My gf's daughter spent the weekend taking the hunter safety and firearms course. She passed with all marks in the 90's and top of the class. She's 12 and most of the class was adults (hehe). Im so proud of her. My question for you folks is about the licence. Her instructor says a lot changed Jan1. Does she need to apply to CFO for a possession lic? Or simply carry a certificate which would accompany my PAL?

She cannot get a Minor's permit until she turns 15.
I've included the excerpt from the hunting regs below re apprentices:
Class A1 Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card
The A1 Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the Act and regulations. Applicants for this version of the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card must be 12 years of age or older and will have to provide documentation that they have passed both the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam. These courses are available in a “One-Stop” combined course; however, both courses are available independently if desired. “One-Stop” graduates will meet provincial training requirements to hunt with a gun or bow hunting equipment and the federal training requirements for firearms possession, acquisition and ownership. (NOTE: To own or acquire a gun, you must be 18 years of age or older.)
Class A2 Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card
The A2 Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the Act and regulations except guns. Applicants for this version of the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card must be 12 years of age or older and provide documentation that they have passed the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam.
Other Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program Requirements:
Written parental consent is required before a hunting Outdoors Card or Apprentice Safety Card can be issued if the applicant is less than 16 years of age. Consent is required from both parents if the applicant resides with both parents or from one parent or guardian if not living with both parents.
•
The applicant must be a resident of Ontario.
•
The apprentice, while hunting, must be under the direct and immediate supervision of a mentor who is 18 years of age or
older, and who holds a valid Outdoors Card of the equivalent class and a valid hunting licence for the game species being hunted.
•
The apprentice must share a single firearm with the mentor.
•
An apprentice must possess a federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit to hunt migratory game birds.
•
With the exception of migratory game birds, game wildlife taken by the apprentice must be added to the daily bag limit of the mentor.
•
A Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card is valid for three years.
•
Apprentices must carry the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card with them while hunting.

This is not correct, she cannot have her own firearm for the purpose of general hunting until the age of 15 but she can have her Minors Permit at the age of 12 and in some cases even younger than 12.Quote:

12-14 is the apprenticeship, 15 she can get her own full license and also get a Minor's permit which will allow her to borrow a firearm for the purpose of hunting and have her own bag limit and allow her to apply for big game draws, she could hunt with a bow without this permit though, at 15 she needs consent from her parents to be able to get a hunting license. Again some more clarification it is my understanding as of January 1, 2019 she can now purchase her own game tags and therefore have her own bag limit but is not allowed to apply for big game draws until she is 15. the sharing of the firearm still stands.
I think this works out to give the government more money, do they have to buy their own license? If so then she would have to buy her own small game license, etc, I doubt you will ever go out and shoot 6 and she shoot 6 cottontails.Quote:

PAL Minors permit is age 12 - 15. I applied for my sons and of course filled out the visa number without my glasses on.
Minors Permit is 12-17, you have to be 18 to have your PAL.Quote:

As Rick said, this is not accurate, you can actually hunt in Ontario with a full license in some situations before the age of 15, actually before the age of 12 as the case may be.Quote:

Apprentice Hunters
If a hunter is between the ages of 12 14, they will be considered an apprentice hunter effective
January 1, 2019.
Apprentice hunters will need to buy an Outdoors Card to participate in the Hunter Apprenticeship
Safety Program. The Outdoors Card will replace the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card.
Apprentice hunters who do not wish to purchase their own licences who currently have a valid
hunter apprenticeship safety card can continue to use this card until its expiry date or until the
age of 15.
Apprentice hunters will have the option to buy select hunting licences and tags that are not obtained
through a draw, providing them with their own bag limit.
Hunters 15 years of age and older must purchase an Outdoors Card and their own licences/tags
in order to hunt.
Minor's Licence
A minor's licence permits the borrowing of non-restricted firearms for:
- target practice;
- organized shooting competitions;
- hunting; and,
- instruction in the use of firearms.
- A minor's licence also permits the acquisition of ammunition, unless there is an age restriction under provincial or territorial law.
As a general rule, the following requirements must be met:
- The applicant must be at least 12 years old. If they are younger than 12, they may obtain a minor's licence only if they are Canadian residents and their Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) determines they need to hunt or trap to sustain themselves or their family.
- As per section 7 of the Firearms Act, individuals under 18 must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and pass the tests in order to get a licence.
- Individuals younger than 18 years of age are not eligible to hold a licence authorizing them to possess prohibited or restricted firearms.
Prior to a minor's licence being issued, a Firearms Officer may interview the applicant, their parent or guardian. They must first agree and consent to the conditions under which the minor may use firearms.
Conditions may be placed on the licence by the CFO. For example, supervision may be required when the minor uses a firearm.
The minor's licence will expire on the holder's 18th birthday or the expiry date shown on their licence, whichever comes first.
My son received his Minors permit yesterday, submitted application about 5 weeks ago, we waited till he was 16 because he still had to hunt with a mentor anyways until then so we didn't see the point. We went by the general rules as he doesn't need to hunt to support the family. Just keep in mind hunting and gun laws don't always coincide. His next hurdle will be his PAL that he can't apply for until he is 18 but the Minors Permit expires the day he turns 18 need to find out how that situation works.
Your son need only apply for his PAL once he’s 18. Since he has a minor’s permit, he doesn’t have to pass the firearms safety exams again.Quote:

I realize all he needs to do is apply for his PAL when he turns 18 but if he can't apply until he turns 18 and his Minors permit expires the day he turns 18 there will be a period of time perhaps a month or 2 where he will not have a permit to possess a firearm that is the time frame I am concerned about.
