Looks like a soft goose opener

With another scorcher today (hopefully the last) hard to get excited for the opener. May curtail my activities till Friday with the hope of some cooler weather.
Got a cut wheat field overlooking a golf course so if they fly at the very least should get an idea which way they are going. Early season will be tight as most of my regular fields is corn and soy with only one wheat.
In any case a bad day outdoors is always better than a good day at work.
Trailer loaded and ready to roll hopefully with this front expected to roll through and a change of air will get these summer doldrums out and refresh the enthusiasm.

It's supposed to cool off a bit overnight and into the weekend. Not a lot of geese flying around here but there are some. I'm hoping after everyone has shot at them tomorrow morning, they will be looking for a safe place to roost.

Yup, have to agree. All my fields are still up and not many birds around ... may have to wait a bit for the birds to show up and some fields to be cut before we get after them. Good luck to anyone heading out tomorrow.

I'll let you all know how tomorrow goes. Outvwith my bro in law for his second ever water fowl hunt.

Will also be nice to see how my dog does after an extra year of training.

Brother in law starting at the corn tomorrow so should have a spot to go shortly.

Around here , most farmers have already plowed under their small grain stubble, wheat ,oats,barley, it will be a while till they start chopping corn for silage which the geese do not land in very often.
They star coming in when the farmers are cobbing the corn , but that will be weeks down the road till the cobbs are mature and dry enough.
I find that the early season geese have little to no taste in their flesh as all they have been eating up to now is green grass, they taste much better after eating corn and build up some fat in their flesh.

I agree but its a season of convenience as upland not open yet (well at least where I hunt) the tenders chicken fried and the breast slice thin on the bias makes for a good stir fry. The nov control hunt is the week I get out for the fattened birds as those mixed with early season thigh and drums make for a good pot roast.

we had a late melt and thaw that led to planting around may 24 and later. i feel a bit like the corn will come off around the same time but a bit later. beans are looking pretty good and alot of hay is now baled. geese are still hung up on the big water around us. good luck fin!

Thanks, it was near London. 40-50 dekes. These were a couple flocks of 20+ each. They gave us a few chances and with 5 shooters we carved 6 or 8 out each time.

Looks like you guys did well congrats

Likely be able to get out Saturday. Likely hit some pasture or possible silage depending if it’s off or not. We might have corn off at the end of month when duck opens as well. Can only hope!

Went out last night on water, as I was working in the morning. It was a beautiful night, heard shots, nothing flying. But got some great shots of the sunset reflecting on the water with the decoys from the blind. If I knew how to upload pictures NOT using imgur, I would.

Got skunked (no birds in the bag) at Luther today. Saw lots of ducks. Some geese. Had maybe 5 instances all day of geese circling our decoys but nowhere close enough to take a shot.

Back at it tomorrow for the morning.

Looks like there's a bit of colder weather, and tropical storm Gordon might move the geese around too

Geese have been playing dirty, lots of field switching.......only a matter of time before we get on them good. Still some birds down and just nice to get some birds in Blues mouth again!

I was out bombing around in the boat on Lake Scugog last Friday checking out the spots I like to set up the boat blind and there's nothing flying,yet. I ran into a couple of guys doing the early field Goose hunt. So far,they haven't fired a shot. It's ridiculously hot. I'm not looking for an early start to the season this year. I think it's going to be really late down here.

By the calendar its early and suspect the warm weather hasn't helped. Watched a flock of about 30 birds get up fly around the golf course and set back down for the rest of the morning Friday. Mosquitoes thick in the field thermocall was needed. Don't think they'll be in the mood next week either.

I went out on the water last night, I didn't set out any decoys as it was more of just a scouting mission. There were a few flocks moving around and I heard a few shots. I only had one opportunity in about 2 hours but passed on them because they were behind me and I wasn't sure I could retrieve them if I dropped one.

Certainly plenty of ducks around though!

Hunted with a buddy up north, we got 34 for 4 days of hunting. Lots of misses, why to many. I would like to think we should have had our limit. Lots of ducks flying as well landing in the dekes.

I was out again on Saturday for the morning hunt with my bro in law. He finally saw some action. Few shots at a flock passing above but no luck. He's hooked now, regardless.

Otherwise TONS of ducks. Oh my. Not many geese.

My dog has been doing fantastic too. Boy did he sleep soundly after 2 straight days in the marsh.
