Heritage Fishing Tackle

I had an idea while doing spring cleaning of my tackle box that it might be interesting to see some of the Heritage /Antique handme down tackle that other guys have collected thru the years.

For example; I inherited my fathers tackle box and I found a pair of metal (brass?) bobbers in it. I've been fishing since the early 60's and I had never seen these, so they predate that era, at least in southern Ont. Maybe they were more common on the East coast.

If anyone knows about these let me know....if you have heritage tackle that us old guys may enjoy seeing again, post up a pic...

Mike is that a $1 coin beside them. If so they are huge. Can't imagine what they were used for or how they were used. Been fishing a long time and have seen numerous collections but never seen anything like that...

I do believe they are gill net floats. Extremely old ones!

Can you take them apart , unscrew them. Is there something inside? I had something similar but half that size, it held matches, sort of waterproof.

Google has a few pics of Gill floats, this is one of aluminum ones from the 30's. You may be right, similar in appearance.

Look like net corks to me, just can't imagine brass though, would be awful expensive to outfit with brass corks. I have seen wood, cork, plastic and aluminium like the ones shown.

The aluminum ones as shown can still be purchased today. We find a few every spring washed up on the shores here.

A family friend gave me an old tackle box several years ago that belonged to her father. The man passed in the 60's, and I was told he was an avid fisherman. I went through the box after seeing this thread and found these 2 old flat fish and the other (I cannot recall name). All 3 are made of wood, so I'm assuming they would be relatively old? Any ideas?

Managed to get my Grandfathers stuff that I think contained some of my Great Grandfathers tackle in an old christmas card box in the bottom of his tackle box. All proudly displayed in the mancave now. Attachment 39850Attachment 39851 The spinner baits are made by a now out of business company around 1910.

Nicely done...I wish I had thought to keep more of the stuff I found in my Dad's box. Your way of displaying them is really neat.

The top two are flatfish, and the other is a chugger, a top water bait. Believe all three are made by Heddon.

Thanks Mikepal...those are his fishing rods that they are hanging from as well, old leadcore setup for lake trout trolling in the kawarthas, and the smaller all-metal rod was his trolling rod, perfect length for trolling out the back of the boat in the tinnie, allowing others to fish/troll off the sides

The flatfish used to have 2 double hook hangers. All these are now for display.

I stand corrected, the original Flatfish was produced , manufactured by Worden's, with the lure being designed by Charlie Helin... as mentioned by kickingfrog...

Yea those have a few years on them. Interesting that the basic design of most of these old lures are still used today. I like that bubble bee fly !!

I also have a box full of these older baits.

A lure I didnt see post was the older beno lure . I used it many years ago for chits and giggles and it got many pike to bite.

Still looking for some of them as I lost the only one I had.

It's not as old as the others but still hard to find as ive been looking for another .

It had like 3 or 4 joints in it so the moment was spectacular.

I'm not sure where my dad's beno ended up but I've got some that are only 20-25 years old and are still in an active box. I'll see if I can dig them up.

Walleye and pike nailed them lol.
Had 2 of them but lost the last one walleye fishing a few years back. Knew I shouldn't of tossed it in the river but it's what was working lol. Now I just resort to plastics only no lures to many rocks to much money lost due to snags on the bottom. With the plastic it's ok to loose a dozen jig heads in an evening. New soft plastics are softer these days too the fish tend to tear them up good. Went through 3 or 4 bags of plastics last year on the 3 evenings I went . But the fishing was fantastic so I cant really complain [emoji1787]

That looks a lot like how I remember my dad's tackle box looking. My eyes go right to the River Runts, Flatfish and Pikies.

I found my Benos but can’t find my dad’s. One was a green frog pattern with black dots and I want to say the others were orange with black dots and maybe yellow with multi coloured dots but I could be mixing those last 2 with ones my older cousin had. I never worried too much about losing a few jigs every evening but I sure pouted and whined when the Sampo swivels were lost too.
I used to use the flatfish with double gangs of trebles (4 trebles) but one or two pike swallowing them put a quick end to that practice.
