Barely a week after the Christchurch tragedy, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced an imminent ban on “all military-style semi-automatic weapons,” “all assault rifles,” “all high capacity magazines” and “all parts with the ability to convert any firearm into a military-style semi-automatic weapon.” She also issued an order reclassifying semi-automatic weapons to immediately prevent their sale to most licence holders.
Why don't they just ban the criminals from possessing guns, that would solve the problem.

The basics are..that under their definition of an MSSA ( Military Style Semi Automatic), any MSSA that is capable of holding more than 5 rounds is banned.
So as the law comes into force....owners will drill and rivet their mags, and all is well.

[COLOR=#281B20]I went through this in Canada in the late 80’s. Exactly that happened. They announced the bans in a midnight session of Parliament, did not air anything on MSM. Most people found out the hard way. In my case I took my Colt AR into a gun store to sell it on consignment. The owner told me to “get the fcku out of my (his) store.” I took the gun to my car and went back in. He had calmed down and apologized. I said I was completely unaware. He told me I had to surrender it to Metro Toronto Police. The gun had been converted to restricted status, so I could still own it if I met the retarded criteria. 6 months in the evidence lock up, I was interviewed by a detective in my home. He found I was military, and approved it. I had to show him 2 safes both bolted to concrete. One for the bolt, one for the rifle. I also had an HK G3 that was now “prohibited.” I was a young guy, and could not grasp getting nothing for my rifle so I sold it to another soldier who knew it was now illegal and didn’t care. That is how guns enter the black and illegal markets and end up in criminal hands. This is exactly what will happen in NZ. Their gun crime rates will go up not down. Now that I am American, I realize guns are not a privilege, and I am not a subject. I have the right to defend myself, and my family. In America we realize guns are not about guns. They are about preventing the loss of other rights and the prevention of an overbearing tyrannical government which so many Millenials and old bastards are so in favor of these days.

Canada’s gun laws manage basic hunting rifles like that intelligently and don’t need to change. But they are neither smart nor consistent regarding far more dangerous semi-automatic rifles, many of which (the restricted ones) have the very limited purpose under the law of being used for pleasure or sport shooting, or as a collectible.
I guess people don't hunt with semi's?????? Atleast they admit...

Military-style semi-automatics have been defined under New Zealand law as rifles with magazines exceeding seven shots, or with pistol grips, folding or telescopic butts, bayonet attachments or flash suppressors at the end of the barrel.
Semi's outside that cosmetic list seem to be totally unaffected if they don't meet the CURRENT rules and no change to things like the sale of suppressors is something that would be nice here.

"A" Category firearms are those that do not fall into any other category, and are the vast majority of legally-owned firearms in New Zealand, and support a surprisingly wide number of types. For example semi-automatic AR-15 style rifles are permitted in this category provided they can only hold 7 or less rounds as well as meeting the other criteria
Registration is not required under the law but the police carry out a regime similar to registration for all but "A Category" firearms. Firearms in any other category require a "permit to procure" before they are transferred.
I wonder how many gun shops are making a killing removing bayonet attachments and flash suppressors and selling solid stocks.... taking off the flash is OK I guess that is OK, just put on a sound suppressor.
