Which one? Should keep in touch as ya us woodcock hunters are a dwindling breed.
Think it was on chex caught only the tail end. Going to try and find a replay usually episode will replay this week or next sunday on other outdoors channels.
On a side note you seeing any woodcock yet?
Haven't even been out yet. Really wet around my area. Maybe this pm or tomorrow.

Good episode, Sat. 7:30am CityTV chan 28 Rogers. or YouTube Chan.

Cool video, thanks for sharing! Will definitely try to get the dog out soon ... count down to the opener begins!

So anyone else think 3" #5 extended range a bit much for woodcock?
May not have been what they were using but definitely what they were selling. Guess browning don't come in 71/2. Keeping an eye on the fall sales got to get me a case of 7 1/2 this year. Something in a 2 3/4 trap load. more than enough for them.
fwiw My brother in law gave me a box of 20 gauge browning 7.5's for Christmas.
I guess with all the leaves on the trees a heavy shot may help
I've never shot #5's except through a turkey choke, but you'd figure through just about any wing-shooting choke there'd be lots of woodcock sized holes no?
I think I will stick to my 28ga with 3/4 oz of 7.5, plenty for woodcock.Quote:

Although I don't make it a habit with a good dog some days I can make the .410 work.

Woodcock don't need much to knock 'em down......finding them after is the real challenge.
Hi there FFF that's a nice looking dog in the pic, English pointer? Also love the mix bag with the rabbit.
1/2 right. She was an English pointer/English setter cross. Turn out to be a woodcock terror. Rock solid too the point that anything bigger than the .410 was overkill. Normally don't shoot rabbits when woodcock hunting but she pointed everything and was so dead steady that shooting the pointed rabbit was of no concern.
Lost her too early at 10 she developed breast cancer.
One pellet will knock down a woodcock. They're pretty fragile birds. Indeed the one piece of advice I'd give to the woodcock newbie would be to follow up your shots even if unsure, because if you hit that bird, it's down.
I use 3/4 oz. 7.5. But I have shot lots of woodcock with #6 when I run into them pheasant hunting. The main worry isn't the size of the hole but the number of holes in that little piece of meat!

Grouse, WC, phez, bunnies... don't have a need for anything more than 2 3/4" out of a 20 ga.
Not that I don't believe you but they are not here until the dogs say so. Had Nova out for a run today marked the first bird. Missed a nice shot of him belly crawling to a point but a least marked where it was.

Lone bird but expect more as they pass through during the next week or so.
Went for a walk this am. Put up 3. Only one solid point. Others she got too close. Wish I would've backed up a bit and got her full body. I would've walked right by this one within 5 feet if she didn't go on point. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d7d5a711d3.jpg

Saw the episode yesterday. The host said he was using 3 inch 20 gauge shells with 1.25oz #5's. No mention of choke other than the gun had interchangeable chokes. Different strokes, for different folks.
I just re-watched that episode. Its got to be my favourite one yet. My dogs liked it too; they got excited when they heard the bells :)
Great WC hunting footage (not something you see everyday). Three generations of hunters and you could almost smell the cooking at that gathering. I want to be at that table! I've still a got a few WC in my freezer; got to look up some pâté recipes.
The comments about habitat were bang on. In southern Ontario we have fields, mature woodlots and hard edges. What we severely lack is young emergent forest. Where some see "scrub" or "slash", those in the know see habitat, habitat, habitat.
Reminder: woodcock habitat does not require simply young forest.
For reproduction, we need young forest adjacent to suitable singing fields, and we need lots of singing fields, because male woodcock are territorial.
Both of these things are in critically low supply throughout much of southern Ontario.

Good point Welsh!
Bird Studies Canada actually seeks volunteers to conduct woodcock singing ground surveys in the spring: https://oodmag.com/hunting/upland/su...nging-grounds/
I had contact them about participating, but there were no routes available in my area. I would encourage anyone to look into it; its not a lot of work but it helps assess WC populations.
The episode was well done. I happen to be friends with guys in that hunt. Those guys are hardcore bird hunters. I am also honored to have been part of that dinner that was mentioned in episode. Mike Miller was at the dinner and was a class act! Gave me a lot of great tips to finding a guide for a bear hunt. My friend hosts that dinner every year, and it brings together both hunters and non hunters, young and old. A great time each year!
