

plan on small game, and birds with the young dog, (his second season hunting), I will be carrying my bear tag while hunting moose during the rifle week, then back to small game and birds.

I'm only planning on hunting the first week of shotgun for deer here in 65. If I have free time for a muzzle loader or bow hunt that will be a bonus but I doubt it.
Typical fall for me. Lots of Hullett, first hunt on Pelee, not a ton of archery due to work commitments. December black powder around home. Got a drilling this year and hope to check off some boxes with it. Old dog is slowing down a lot. This may be his last season.... :(

I still take my old guy (13) out, just not for longer than 4 hours at a time.

Seen a beautiful 10 point buck about 1kl from my home here in Mississauga, seen a cottontail rabbit in my backyard this morning in Mississauga, saw a nice coyote last year the next street over from my house in Mississauga.But I will probably travel the 250klms up to my hunt camp in Coe Hill and sit there and wonder why I cant have a
hunt camp in Mississauga.

People were shocked when I told them the dog running across the field, playing with theirs was 11 years old. At 13, my old guy is still more active than my friends 7 year old golden.
Enjoy the time Dilly, there is still a few more years to go.
Should get my sons hockey schedule soon. I can start spitballing some time in the grouse woods then. My daughter is 6 and she's been talking about coming along for a trip. I remember how noisy my son was the first couple of years he came along. The difference is that it was his big rubber boots clunking along the trail. The only time my daughter isn't talking it's because she's eating or sleeping. She also talks about 20 decibels higher then anyone else in the room so it might be a real adventure. May be the safest year ever for the birds.
Summer has flown by & the young dog isn't quite where I want her to be but I will be throwing some entry fees in the fire & running her in a couple of trials.
How much hunting I do depends on the older dog who is slowing down with some signs of arthritis. Likely some short hunts with her up at Hullett & Norfolk Co. Younger dog will have to pick up some of the slack.
Planning also on shooting some ducks. Was hoping to do doves for the first time this year but looks like there won't be enough days in the calendar.
My inexplicable ongoing failure to win the lottery & join the idle rich is throwing a cramp in my hunting plans.

Well my summer fishing plans ..... one evening so far where I had to go up to cottage to meet ppl/repairs and it was calm so even though exhausted I got out the cheap "trunk" flyrod and caught some 6" bass chasing late Mayflies.... so essentially RIP ..... :(
given the summer as a guide ..... chauffeur for kids to school etc, alot of work (more after hours support, code promotions, helping wife's (I guess mine too) friends at the restaurant....) , work around the house/cottage/ sister-in-laws (don't buy tools for my brother-in-law.... there should be laws against some people having tools....) .... so essentially enough things that are completely unpredictable or disruptive or on weekends and outside the 9 to 5 that I have to be available for I MAY ... MAY get an evening when closing the cottage (weather permitting... and it hasn't this year) actually get the canoe out for the first time this year for an hour or two of fishing.... we can dream! :(:(
Reminder .... buy 6/49 (the once a quarter activity after looking at my schedule)... money can't buy happiness but it can be traded for time.
Sorry to hear about your old dog Welsh. I'm in the same boat with my male. TPLO on left side is good but he has s partial tear on his right side now. He's fine with normal life but these dogs can't turn it off in the field so he only gets to hunt very short (30-45 minutes) hunts now. Heart breaking leaving him behind. He was a fabulous hunter.
She's still in good health but suddenly going grey (which started with the pup, go figure) & just slowing down. Glucosamine supplements seem to be helping.
Part of the problem is she suffers from comparison to the young dog, who is a dervish.

I have my male on supplements too and really can't prove if they are definitively the reason but you can't tell he's damaged unless he pushes too much. He's on them every day until the end now.
One of the best pheasant hunts in my memory is taking my cousin's OLD dog out for a short hunt, we went to a place we had seen some going in even to make the walking shorter. The pup tore up the ditch and brush like crazy and the old pro just ambled along, we got to a spot the young bezerker had passed and the old pro just stopped, cocked his head like saying what's that and when he stuck his head in that pile of bush a beautiful ring neck rooster came blasting out... that was the last hunt for him but he came back with an "I'm very happy" look and wagging tail. Seemed sometimes it isn't the length etc. to the dog, it is just the I did it when they get old.Quote:

Second full season for the wife and I. Last year she drew the antlerless tag and every time I was out by myself I had opportunities but she had the tag. The best one was a mature doe who stood with her head down behind a tree 20 yards away. Closest encounter was a young doe 7 yards away.
This year I drew the doe tag so I'm definitely bringing home some meat for the freezer!

So I just play it by ear as the days come then go , but I did get my moose license, group did get a " bull tag " and I did apply for the controlled deer hunt.
Then in Jan. of next year , knee replacement surgery, the other knee .
First season hunting in Ontario, but I hope to get out for goose, duck, turkey and upland. My 10yo son is looking forward to getting out for upland as time goes on.
Enjoy the time with the kids. I did this with my kids and now looking forward with time with my 5 year old grandson . Watching them and listening to them discover the outdoors is more rewarding . A couple of birds would be a bonus for a fun day .Quote:

It is truly rewarding to see a new hunter connect with his/hers (yes 8 women thru camp last year) first game. Some are not sure about the killing part and if they can do it. But, I think what happens is all preparations, and efforts justifies it in the end. I also get them to cook and clean what they have killed to finish the cycle and reward.
Gonna spend some on catching pond food like crafish..which the ponds have plenty of large ones with no real predators. Never really thought much about pond food last year, until one day a couple of 10" catfish popped up dead on the surface.
