Hi guys.
with rifle season about to open up here in the big bush, I am wondering.
who keeps bow hunting, who stays at home and who picks up the gun? If you keep bow hunting what do you change in your game. Obviously the pre rut turns to the rut, but what about the pressure if you share private land or hunt public land?
If I am not mistaken, bow season is closed in most units during a gun hunt....check the regs to be certain.

Best to contact the MNRF concerning your WMU ....I will be rifle hunting ...but a few years ago I was told I could bow hunt as long as I adhered to wearing colours . You are not allowed to bow hunt during a controlled hunt as it says SHOTGUN AND MUZZLE LOADERS ONLY !

I love archery hunting but there's just something about that rifle hunt that keeps me coming back. Played eenie meenie miney mo at the gun cabinet yesterday and checked zero on the two winners. Looking forward to some long afternoon sits in hopes of a poke at a big bodied buck.

I usually pull out a gun. But this year my GFs daughter may have her 1st deer hunt. She's not comfortable with a rifle yet. She's 13. So we'll be using my xbow. And may hunt during gun season

i was not so much asking about regulation. Bow hunting during any big game rifle seasons you need hunters orange until you are in a tree stand or blind. Be it bear, moose or deer season where I am I must where orange until in my stand or blind.
I am more asking about tactics.
I personally hunt a part of the private land I know the other two guys who hunt rifle don’t go in hopes they push deer towards me as they do not take the same care to be unnoticed that I do.
I am going to hunt some public land during rifle that I usually only hunt during bow only for deer. I have my spot for tree stand picked out and also a couple lines to still hunt. I am just looking to get some other ideas from other how only hunters.
I see you are from Seguin..up that way I'd find a beaver dam or creek crossing and stay downwind of it, try and catch a buck scent checking some doe bedding areas...Quote:

I hunted during the bow/muzzle loader hunt a few years back, did not have a smoke pole yet at that point, 15 yards from a doe and 2 yearlings with no antlerless tag and they did not know what I was sitting in orange on the ground in the snow.Quote:

I'd have no idea as in my area there is no bow hunting during a controlled deer hunt. But if I could I would find a place that I can see further and hope someone pushes a deer in my direction.

You are still required by law.
But I wonder why so many people don't want to wear orange. Personally I think it's important not to get shot.

I don't think it would be safe not to wear orange even if everyone followed all the rules. You have someone all camo up standing or sitting by a tree 150yds from you and a deer walks past you at 50yds. You pull up, you will not see the guy in camo, but you would see him in orange. Had this happen to me many years ago. Friend was pushing a small area of bush still hunting really, towards me. I big Doe stands up 30yds in front of me. I pull up to take shot, there is my buddy that I hadn't seen or heard yet, doing the same thing. We both drop our guns down and move to the left out of the line of fire. Pull up again as deer still there. Turns out my buddy did the same thing and we see each other again. If we were not wearing orange, we would not have seen the other person I don't believe. Orange is a good thing, even on your own property. I have told the land owner where I hunt and his neighbor that they should never go in the bush without at least an orange hat when they go for a walk. They are not hunts and know one but me has permission to hunt. That doesn't mean there isn't some trespassing or on the next property lining up a shot with them in the background.

Likely for the same reason people don't want to use seat belts or motorcycle helmets. People hate to be dictated to by the "nanny staters". Some also make the case that hunters are being discriminated against simply because of an activity they choose to be involved in,much like the yellow stars Jews were made to wear during the Holocaust.I've had people tell me that the prime reason for hunter orange was to single out hunters,specifically, for harassment by law enforcement I'll bet we could fill an entire separate thread with this one.Quote:

I have never hunted during rifle season for deer but I may this year and glad these points came up. I am guilty of taking my orange off in the tree stand during moose season while I now hunt deer. That won’t happen again, even though I hunt private land where no one is moose hunting.

That's not something you want to admit to on a public forum as it's illegal to hunt without it on. Ungulates only see orange as a shade of grey anyway so it's not a big deal. Bear eyesight is different, they can differentiate colors quite well. Therefore with bear hunting for safety sake you still need your blaze orange on while you are on the ground but once you are up in a treestand you can remove it if there is no other rifle season open.Quote:

Boy are you ever touchy lol. I was just making a comment on blaze orange hunting requirements in AB. There are none, not even for small game either. You implied Alberta was all flat land with coolies. I actually checked google earth to be sure before commenting that you were in fact incorrect. I have no idea on hunting pressure, that's why I didn't comment on it. But I would imagine northern Ontario doesn't have high hunter populations either.
Regardless of hunter numbers, overall, Ontario has more people in the GTA than in the entire province of Alberta. That means the little available hunting area in proximity to that population can have very high hunter density.Quote:

Sure wish I could bow hunt then. Bow season closes during the controlled hunts here. Even if I apply for the controlled, and wear orange, i'm not allowed to hunt with a bow in hand. It's nonsense.
