I was on my way to buy a "whole package " set up today from kijiji, but got a call half hr into my drive that the seller forgot the batteries at his cottage. I figured I was near Bass Pro anyways, so i went in and bought the clam adapter plate as i already have an auger. I'm now shopping for a drill and at least a 4ah battery. Does anyone have any suggestions? Not looking for top of the line, but not bottom of the barrel either:). Any feedback is appreciated.

Dewalt, Milwaukee, Makita all are great drills. Even the Ridgid is really good. Just a matter of which is the best deal.
I would get a 5a battery if you’re going to use it for an auger

I have the clam adapter plate and 5 inch lazer auger. I use a 20v Dewalt drill, with 4ah battery. It has worked flawlessly for me. I keep an extra battery inside my suit to keep it warm, but I haven’t had the need to change batteries on the ice yet. We don’t get a huge amount of ice down here in the SW, but 12-14 inches is not uncommon. One winter, the plate nearly touched the ice before I hit water. You will love the setup !!!!!!Quote:

I'd go the other way. Buy the cheapest drill you can find and replace it every couple years.
I bought a Maximum from CT on sale last winter for my Clam plate adapter with a Swede Bore 6" auger and it works great for St Clair ice. If I was drilling in thick ice.....Simcoe, Nipissing etc. I would go with a heavier battery....no question
Home Depot Rigid’s now have a lifetime service package with the battery.... just repeating what I saw in the store, best read the fine print

I think I've narrowed it down to a DCD996 and a 5ah battery. There's a wholesaler out of Hamilton who will sell me that package for $250.
If anyone is looking for a Dewalt, this guy is a wholesaler and has decent prices.

You will be happy with that setup. I use the same drill and have two of the 5aH batteries. Depending on ice hardness and temperature I am getting 600 to 750 inches of 8 inch hole per battery as long as i keep the blades sharp.

I bought a Dewalt Drill/ Hammerdrill Brushless that came with a 6 amp hr. battery and have not looked back since the day of purchase. When I bought this it also came with an optional purchase of 2- 4 amp hr batteries at an incredibly low price of 0-$'s. Happy as hell for the past 2 yrs. Buy what you can for what you can as long as it is 18 v's, brushless and as big of an amp hr that you can.
I use a Fin Bore 8" as well without a Clam Plate ( my Fin Bore has been customised) with a welded extension of 12 "s love the Fin Bore. My romance with electric augers started 10 - 11 years ago with a StrikeMaster Electra 1200, will never go back to gas. By the way the StrikeMaster Electra 1200 still works great just went this way for weight, 12 pounds verus 23 pounds.Quote:
