Anyone use tape or a cover over the end of the barrel, to keep snow/rain/debris out?
Likely a good idea, but I've never bothered, nor do I know anyone who does.
Yes all the time .
Only on my ML.
i have a sock i use/ sleeve.
x2 on the finger cots...and only on my ML...there is a old saying "Keep your Powder Dry )
On my muzzle loaders, and on any rifle larger than .243 , as when traveling through the bush, if rifle is on a sling over the shoulder, it doesn't take much to have a piece of twig or shouch to fall down the barrel and cause a catastrophe when the trigger is squeezed
on a shot.
Duct tape is tougher than finger cots and stays on better in this case.
Taping over a barrel makes me nervous. I can't get over the "obstructed muzzle" concept that's been ingrained for 60 years. I always carry a shotgun or rifle in the muzzle down position when the weather is really crappy. Taping over a barrel may be fine. It's just me.
Taping it all the times-when weather pushes me to do it.Electric tape.Shot thru it with muzzleloader ,rifle .Shot shotgun thru finger condoms(alas i do not like them-they are a pain to pull over front sigh ,and they rip readily). If fair weather -do not use nothing.
the tape is long gone before the bullet leaves the muzzle,
That was the philosophy of a friend of mine, "I always carry muzzle down " till one time the muzzle went lower than he thought and unknowingly got some dirt [obstruction ] in the barrel and guess what happened ?, he wound up buying a new rifle after it blew up on him and he didn't get his caribou and ruined his hunt.
Tape over the muzzle is not an obstruction, just a precaution/safety measure.
Air pressure alone ahead of the bullet or shot will blow the tape off, proven by slow motion camera.
I use these for the ML.
Much tougher than a finger dome and stays put better than tape.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f801bd5fcd.jpg

All the time. Yellow electrical tape. Never had an issue neither has my son or grandson...
If necessary, I have found a piece of plastic wrap and a rubber band very handy to keep water out of my barrel.
electric tape works great
Heres my 44mag after I fired through electrical tape. As you can see it did not blow it off but rather cut through it. And this is just a square with very little wrapped around the edgesAttachment 39228
I guess it's a bit more peace of mind but it really isn't necessary IMO. In 30 years of hunting big game with firearms individually, in small groups and large groups, neither I or anyone I know has ever used tape on their barrel and none of these people have ever had an issue because they didn't.
Being aware of where your muzzle is will keep more stuff out of your barrel than tape.

I'm usually more concerned with wetting the powder from getting condensation in the barrel from being in and out of a warm vehicle or camp than getting moisture down the barrel, but yeah it's definitely more of a concern with ML's.

If its snowing/raining then yes I cover the barrel. Dollar store bag of balloons will last you a lifetime. You can even get them in orange, if you wish.
