Hi, I've owned Labs in the past and now think I would like a CBR.
I need a dog for home with the family, 2 high energy boys 8 and 11, and also for duck hunting.
I hunt all season starting with a canoe in the marsh and finishing with a V Hull motor boat on the big water.
I've read that CBRs aren't so good with kids? Any truth to this.
I've also read that CBRS are great protectors which I really like so that I know that my family is safer when I'm home.

Based on ONE CBR we had : very loyal to the hunter, fine with kids ( 6 in our family) very protective of the home.
loyal story: Brownie was my brother's dog. When my brother joined the RCMP , Brownie would go to the end of the lane way every day and wait for him to come home . He was eventually found dead at the end of the lane way.
My buddy has owned at least two at a time for 30 years now. His 3 children grew up with them from birth. His youngest daughter just had her first baby and just purchased a CBR puppy. They are territorial and need a firm hand but not sure why they have a reputation of not liking children?
As for being good protectors of home & family? I doubt my buddy locks his doors....
Alright, if no-one else will admit it, I have to say that I cannot think what CBR stands for?

I had to Google it as well. Code talk in the dog forums. Chessie for sure. I had a BLR for 14 years. It's been about five years since he died and my lawn looks great! Never again.

As for the reputation it was told to me from a couple of Lab breeders so wanted to make sure it was it wasn't true.
Now the next problem trying to find a breeder.
"Locally" Henry Goeree (Skeetercreek) is a long time chessie breeder. As well, others can be found on the Canadian Kennel Club's website under - https://www.ckc.ca/Choosing-a-Dog/PuppyList/Breed.aspx?breedname=Chesapeake%20Bay%20Retriever& breedcode=RCB
Depending on the breeder some may show their dogs, others may run hunt tests and others hunt their dogs. As this is a smaller pool of breeders vs Labradors or Goldens, many will do all three. Be sure to look for breeders who have health clearances on their dogs and ask the questions to ensure you find the hunting companion you are looking for!
Brent Samis and Sheelagh Gunn are expecting a litter. They're not far from Barrie 705 689 5295 . They're wonderful people, Brent hunts and trains hunt test retrievers.

I have a young male CBR. He is my first after a lifetime of Labs. When looking for a new pup I was having a hard time finding a Lab I liked. I hunt a lot late season and coat quality is important to me. Because I hunt from a small boat I want a dog of a more relaxed nature and a lot of the Labs I see now can be quite hyper. I am VERY happy with the Chessie. He is a great hunter with a wonderful nose and seems impervious to cold weather. He reminds me of a good blue-collar worker. He is not what I would call highly intelligent but he shows up every day ready to work. It takes a little longer to get through to him but once he learns something he never goes backwards. He gives the impression of being tough and stoic but is actually kind of a soft nature. He responds best to gentle training methods with lots of repetition. He was not hard to train you just can't be in a rush. He is calm and relaxed in the boat but really turns on when birds are down.
He is also a house dog and very good with my grandchildren when they visit. He is very alert and quick to alarm bark if he hears or sees anything. However, he is in no way nasty, I can't imagine him actually biting a burglar but he would certainly let you know he was there.
