Hard to believe but today my buddy Jake aka black dog turns 6 years old. Hopefully we've got a lot more seasons of chasing birds ahead of us, he's certainly not slowing down any. It's been quite a ride so far. Not sure why the one picture is rotated...

Time sure flies when having fun. No thoughts of slowing down he should be at the peak of his game. Soon should thinking of bring up a junior

LOL Jake has a LOT of slowing down to do before we add a third dog to the household. I do have the itch pretty bad though. Been looking at setters and DDs. I love the classic look of a setter but just wonder if I'd be better served by a DD since I do a fair amount of waterfowl as well.

Setters & waterfowl are two things that are rarely mentioned together. Gotta say, Setters are great “indoor” dogs. Mine definitely has an off switch, in fact by 9:00 pm if nobody is in bed she just goes by herself.Quote:

In all reality no one can tell you what dog you should get. Got to hunt with different breeds to find what appeals to you, what limitations you can live with.
Guess the best option is to find a hunting partner with the mirror image dog to what you have/will get. That way you'll have the best of both worlds.

Happy birthday to your buddy! Jada will be eight in a couple weeks - still a shock, especially when I had someone ask me today 'how old is your pup?'.
I have a big red machine that is a lovely upland dog, but everyone will like what they like. I wish you many more years with your buddy and hope the next dog fits right in.
Nothing like watching a good pointer work....even though I have two labs
lots of years ahead yet. I was at a youth hunt few years ago, a guy I was with had a springer. It was really good at bring back the ducks. So I think any dog if the size is right can be trained to hunt whatever. I have had mutts that were really good at ducks, pheasants and rabbits. My lab now is good on ducks, pheasants, rabbits and apparently deer as at 11yr he took off after a deer on Saturday. 7 hours later we finally found him. So won't trust him anymore around deer bushes, if he recovers from this round of fun. So at 7 your dog got lots of life yet.
That's pretty much the only reason I still put the e-collar on my lab when we're upland hunting. That and the fact that he thinks the collar is an essential piece of his hunting equipment and he gets excited when he sees it.Quote:
