Just turn African Swine Fever lose on a few feral hogs and dig some big holes..
Over half of China’s pigs died last year from AFS. It would have a serious economic impact in Canada if that happened. It would cost us billions of dollars. Really dumb idea
There are 4 billion dollars in live hog sales per year in Canada. It is a major export. Cash croppers would be affected, truckers, packers, consumers, feed mills and many others.

Hunters driving economy to ...
Australia has had success with it's poison baiting program, and the US wild life service and the States are testing some Sodium Nitrate based poison baits.
Australia has seen some negative side effects from it's program, and with the memory of the last time the states allowed wide spread use of poison ( General poison ). Public option could make it's use a real hot potato, no matter how safe or effective it is.
The only tool we have that effects pigs and only pigs is Africa Swine Fever. As people have pointed out here, it's use would have to be very surgical or the damage would be terrible. The Idea of using it surgical, could be an Island miles off shore with no farms. Even in that case the island would have to be quarantined for years, to prevent the spread of the Virus to the mainland.
Not true Premature slaughter of sick pigs spread the disease
With high virulence forms of the virus, ASF is characterized by high fever, loss of appetite, haemorrhages in the skin and internal organs, and death in 2-10 days on average. Mortality rates may be as high as 100%. The organism which causes ASF is a DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family.

Though it appears my guesstimate of 95% is on the high side due to the high mortality rate...the are still using mass 'culls' to try and control the spread :
Quote:
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that all provinces in Vietnam have reported ASF outbreaks and that more than 5,880,000 pigs have been culled since the first case was discovered in February.
Quote:
In February, Mr Sun slaughtered 15,000 of his pigs to prevent the spread of the disease, even though government inspectors had declared the herd healthy.
Quote:
So far, it says it has culled 1.2 million pigs, putting thousands of small producers out of business. McCracken and others say that is a significant underestimate.
Quote:
Though China is the epicenter and the worst-affected country, Vietnam has also been forced to cull 2 million of its 30 million pigs, according to Reuters. And tourists have brought the disease into several countries in Europe, including Poland and Romania, where it’s spreading among wild boar.
The question is. How does ASF not wipeout the native pigs in Africa. Do the wart hogs and bush pigs have a resistance to it or is it nothing more then a bad flu to them. Even if a health pig did not come in contact with a sick one, the virus is in the soil for years.
