Staining my stock

Finally got around to putting a stain on the stock of my .54 cal. Lancaster flintlock. I used a traditional method with Aqua Fortis (nitric acid) wiped on and then "blushed" to a dark color with a heat gun. Traditional method would have used a red hot iron bar to pass over the stock to activate the stain. Here are before and after pics. The "after pics" have water on the stock to give an idea of what the final product will be like after a finish is applied. I plan to use multiple coats of Tung Oil as a finish. Thanks Tom and I will post more when finished. It may be a while cuz I still have to do some work on my barrel. Cut a dove tail for the rear sight and brown the barrel......................Daniel

That's first time I've seen Curly Maple with almost a blonde (oak) look. The finished ones I usually see are a lot darker. I like that look.

I saw some Polymerized Tung Oil at Lee Valley a while back and I think I will use that the next time I refinish a stock. Like you I don't baby my guns so by their description, the polymerized finish may hold up a little better.

Nice to see a stock where the patterning of the grain is not hidden under a million layers of crud. Even pine can have a lovely pattern if stained right.

A little secret. I don’t know if it will help. Oils require a lint free cloth. I used rags inside panty hose. Let oil sit for a bit and rubs oil until dry. Dry for a day, about 30 colts and will have a French polish appearance.

thanks for the tip Greenhorn but a high lustre "french polish" is not my goal for this rifle. I have finished many stocks in my day have developed my own "secrets" to success. I had a Browning rifle with a high polish on it for many years and never did take a shine (pun intended) to the way it looked. I must admit though, that it put a lot of Venison on the table. LOL..........................Daniel

Tip: For oil, stains and waxes, I use those Kiwi Shoe polish cloths they sell on their display rack at the grocery store. Lint free and soft. Especially good for that Conservatory wax they sell at Lee Valley...gives a nice satin finish to wood.

A friend of mine uses a paste wax on his priced Kentucky Flint Locks...he has them wall mounted and the finish is real nice, more of a satin look than a shine. Problem is you have to wear gloves to handle them becasue the heat from your hands mares the surface.

Thanks Mike. I like the cloth that comes with prescription glasses, silk panties (not mine) are good and also panty hose works great.
