My First Rifle Deer
Attachment 37594Attachment 37595
After hunting a new area for 3 years my efforts finally paid off on Monday afternoon. I walked into my stand as quietly as I could but I still bumped a large deer bedded right below my stand. I could hear the usual hissing and blowing even after I'd settled in the stand. Assuming it was a doe I just sat quietly for an hour. I could hear the deer moving out about 100 yards every now and then. At 5;00 I figured well I need to try something different so I gave two soft doe grunts. This lad showed up 10 minutes later at about 70 yards across the clearing. I shot lower than I'd hoped but right through the heart. Second picture is the moment I found him.
I've never shot a deer with a rifle before and in this case it was my long since departed father's rifle. A 300 savage that I added a scope to for these old eyes. One more thing off my bucket list. I usually hunt bow and slug seasons.
Special thanks to Species for his encouragement over the last 2 years!

Congrats and excellent story. It's always a nice feeling being able to use an inherited gun. I have shot 3 deer with my dads old shotgun

Awesome work. If that came out of that swamp it is double awesome as that place is a tough nut to crack.
-
Well done , Congrats!
That's a great buck, nice color on the antlers.

That a great buck to get the monkey off your back with Dan.
Congrats on a nice deer !!

Awesome looking buck and cool story. Congrats sir

Thanks guys. Yes it has a tan colour rack. Eight points but not a large body deer for the rack. Definitely a swamp buck, Species! Fairly easy to find but a bugger to get out of the swamp.
-
Congratulations! Nice buck and a classic lever to do the work.

Nice deer and glad your dad's rifle helped you out... Good memories there

Way to go DanO, hopefully this dano can tag one like that!

Nothing like getting something with a family gun, now you know why they used it to make the 7.62 NATO :D
Nice buck and a better story.

Congratulations nice buck.....I going to Pennsylvania in a couple of weeks and will be taking my father's Savage 99 (300 Savage). I hope to get a deer with his 70 year old rifle. It is a great shooter (1 inch groups at 100 yards).

Good luck. This gun (same vintage as your's ) would likely have that kind of accuracy but I sure don't. LOL.
