Is it just me or what ? Re; Cashiers asking for donations

Is it just me or do you find after saying no to the cashier after she asks you to donate a buck or two to whatever cause that store is backing that week that their attitude towards you isn't quite the same ? I'm not cheap. I have my list of groups that I will donate to. I do not like panhandling... especially at a corporate store that is already making a profit from me shopping there. Does the corporation match my donation as in dollar for dollar ? Does the cashier get a bonus or prize for scoring the most donations ?

I just say, no thanks.

Most cashiers detest having to ask you about the round up style donations it's just part of doing what you are told. I have never heard of one getting a bonus from it but who knows.

Perhaps once that I felt I got a funny look for saying no but I don't believe in those sort of things. The overall egg collection fee is huge. I would bet that a minimum of 10% goes right back into store pockets.

It's a pet peeve of mine. I feel the same way. If the store was matching $ for $ I'd for over the buck or two, but when I'm shopping there, there's enough of my money being spent. Another is, when I'm out for dinner and the waitress asks if I want change back. Bring me my change and I'll decide what I want to tip without you having to ask for it. The biggest rip off is having to pay a .05 for a plastic bag because they don't want people using plastic bags because it's bad for the environment. Well if it's that bad why not switch over to paper bags. Then it wouldn't bother me as much. That nickel a bag is the biggest money grab ever...

We mostly always pay up the extra dollar or 2 when they ask. I dont think they receive any extra bonus for it it just something the stores do to help. Only about 3 to 5 percent of the time we say not right now.

Some of these organizations needs all the help they can get . They are always changing the cause so the same store will do many different causes each year . No different from When the fire trucks block the parking lot for their annual boot drive. They always get a few bucks too.

I get tired of the setup in front of the door every single weekend at every busy store all year round. It used to be just local groups once in a blue moon but in my neck of the woods it's a constant bombardment from every charitable cause under the sun. Then the cashier still asks if you'd like to donate.

We get the same but it is mostly raffle tickets, Lions club, hospital, etc. Doesn't really bother me but it's a small town and you know most of them anyway.

No, I haven't felt a difference after saying No thank you....

For every cent they collect and donate, the store gets a TAX right off.

Same as any charitable donation, but they get the tax deduction not you.

Anyhow, I normally do pitch in the $1 or $2 that they ask for ... I don't mind helping. But I've said no a few times ... especially when I've been back to that store 3 times in the past 2 days. I hear a lot of people saying no. If the cashier changes mood, well, screw them ... it's your decision, and they have no clue how else you are helping. You might have just donated $10k to a church ... who knows. If they want to be judgmental, you have a right to judge them right back.

I can’t say I remember getting attitude either way. I’m sure the majority of them hate asking for donations. It’s my business what I decide to do.

Not income, it's a donation. So yes they still get a tax credit on your donation.

When you donate this way...your money goes to the corporation who gets the tax write of (usually for their foundation - another tax write off), stop doing it. Give to your local church, mosque, shriners, food bank, ect. Tim's smile days, Bell lets Talk, Happy Meal meal are tools in which the your money is helping corporation not pay taxes. Also, each day a portion of electrical, carrying costs, operating expenses, wages are all tallied up in the tax write off scheme corporations use. Give local, give often

OK, I didn't know that! That is a big deal to me! But I'm surprised, they can receive this money, and the donate it as if it comes off their bottom line, without every having to declare it as income ... sounds crazy ... huge loophole. It's like you can show the money leaving the revenue, but you aren't showing it come in as revenue.

Mmmmmmmmmmm ? Didn't give much thought as to the money. Just thought they handed it over to whatever charity it was collecting for. As in a community service type of thing. That be downright skanky to claim a corporate deduction off of it !

Yes they get the tax write off that's why they do more than 1 charity now

It'd be nice to know which ones are legit, the ones where all the donations actually end up where you expect them to. Sick kids, Ronald McDonald house, poppies are all seemingly good 'charities' but if stores are getting a percentage of those donations then its shameful.

I go to the LCBO on a regular basis, just to see what's on sale. They are always asking and I always give for Sick Kids, but none of the others. It would be nice to know 100% of my donation goes to Sick Kids.

There's a list kicking around someplace that shows what percentage of your donation actually ends up where you expect it to. In some organizations as much as 90 percent goes to administration and executives of that charity and a measly 10 percent ends up helping the needy.
United Way was listed as one of the better groups.

The thing is that most of us want all the money to help the charities, not the store franchise that is already way overpriced.

The worst offender, for the 11th year in a row is UNICEF,whose CEO receives $1,200,000 per year, plus a Rolls Royce for his exclusive use wherever he goes, and an expense account that is rumored to be well over $150,000.
Only pennies from the donations go to the UNICEF cause (less than $0.14 per dollar of income).

The second worst offender this year is Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross.
Her salary for the year ending in 2009 was $651,957 plus expenses. She enjoys 6 weeks fully paid holidays including all related expenses during the holiday trip for her and her husband and kids, and 100% fully paid health & dental plan for her and her family….for life!
This means out of every dollar they bring in, about $0.39 goes to charity causes.

The third worst offender, again for the 7th time, was Brian Gallagher, President of the United Way. He receives a $375,000 base salary (US funds), plus so many expense benefits it’s hard to keep track as to what it is all worth, including a fully paid lifetime membership at 2 golf courses
(1 in Canada, 1 in the USA), 2 luxury vehicles, a yacht club membership, 3 major company gold credit cards for his personal expenses… and so on….
This equates to about $0.51 per dollar of income going to charity causes.

Fourth worst offender, in the fourth spot for every year since this information has been made available since 1998, is amazingly yet again, World Vision. Its President (Canada) receives $300,000 base salary, plus a home valued in the $700,000 – $800,000 range (completely furnished, all housing expenses, including taxes, water/sewer, telephone/fax, HD/high speed cable, weekly maid service and pool/yard maintenance), fully paid private schooling for his children, upscale automobile, and a $55,000 personal expense account for clothing/food, plus a $125,000 business expense account.
And get this: because it is a “religious based” charity, World Vision pays little or no taxes, can receive government assistance and does not have to declare where the money goes.
Only about $0.52 of earned income per dollar is available for charity causes.

The Salvation Army’s Commissioner Todd Bassett, who receives a salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2 billion dollar organization.
Which means about $0.93 per dollar earned, is readily available and goes back out to local charity causes.

Not for profit is a tricky title....

I use self-checkouts wherever they are offered so this doesn't happen often. When it does I say no thanks. I don't give the cashier a hard time. Not their fault.

My family supports three charities on a regular basis,the first and largest is Shriner's Children's Hospitals (been a proud member for many years),second is Sick Kids and third is the Heart&Stroke Foundation. Although,I'd love to help them all,unfortunately,that's not realistic.

Because I question their motives ... it's the motives that I have a REAL issue with!
So, I care!

Interesting way my original post went. It was about attitude but where our money goes is important too. To repeat myself … If I say no to a cashier I shouldn't get attitude. If I say No or not now or I already did or whatever I should not receive any less than their normal service. It is an interesting topic as to where your money/donation goes and to hope much actually gets to those in need. As to comments posted I totally agree that some so called charities are just money grabs . Be a smart shopper and put it where you feel best ?
