Hi Everyone
We my lease is up and I'm thinking of this time buying a truck instead of leasing , just wasn't for me.
I'm torn between a dodge and a ford , Im looking at basic models nothing fancy . looking at the ram 1500 crew cab 4 x 4 and a ford F150 XLT both in the 2020 2019 year range.
Just looking for some of your thoughts and advice
I bought a Ford F-150 last fall and I am very happy with how it performs and how comfortable the truck is to drive. There is lots of room for the driver and passengers and it handles well in snow, mud etc.
I would suggest you go and test drive both trucks to see what you think. Also sit in the back seats so you can get an idea of how comfortable it is and how much space passengers will have. I bought my truck when there was employee pricing and the local dealer, Leslie Motors was great to deal with.
XLT with the Eco.
Nice amenities, good price, and extremely good fuel economy.
I don't know where you are looking, but I know my Ford dealership just started 0% on their F150s, with some decent discounts. I'm actually thinking of trading my 2015 in...
I live in Guelph , but willing to go wherever for a good deal

My buddy was a high up Ford mechanic for a while, he hated the Ecoboost engines. The fuel economy is great, until you climb a hill or tow anything, etc, etc, etc. I was talking to him about one guy I worked with at the time who had one. My friends opinion is that the Ecoboost is only good on fuel is you have nothing in the truck and don't have a heavy foot, if you have a heavy foot or tow then get the 8 cyl and drive as you normally would and you will be as good or better off as the Ecoboost. He also had issues at that time with the cost to maintain those systems, but that was years back, when they first put that engine into the F150.
Best of luck on the search, one side of my family are Dodge only, they use them on the farm and have few issues. The other side of the family is Toyota and they never break, but they do cost a premium.

It's less about the engine, than it is about the grey matter operating it.
My pal had the same truck with the 5.0L Coyote engine, could never get it below about 11.9L/100.
My 2014 XLT with the 5 litre gets 9 l/ 100k at 90 kmh, and 13 when pulling my 19 foot boat. I had a 2011 eco boost, and got roughly the same.
My 2011 eco boost developed intercooler issues as well as timing chains and sprocket issues....traded it on the 2014. I’ve had great luck with this truck. I wouldn’t even consider a Dodge. But that’s just me. They look great but don’t seem to stand up.

As fox has said. Before you decide on which truck, ask what you want to do with it 90% of the time.
Bigger power and towing capacity is nice. But if you only use it's power and are only towing a few times a year, and the rest of the time your hauling yourself and a few bags of groceries it's a waste.
Where you use it matter a lot too. City or highway..
My best on my 2018 Silverado is 9L/100 and average is 14/100. I couldn't wrap my head around having turbos running all the time, but that's just me. Just a thought.
I have had both ford and dodge trucks as rentals for 2 weeks each and both made long trips.
ram 1500 with the hemi cost me a few bucks due to it's stupid auto dimming headlights. Just outside of Cochrane I met a vehicle and seconds before we met the high beams kicked on under their own power, the lady cop was not amused and left me with a couple tickets to say thank you. I had issues with the rotary gear selector in -30 temps. Gas mileage was around 12LP 100 cruising gently but as soon as you hit hilly terrain or broke 95 kph the mileage crapped out pretty quick.
The F150 with 3.5 eco went from Barrie to northern Alberta and back with only a couple short nap breaks. For the whole trip including some crazy snowy weather the mileage sat at 10.8 all highway miles. You could make it drink but had to shove it way beyond smart levels above the speed limit. Did not ride as smooth as the dodge but felt more like a truck too.

I get how fuel mileage is certainly a factor in buying a new vehicle but it amazes me how anytime any forum talks trucks it immediately goes straight to that. How can fuel mileage be such a big factor when your buying a truck!
So Here is what sold me on my Ram. I know I am a bit superficial on my wants but hey we all have vices:
Driving Dynamics: It really does drive smooth like a car and can drive aggressively-ish when needed. Coming from several sports cars it was important to still have some feeling of sportiness. You would be surprised how awesome it handles and drives with independent rear susp compared to some others that have yet to make the switch.
Infotainment / Audio:
You say you want something not to loaded with options so infotainment probably isn't a big thing for you but i would say the Ram has the best for sure. I am certainly not a fanboy either as this is my first FCA vehicle. As for the stereo i got the upgraded 10 speaker system but still replaced the rear under seat sub with a new amp and sub so i guess sounds is big for me too.
Powertrain (5,7): Powerful (adds to driving dynamics), sounds great, known to be pretty reliable. Pulled a large camper with it for a few years and although it revved high due to low axle ratio it never came close to overheating the trans or motor.
Comfort: I have leather and they are very comfy. Cons: rear isn't flat across the floor, maybe fixed for newer models. Makes a difference with a big dog wanting to lie down. The cab is also nice and quite, when I dont have the stereo cranked.
Fuel mileage, since it will come up again - not great at all, i drive more aggressive than most though with plenty of stop and go to work. If you baby it and drive slow its on par.
At the end of the day you will find lots to love with any truck and plenty of people who feel theirs is the best. And why wouldn't they, if they didnt like them they would have bought something else!
I would say though I don't expect mine to be the most reliable in the bunch, for that i would probably look at the Toyota, but that's got its own pros/cons. For me though I can get away with repairing most non invasive parts myself so at least I can save lots of money that way.
Take a test drive, compare features, price and feel. Buy what puts a smile on your face!
My thoughts exactly! It's made to be a utility vehicle, not a commuter car. On another note, I'm not a fan of the latest gas turbo craze. If you plan on owning the same truck for the long term, I think a V8 will save you money on maintenance and give you the best all around performance.Quote:

We went with this beast in November because our last one was great . Until the deer jumped out into it lol. Cant find a front view lol. We put over 10 thousand km in it and it's just about to roll over 100 thousand. It has a great system in it remote start and it known to be reliable. Bonus is they are the most under appreciated vehicles that are dirt cheap driven by old men .
When we had to clean the last one out the trunk was half empty we had a 2020 wrangler rental and it completely filled the jeep lol. Lots of space in them

If it were me and i was going to keep the truck for some time I would get the v8 for it's proven longevity but if I was going to deal it every few years I would lean toward fuel economy.
That's a load of truth, I ended up getting a 3/4 ton gasser expecting and budgeting for the same mileage as my last 3/4 ton gasser... big boo boo on that math. I put on between 75 and 100 thousand K a year and at 22L per 100 km it would have easily covered the cost of a diesel and all the problems associated with a GM diesel.Quote:

Don’t be scared of a diesel. Get something with a Cummins in it everyone will tell you maintenance is more expensive. Bs. I have First gen second gen forth gen I’ll take diesel over any gaser

When I purchased my Chev Silverado 2010 5.3L crew cab with lots of bells and whistles I questioned the gas mileage . A buddy who owned trucks all his life bluntly said " ya don't buy a truck to save a buck" . I looked at Dodge and Ford before buying. Dodge offered the best deal price wise and Ford was about the same as Chevy/GMC. Not a big Dodge fan as past experience found them hard to start in the cold and find Ford's ride like a truck Plus that aluminum truck bed would require a 3/4 inch piece of plywood to protect it so hence my choice. Would I buy Chev truck again ? Nope. While made in Canada they were good but mine was the first of the Mexican built ones and after what GM did to Oshawa as of recent and the overall fit and finish of their product... I am not a happy GM owner. I am considering a Subaru Outback AWD .They have great gas mileage and seeing as I have a 5x10 trailer to haul stuff in and most of my boats aren't that big towing shouldn't be an issue.

I can;t argue with what your saying but i bet plenty of people who have trucks could buy a little car with great mileage and rent a truck as needed and come out on top. 15k brand new little honda or Kia or something + rent when you need truck would not equal the 40-60k some of us are putting into our trucks plus fuel.Quote:

I’m lucky to have a company truck that comes home with me every night; I love driving a truck but am always surprised at the number of trucks I see running beside me down the 407. I’m $800-900 per month in fuel and certainly wouldn’t be doing that if it was out of my pocket.
