Im sure it was nice to see.
Perhaps someone can fill in more info for me. I grew up in the far east end of Ottawa in the 60's and I didn't have to go very far to be in the bush. I always remember thinking that Hungarians were normal and Pheasant too. It was easy to tell the tracks in the snow. I remember seeing them in the back yard in 69 after we moved to a brand new area that backed on to the Ottawa river. It's a parkway now. I recall still seeing them in the 80s in an undeveloped chunk of green in the middle of Ottawa, along with Pheasant. No doubt urban sprawl has eradicated most of the preferred habitat for these birds anymore.
So I really have no idea on the introduction and history of Huns in the province and Ottawa area in particular. If anyone can provide any info or links that would be cool.
Cheers
There used to be huntable populations of Huns in the Aylmer area, gone now due to farming practises, also when we moved to where we are 43 years ago, there was a small flock in the area which are now also gone due to fence rows drainage ditches and small brushy areas removed, all habitat which supported Huns, is now all gone.
They never were easy to spot in the summer, they don't fly as much as grouse. Winter was the time they became evident and their tracks were easy to pick out too.
There are plenty of upland game hunters here from across Ontario. Does anyone actually target them anymore or know of scattered populations still?
Cheers
A farmer from the Kitchener area told my buddy this past weekend he has been seeing coveys of them while working the land. I hope he wasn't just saying that!LOL
yeah, i still tell my kids the tooth fairy is real too. not sure when i'll have the heart to say any different.
i say if it was a hun it was a hun :P
I use to see them in the fields when I first moved to Russell but not anymore.
There’s a small covey of Huns in the Burford area. The land owners are very protective of them. Some times on a winter day you can see them out in the field.
Hey, ive hunted huns around Kemptville to Winchester areas for 30. Years.. spent last fall chasing them only twice. They are there but your going to knock on dozens of doors and walk a lot of miles.
Out of 11 farms I used to have access to, ive lost all but 3 to enter.
We only hunted the 3 coveys we found once.. on adjoining 500 acres or so.
Coveys ranged from 8-20 out of the 3. We only took 3 birds.. one property had one pair the dog found and we left them be.
One of the properties had bobwhite when I was a kid.. farmers son told me last year they haven't seen one in 20yrs...
Sad part is they told me that the old way (25yrs) ago they hunted them was to walk them up with 12 guys in a line... shooting out entire coveys.
Buddy of mine in Kemptville has had a few over winter in his yard at the bird feeders.
Frankly the limits should be reduced, and season doesn't close anymore in Nov.. frankly game bird management is gone in Ontario.
The reason there is no longer any real management of them is they are not a native species, just like pheasants and Jacks. Therefore the MNR has no real interest in managing them.
Don't know. Haven't heard or read much. I have heard in the past that MNR isn't concern about non native species. But honestly I can't say for sure this is just what have read and technically itt does make some sort of sense.
I don't think Grouse are hurting to much I have seen some areas that seem to be on a down cycle and my area at home finally seems to be on a up cycle possibly starting this year as I have not seen this many grouse in about decade.
Actually we have had this discussion before.
