Now that I have your attention...
I'm tired of people telling me "ew gross! Summer pike is nasty, catch and release catch and release!!!"
Fishing is a lot if fun. But I like to keep my limit so we have some wild food in the fridge.
??? Give me 10 good reasons why I shouldn't eat summer pike.

Can't give any reasons not to eat Pike any time of the year. If you can get them deboned at all they make for very good eating. My wife likes them better than Walleye. More taste and I can't disagree

I'm with yuo...I love to fish Pike.....great fun to catch on the river.
Can't think of too many reasons not to eat them... I do find the meat is a little 'soft' during the heat of the summer, but not a real issue if you're cooking it wrapped in foil.
Big fan of a pike fry. I also like the fact I only need to catch 1 in order to have a decent supper:)
I laugh at all the people afraid of the bones, just pull them out when you eat them. These are probably the people who eat boneless wings and boneless ribs.

I won't target them or allow them in my boat unless they come from oligotrophic or mesotrophic waters. I've often found pike from stained lakes to be horrendously slimy, sometimes they stink and the meat is mushy. I'm also not too keen on the idea that they can destroy your brand new Rapala by swallowing the thing.

I agree with rich and toddy. pike can be cleaned without bones, I did it once. But I don't take any chances any more for the reasons mentioned by these 2. They do taste great though.

I have a kid, I have a brother significantly younger than me too, ate tons of pike up near Kapuskasing for many many years. There is one story, my mom got a Y bone in her throat when she was a kid, the day before fathers day. Her dad got out the long needle nose pliers and got it out, these were his nasty greasy pliers, she had bought him new ones for fathers day but did not want to give them to him early.Quote:

I fillet my pike and very carefully look them over for bones, yes I had small kids but their not small now, so I wasn't suppose to feed them pike? I raised 3 kids current ages 27, 19, 14
This thread is hilarious. You guys do realize that Y bones are not spread out randomly all over the entire fish right? My kids are 7 and 9. Been feeding them pike since they started eating solid food. They love pike nuggets. Although my daughter likes perch better. Not sure what her problem is.

I fish with quite a few different guys and I clean all the catch on every trip and have been for years. The reason is simple, most guys haven't a clue how to CLEAN a fish properly so I don't let them go near the things. You can go to you tube and watch so-called experts clean fish and it makes me gag just to see them toss a skinned fillet back into the slime and gunk on the cleaning table. So I can imagine the number of y bones that get left behind on a pike. There is payback though. They get to do all the cooking and dishes later while I sit and have a beer.
I have to make sure there are no bones at all or my son and my buddy Tim let me know quite quickly by tossing it.

This guy is good at filleting pike, you have to listen to the host interrupt though.
As for kids and fish, our family has always given the tail piece to the kids. Anyone can make a tail piece boneless
Pike are a very tasty firm white fleshed fish. Most people won't deal with them because of their inability to correctly remove the Y-bones.
Honestly, I love to eat fish but to me a bunch of people sitting around the table plunging their fingers into their mouths and yanking out the tiny bones and putting them on the side of their plate is disgusting.

I don't fish as much as I used to, due to lack of time and opportunity. So - sadly - I haven't brought home any pike for years. :fish:
In the past however, I ate pike any chance I got without even filleting them "properly". My kids, when they were younger, got the cleanest pieces but I also taught them how to be careful with bones from ANY fish while enjoying a meal.
We will be spending a week at a waterfront cottage later this month and I sure hope they have tasty PIKE there! ;)
