It's the 21st century... when will we throw out the 18th century policies and nonsense. The Indigenous, first settlers, Indian, native Americans or what ever title aren't mentally challenged adults, about time to treat them like responsible adults in my opinion. Incorporate the reserves and put those that need help on proper welfare and support and let them sell, lease or whatever the land they own and pay taxes etc., this race based nonsense should go. This class/race based set of ownership/laws are nothing but divisive and grounds for abuse (look at how much they get without proper accounting for it) and a sense of special entitlement as well as being discriminated against all at the same time.... idiotic!

If anyone cares to research "The White Paper on Indian Affairs",there's some very good observations and solutions written by former PM Chretien when he was Minister of Indian Affairs which was promptly shelved and buried for being too "radical" by Trudeau 1. One of the recommendations was repealing The Indian Act.

I don't think the problem is about "where it came from". It all about where it's going (or rather where it's going to go whether we like it or not). No one can live in the past. People must evolve or die.

Oh I already know alot, Saugene for example, the illegal fishing, the nets left out for weeks full of dead fish with no enforcement, nets blocking spawning rivers, corruption, harassment of the outsiders, wealth and unaccountability for chiefs.

Your last 3 words trimmer.

They are a dying breed and if they dont evolve they will die off soon. There is only so many of them left they can't live forever without some insest happening then that will really mess them up.

Around where I am there is already nothing left they cannot date their own as they are all family. Something must give soon or there wont be many around in 100 years. If they want to continue to live the way they are they won't last.

As far as I'm concerned they make enough to buy the land if they want it then buy it.

Name me one society that did not at one point go to war with another and displace them? The First Nations are well known to have been warriors who attacked neighboring tribes. They were also nomadic and moved around North America quite a bit. Does that mean they have claim to all the land they walked on? These treaties were signed generations ago and they now don’t want to live by them. $9 billion ??????
Anybody with a brain sees they want to cash out before Trudough sheds some fake tears and hands them ownership of the Bruce peninsula before he gets voted out. Don’t give me this kraapp about having something taken away. It happened in a time where none of us or them lived.

How many still live in teepees without hydro or water or anything motorized? What they want is to live with all the luxuries we have created, and live for free. Theres no fn alive today the faught off the yanks, so the fn that are here have nothing to claim IMO.

Just go live in the reserve for a week with them ,
ask them for their problems ....
Ask them Why ... did they not secede to integrate to this society ...?

The last time I visited friends on the "res",no one was being held against their will. Just sayin...........

Sorry but there's no gatekeeper or lock on the gate. Get with the program and evolve. Living inthe stone age passed a long time ago. Who says FN didn't displace others before them just because it isn't written anywhere. I know quite a few FN members who have done well for themselves and families, others just sit and wait for handouts.

I was taken from my family when I was seven, and sent to boarding school. Do you want to talk about it? Maybe you would like to talk about a Catholic nun that took too great of an interest in making sure the dirty little Indian boys washed their parts..

How about how families would send money for the children, but it always ended up in the office "for safe keeping". So safe it never was seen again by the kids.

I worked with a FN for years and he left the reserve when he was young and promised himself to never return to that life. I don't ever recall him claiming he had to escape from the reserve...lol

They do pay taxes to the province they live in, not federal tax...

Without doubt,that will go down in the annals of Canadian history as the greatest travesty ever perpetrated on people. Had the religious "authorities" that did that still been alive,no doubt they would have been charged and tossed in jail and the key thrown away. Official apologies have been communicated by every politician under the sun and billions of dollars in reparations made. It will never "make things right",but,it's really all modern society can do (besides ensuring it never happens,again). For many years,now,The UN has censured Canada for human rights violations regarding First Nations and failure to address the "aparthied" policies of The Indian Act. Canadian foreign affairs delegates have a hell of a lot of nerve lecturing other governments on their human rights records when we can't clean up our mess,first,and have been publicly called out on it as soon as they open their traps rendering them functionally impotent,yet,no government seems to be able to "find a pair",repeal The Act and trash the reserve system which clearly isn't working.

Sad to say not the case. Many schools were open well into the 1980s and the last were not closed down until 1990s. Lots of the people involved in running those schools are still alive.

Complex issue is an understatement and no way this will be resolved anytime soon and not before Trudeau is long gone from office i.e. his ability to interfere in major settlements will be minimal. Either way the 90B is like the ask at the start of any lawsuit - ridiculous. On another note I don't believe this has anything to do with the residential school program but is strictly directed at not getting what they were promised in the original treaty agreement(s). The actual settlement when it comes will be for far less and guaranteed to enrich the pockets of many lawyers on both sides. When the dust settles there will always be people on both sides saying that they got screwed.
