Do you support a cormorant hunt?

An Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR) Registry Proposal Notice (number 013-4124) that began Nov. 19 and ends Jan. 3 asks for public input regarding a proposed hunting season for double-crested cormorants starting in 2019.
Ontario Out of Doors would like to hear from you as well. Join this online forum thread to have your say. Or email your letter to the editor at [email protected]. We want to know if you have seen cormorants or colonies in your area (include the general area: lake, river, or closest town) and whether or not you would support or partake in the hunt.

Yes I support a Cormorant hunt. My only concern is "antis" seeing dead ones washed up on shores. Cormorant corpse drop off depots (incinerators) would be handy..................................Daniel

I've been seeing cormorants regularly on Georgian Bay, north of Parry Sound, (singles and pairs) but haven't found a nearby colony yet .
Where are you guys seeing them? I'm putting together a map to track sightings/colonies so post locations please.

the OOD newsletter I read this morning spoke about it. You still have to get rid of the carcasses. You can't leave them to wash up on shore.

I'm 100% for this. My Bay of Quinte fishing trips just got a little bit more interesting. Snake Island here I come!

I'm seeing them in the interior lakes of Algonquin Park and I know they were there in the 1970s. Obviously there are sufficient numbers to support a hunt so why should they be an different than the other game species. The concept of a cull rials the environmental crowd but a hunt seems to be somewhat acceptable. So let's HUNT them!

Definitely support it. Growing up along the St. Lawrence river at Cardinal On. I had never seen one. By the time I retired the population was ridiculous & destructive.

Just devastated Hamilton Harbour and Burlington Bay.

Not sure how you could possibly call it a "hunt". I can't see someone bringing home the birds to breast and eat them. The potential bad optics for the hunters involved has me concerned. Imagine the Toronto cottage crowd, with their kids, seeing the local "redneck hunters" blasting a colony out in front of their cottage during a summer vacation. Again the bad optics of killing something and not using it. I wish the CWS would grow some testicles and address the real problem - non-native Mute Swans that have completely devastated our provincial marshes. At least the D.C. Cormorants are native!

you can hunt without eating. Crow hunters do it all the time.
There will be push back from some no matter what they call it.
Agree on the Mute Swans, but they are a pretty bird, so much more public attention if they ever propose a hunt or cull, whatever you wish to call it.

Lots of them on Eugenia lake in grey county, I expect on other lakes in the area, as well. Long past time to control them. old243

i find them on basically any small isolated island in a lake. Easy give-away is dead trees that look like they belong in a swamp. . if this bill goes through, i know of a few spots i'll be heading first.

I all for it, but am curious why the MNRF have suddenly decided they can be hunted and no longer need to be protected. There has been lobbying for a season on them for a while now, without success. Suddenly the MNRF opens the flood gates. Something must have gotten their attention.

I don't know if I support it as it doesn't affect me and I see no reason to kill a animal if I am not going to consume it.

I think maybe if the government was to ask for my vote I would say no.

Other than snakes, I have a hard time killing anything that can't be used but these critters have to be contolled. Same as whacking seagulls at an airport.

Well like I said earlier in the thread you could burn them. At least they would be safer for you to stack then firewood.

These things are like mould, once they get a start they slowly spread. Sooner or later if left alone you will feel the effect.

Holy mackerel........Are you not the guy who always says, ' we should stick together', against anything from the anti's. I see now, how you act when it does not affect you. LOL

Back when you could shoot lead I would always have a load of 7 1/2 or two for the flocks of starlings ..... getting a few cheap lead free shots in 6 for cormorants .... yep! Don't see starlings where I have hunted lately (last year, no time this year... once last year... my wife, boss and a schedule book....) so I don't have any cheap loads for them anymore.

At the cottage with a bow .... yes. You sit having a coffee and watch one eat small bass one after the other (no perch ...) ... YES!!! May not hit them but a wood arrow with a shock head or cheap broad head, then figure out the distances and a morning coffee.... sounds good to me.

I have seen how they denuded areas where they gather caused by their excrement. Then there is the bait fish consumption question ? Do they eat invasive species like Gobies ? Just by the size of them it be safe to say they have to eat a lot. I hunt and fish the Long Point area so I would cast my vote as a "For" in having a "cull" or "hunt". I believe calling it a "cull" would mean a one time thing as opposed to "hunt" that would have it as a yearly season. Either way we should do our part north of the border and not let the Yanks do all the work.

Its semantics, but I'm not comfortable with it characterized as a hunt. I would have preferred instead that the killing of cormorants be de-criminalized, like mice.

I support Hunts and culls 100%. I have seen the damage these birds can do on both shores of the Bruce Peninsula, areas around Manitoulin Island and on Lake Nosbonsing. These birds are of no value to our ecosystem.

I support a cull on these birds

MNR will have their hands full with calls from rec boaters while we're blasting away at these things in the summer. Based on my fishing experience, they're active all times of the day. Will be interesting how they handle that factor.

They should be declared varmints and shot on sight along with biological methods like nest destruction and egg oiling. It would likely help to determine what their natural predators are. Also,we need to tell the bunny huggers to pound salt.

Indigenous ?? To where ??

I had not seen a cormorant in the French River system previous to approx 15 years ago.
The cormorant is a species of sea birds who frequent lakes and rivers in the coastal region. As of recently they have been moving inland and targeting shallower lakes in Central Ontario and causing a number of issues.

So are they " indigenous" ? Not in those areas.

only thing I know of that will eat them are sharks, and Alligators. Not sure you want to stock those in Lake Ontario, though it would make for some interesting summer fun...

I fully support the Cormorant hunt.
I live at Millhaven, where the Millhaven Creek empties into Lake Ontario. I moved here in 2000 and at that time there were hardly any Cormorants. I used to watch the young trout make the creek look like it was boiling as they made their way to the lake. Now there are none. The salmon come up the creek in the fall to spawn. I'd sit on the cliff and watch hundreds of salmon fighting for a spot to make a nest. Now, there are maybe a few dozen during the whole spawn. Thanks to those black devils.
They are eating machines, and besides that, their feces is toxic. I'd see one swimming under water and leave this huge white cloud that sank to the bottom, killing any vegetation it landed on.
I bought the Jan.-Feb. edition of Ontario Out of Doors and was glad to see the MNRF proposed a Cormorant season. I think we may have one of the largest colonies in Ontario. At Amherstview, they have completely decimated two islands. So fifty birds a day seems fair.
I'd like to say It's about time the government got off their butts. These birds alone can ruin a fishery.
I'd like to see a stiffer penalty to anyone bringing non-indigenous birds, animals and fish to our country. Cormorants are Chinese, not Canadian! They don't belong here!

I saw my first cormorant on Rondeau bay about 50 yrs ago, while duck hunting. I thought it was a goose at a distance until it landed in a tree.....their populations have exploded since !! Time to heat up the shotgun barrel !!

Yes, I would totally support a Cormorant hunt. My first experience with this bird was on Rice Lake. There are hundreds of them and they have affected fish population, particularly perch and crappie. I have a cottage just north of Carnarvon and we have had a healthy population of large and smallmouth in the small lakes in the area. Four years ago I noticed one or two cormorants on some of the lakes there are now up to a dozen on the larger lakes. Last summer was the first season where I noticed a decline in fishing success. Most of the local fisherman expressed the same opinion. Since catch and release is the basic philosophy on these lakes, I think the cormorants are a primary cause of the decline. I would welcome a hunting season on this species.
