Yesterdays Sun, page 9 re. " Carding "

Very interesting article in which the Chief of Police [ Toronto ]and the writer agree " Top Cop and I agree on carding ".

It speaks of weak kneed politicians caving in and not backing the police.

"And the campaign to eliminate carding as a policing tool has meant more murder. At 80 homicides just nine off the record of 89 in 1991,officers need to be allowed to talk with people collect information gather intelligence and share it . It's policing. "

" The chief knows the gangsters are laughing while carrying whenever the hell they want , wherever the hell they want. When tempers flair, out come the handguns which is why the shooting and homicide numbers have jumped with too many innocent slain".

" Punks with their guns on the streets know they have the edge. Saunders made it clear . Not any more ."

Hopefully the politicians and judges will allow the police to do their jobs , and slowly this stupidity will come to and end.
Is this really too much to hope for?

It won't take long for the racism BS to get under way again and Mayor J Tory will once again bow down to the political pressure and more lives will be lost to these senseless killings... Starting to look a bit like Chicago isn't it...

I don't know if any of you watch "Live P.D." Those American Officers check you out ( search) for almost anything. I'd hate to see it come to that here but agree that the Police need to be able to do their job.

I’m addicted to that show

But the few times they stop a car with a clean driver doesn’t make for good tv to show those stops it’s like 15 minute stop on your way if I have a tail light out or headlamp I appreciate heads up send me on my way

If your riding dirty ( guns drugs drunk or warrants). It’s a good stop and it’s off the streets even if it’s not for long

If your a hunter fisherman are we not carded by the MNR

You have brought up a good point there, I haven't , but how many times are other's stopped by the MNRF during the seasons , be they hunting or fishing?

Interesting concept? And you can be sure, the CO's are just "fishing" for a violation of some kind. I've no problem with that and have no problem with a police officer randomly stopping a person on the street to talk to them.
We expect them to catch the bad guy's, it's what we have police for. Let them do their job and be proactive, instead of reactive.

I'm "carded" almost every evening I hunt, York Regional Police sit at the boat launch and make a point of it.

Not so far this year, but I can tell you I appreciate it. Although I always have everything by the book, not everyone does.

Sharon, I travel to the states, and not the tourist places. Sure white guy in a black community gets the once over by the cops. Longest "stop", less then two mintues walking the streets of Atlanta, Ga. Easiest way to get a feel for people is to talk to them.

Guy smells of dope, got none on him. Cops let him slide one on right. But they remember him.
Well they see him around, learn his movements, he leads them to the runners. Runners lead them to the next guy up the ladder, and so on.

Ya maybe it's an over simplified example, but it's the example in the textbook.

White dude in black neighborhood, gets carded. Black dude in white neighborhood gets carded. Guy wearing nice three piece suit in walmart. Guy wearing Camo in tiffany's. Is it profiling or just noticing something out of place?

Carding means to talk to and check ID's.

If you are working the street in a 90% black neighborhood, your going to be talking to a lot of black people.

If you are working the street in a 90% Hispanic neighborhood, your going to be talking to a lot of Hispanics.

One leads to another ie: profiling to ask questions leads to carding with that info recorded. It used to be a police officer could strike up a conversation with certain individuals and it was seen as good police work. Unfortunately,in this liberal politically correct society,that's not allowed.

Just have a tail light or license plate marker out on a car or trailer at night or drift over the white line a couple of times. Guaranteed you'll get stopped. Courts in Canada have ruled that police can't arbitrarily stop a vehicle,so,any reason to stop must be legit. Our rules also dictate that we must identify ourselves to a police officer when requested to do so with name,date of birth and address,but,that's it. He/she may ask any questions they want,but,we have the right not to answer if we wish.

As the article said, the officers will be assigned to a area for 4 years, I wonder how long this will last before some start hollering that they are being harassed by the constant presence of police officers walking the beat in their area ?
