Facebook and sub standard intelligence

For about the 10th time this week another “hunter” is asking the Facebook experts when the waterfowl seasons start. When they ask these questions, they don’t even state what area they will be hunting.
Every single hunter that buys a migratory bird lic. receives a brief summary of the waterfowl regulations that includes detailed information on seasons and bag limits.

In my opinion, if you don’t take the time to read the regulations, then you shouldn’t be hunting.

if you ask someone on Facebook, you deserve what you get!

But, but,... I thought FaceBook knows everything? Haha.

If you have your phone and show the C O the answer from facebook you won't get charged, seriously, my friend from facebook who I've never met in person told me.

I'm on a FB fishing site and some of the questions I see folks asking are real head shakers.One guy the other day mentioned he wanted to fish for sturgeon in the 613 region.

I really question the sanity of people who seem to live for Facebook. I think it's a form of mental illness.

Thank You for bringing that up!:thumbup: There are too many out there now that are too lazy to look things up for themselves, we see this on this forum quite often.
They ask questions that are answered in black and white in the regulations summary, but if you mention this to them they get very indignant and resort to at times name calling because someone had dared to speak the truth.

I am one of the first to help out new hunters and mentor many new hunters every year. Most of these people exchange many emails with me ahead of time so that we all know what to expect when we get out hunting. These are the kind of hunters I spend the time with and encourage.

Not only do some ask stupid questions but others give stupid answers swearing it's the truth.

Jaycee, you have to have a thick hide sometimes when your trying to help.

I get guestions ( not on the forum) from people that want to start hunting this year, about where to take the course, only days or weeks before the season starts.

Then there is the person( on the forum or in person) that asks the same question that you have answered maybe a few thousands of times.

Thick skin and lots of patience will see you through.

Well golly, I know when the season starts in my area. What I could use is the location of the birds and the field to already be set with decoys and blinds and if someone could pick me up so I don't use my own gas, I have gun and shells, but not too many s if it's a good field I may need to borrow some :)

You likely be hunting that local field that you could never get permission for because I have the farmer under contract to only allow me to hunt there.:sad:

Farcebook ? ? What a joke ! I did join it a few years ago as a way of keeping in touch with friends and co-workers due to my impending retirement but just couldn't get into it. So much useless babble. Not to mention their security breaches and what they do with your info. My friends and buddies from work know how to reach me the old fashion way on the phone and truth is I enjoy that time spent so much more.

When it comes to getting information off the internet …. really ? Farcebook ? Where everyone is an expert ? Like my brother says; Opinions are like A-holes … everyone has one and they usually stink !

I have no idea why people ask questions about the rules. You should never go by any ones answers as they are only opinions, not fact. READ THE REGS, find your own answer. But must say it fun to read all the crap that comes out some times.

Because they are too lazy to look up the information themselves, they would rather someone else look it up for them.

The problem with helping people who don't bother to look up a simple thing such as when a season starts is you can be certain that they won't look up harder hunting/fishing regulations such as party hunting requirements or hunter orange requirements. I don't think we as a group should be encouraging that kind of laziness. Sort of a "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" mentality. Now before some point you this may be callous, I would still help someone who tried to look up a regulation and needed help interrupting it. There is a big difference between "When does the pheasant season start in WMU 90?" and "I looked in the hunting regs and I found that I have a daily limit of 10 in WMU 69B but a daily limit in WMU 69A, does that mean I can hunt for 7 more birds in WMU 69A if I fill my daily limit in 69B?"

I hear ya, but sometimes someone might just ask "When does the pheasant season start in WMU 90? " because they might want to start a conversation about pheasant hunting or it was just something on their mind at the time.....

There is also the "Burn out" factor. Every year there is the same old questions coming from a new group of people. Everyone tries to answer all their questions, and then they disappear.

Next year same old questions, new group....which disappears as well.

Not sure of your point. Even if a hunter does not get a single bird, there is a lot to do. Scouting, rigging up, putting out decoys, collecting up decoys, building a hide. After everything thing that comes before and after a hunt, is it your option that if someone breasts out a bird that none of the work counts?

If I had to speculate I believe what was trying to convey was with all the work invested in waterfowling a little more effort in recovering more from the bird would be more appropriate

what does he want people to do? You take the breast, the legs, and only meat left needs you to simmer the bird in a large pot of water for two to three hours.

Again I believe he is referring to those who only harvest the breast. If you take the legs that is so much better. I go so far as taking the wing drum, heart, gizzard, and can't forget the liver for some of the finest pate you could make.

There is that too.
I was think more along the lines of:
First year.
New hunters asks a few hundred questions, and members answer them.
Second year.
New group same questions...same answers.

There are even members inviting them out for hunts, but very few takers.

After a while I think Members just get tired of replying to the same questions every year with few if any results, and just start ignoring new ( Inexperienced) hunters.

I feel it may be more trying to filter out those who are truly interest in in getting into hunting and those merely looking for a cheap guided hunt.
Hard to take a new hunter serious who shows up in Sept. looking for a mentor/hunting experience when in the spring have yet to get someone to come out on a training run and basically learn how to hunt with a pointing dog.

Good point. I have to point out to my wife at times, that if she wants to hunt or fish there is more that goes into it then putting the gun or tackle box in the truck one day a year.

I will say that people that have come out with me have been good. :) Except one guy, that has a few things putting him behind the eight ball. Not his fault that he has a hard time getting away from the wife and kids, but when he does get out( twice in four years) very safe with a firearm and a darn good shot. :thumbup:

Well, I have done my best to get everyone motivated again!! I’m looking forward to posting some photos of duck hunting after the 28th.

There is the North-western Ontario and the Great lakes/Upper St. Lawrence River populations where Sturgeon fishing is completely closed as these populations are listed an endangered. The Southern Hudson Bay-James Bay population is listed as Special Concern and has an open season.

What I am saying is "why would he drive all the way across southern Ont, when he has some of the best hunting all around him,as we have seen in some of his posts and pics.

When I pointed out it's about the same distance from both Chesley and London, the distance was a pointless argument.

Then you try to Argue that he should only hunt around Chesley because there is more game.

If the number of birds you shoot is all that matters to you, go ahead and enjoy.

Some( not you I am guessing) are will to travel to other places and enjoy meeting new people and sharing a hunt.

As for "bird numbers " I could care less, many a time I go hunting with someone and my dog , and I go home without having fired a shot, I just enjoyed doing the "calling " and sending my dog out to retrieve.
