Covid 19 testing how does it work?

This is just a curiosity question....Something I have been trying to figure out (understand).....
How does it work...
I mean they want to test 9.000 people or more a day. How do they get the 9,000 different people tested each day. Does the healthcare system go out seek these people out. Or do the 9,000 different people walk into a testing centre each day (no idea where those are located) or is there a van with a testing equipment going around the town each day? How or where do these 9,000 people come from each day.
Personally I know of no-one that has been tested or been asked to be tested..... Anyway, just a mindless question....Yes I am bored...

There was a list of sites in our area published where you could be tested. You have to go on line first to see if you qualify. It is usually at local hospitals. You could probably find the information from your local board of health or health unit.. I’s sure a google search can find it for your area. From a google search

They would be turned away.
The test site are not open for anybody to request a test.
Must be recommended to the test site.

The last I heard it takes 1 or 2 days to get results.

So they are recommending, reaching out to more than 9,000 different people a day to be tested?

Around here there is a number to call if you suspect you might have Covid. A dedicated test ambulance was to come to where you were and do what was needed. You were not to go to the hospital if you had the symptoms unless you could no longer breathe well.

Given human nature, everyone with the sniffles started calling in and overwhelmed the test crew. I don't know if it's even in operation as tests are to be for people who could cause the bug to spread, if someone has it and they are sitting at home a positive test is a wasted test.

It’s weird how some people havent been touched by Covid such as yourself Fatri, and others have. In our extended family it’s touched 3 people in different degree’s and ways.
I still have one Uncle I’m worried about. He was moved from Ross Memorial at the start to an LTC. Thank god it wasn’t Pinecrest in Bobcaygeon.

Fatri, if we have 1,000 hospitals in Ontario ( no idea the actual number) they just have to test an average of 9-10 each per day. What I dont understand is why some places can get results in 2-3 days, others are taking up to two weeks.

The testing is kind of a joke at best. When the so called testing first started coming to your door unless you answered every question to their satisfaction they turned you down and told you to just stay home for 2-3 weeks. My wife has a family member working at the assessment clinic at our local hospital and we have been told the same, unless you meet all the criteria they are just sending people back home. She tells us daily most of the people being screened are not being tested. They are just telling the people the same to go home and stay home.

I wonder how they get correct results from doing it this way. How do they control the spread this way? Just tell everyone that catches a cold to stay home for 2 weeks?

Without having test available and ready for everyone there is no way to put a hold on this virus. So the 20 percent who shows no symptoms continue to spead it around. Another 20 percent are not being tested because they're symptoms are not serious or do not match the test criteria.

So know there would be a minimum of 40 percent spreading it like fire because we wont test them. Seems kind of dumb to me when they want to investigate and to contact tracing each case. Then they only know some that are infected with the virus.

Our death toll doesn't add of for the infected cases puts us at a higher percentage death rates because they only test who they want.

How are we getting 150 dead and only 12 to 16 hundred cases a day?. When the hospitals are not even maxed out??. Ontario numbers should have a few thousand more cases than it does.

We need more test done plain and simple

What's going on at the retirement homes ?? Seems like many have died in the long term care home they reside in. Are they bringing ventilators in to help them ? What's being done to protect our elders in these homes? Seems many are dying not in the hospital but in these homes. I understand they cant sent 30 patients from a long term care facilities to the hospital so what are our doctors doing to help and protect all these people. ?

I love the fact that they're confident enough to proclaim that we're "past the peak" in Ontario, yet not even 2 weeks ago the alarm was raised over a severe lack of testing.

Not an expert, but if that's where testing was at less than 2 weeks ago, I'd say they don't have enough data to be making claims like that. But it's what people want to hear so it's news.

We are not over our peak yet in Ontario
Maybe some of the other provinces are but Ontario and Quebec no.

Maybe they can drop the peek if they drop number of test ,test less and pass the curve lol. . Personally I'd like to see every single Canadian tested no ifs and buts about it. Test as much as they can.

I'm guessing that's the plan, less testing means less confirmed cases to crest the peak and flatten the curve on paper. Possibly our government is considering giving up the fight of the spread to bring back the economy. Seems the attempts made to contain the spread has failed miserably because of the delay in our federal government to take actions months ago when needed were ignored. Even worse the actions Trudeau was telling us his government was taking were not actually happening at all with international travellers. Weeks prior our so called leader had his wife and kids living it up in the UK getting his wife sick because of his own personal greed. Then returned home to hiding out telling us all to do our part and stay home while he took his family and his cavalry to his cottage for an Easter weekend away. Do as I say, not as I do, great leadership qualities we have in this country. As far as the testing go's you can throw the numbers out the window they dont mean squat

That "past the peak" declaration is DEFINITELY way too premature ... it can change in 1 day. There are many days when the US new cases dropped consecutively and then they all of a sudden pumped out a new record daily infection rate.

People get symptoms ... they either call, fill in a survey or go to a test center. They are asked questions, if they do not have sufficient symptoms or risk (have you traveled in past 14 days, were you exposed to anyone that got COVID), they are turned away .... and only those that do have sufficient indicators are subjected to the test. Mostly this is started by the individual that feels they might have it.

I am not sure if they automatically test anyone in close vicinity to those that are COVID positive ...

Still 37 days after wuhan went into lockdown and the start of a 10 day hospital build. 27 days after the hospital was built Our government insisted it would not shut down travel from China. Our health experts know everything you know.
They are some of the smartest we have that know nothing lol. We listen to our world health organization experts doctors that ar not even doctors but experts at covering these situations up.

Airlines counting to travel for 55 to 60 days to many hotspots after China went into lockdown. Our government has been horrible to listen to they have taken nothing serious to any of the early warnings.

We have the experts saying 37 days after wuhan lockdown they have the experts to track this disease. So I guess there are more than 9,000 people a day (everyday-Monday to Sunday) that want to get tested but not enough tests to get them all tested?

9,000 and more each day, every day seems like a lot of people wanting/needing to be tested..... I just don't know where these people are coming from...Just can't seem to wrap my head around it.... I just don't see it, (line ups) it might be because I am stuck here in my home :silly:

And IMO, everyone that want's to venture out in the community, whether it to be for work or pleasure should be tested....

We are lacking testing and we cant properly reopen with out proper testing.

Ontario is the worst of them all yet we have so many cases but lag in test. Our testing slacks and it's been said for weeks. Still not even 9000 thousand test on Sunday. Yet they want to ramp it up 16 thousand by may 5th.

Well, I can only guess ... but yes, it implies more people than who are tested show up, are screened, lots rejected, and then only a subset tested. But I don't know where 9000 tests a day comes from ... I heard that is our theoretical capacity, but I also heard at one point they were only doing around 1400 a day because of certain constraints (limited supplies, etc). Was there an announcement confirming they are testing 9000 a day?

Testing.

Simple, depending on the LHIN, and the Public Health service, they set up "testing centers" designed to bring you in, administer the swab under optimal conditions, then send that swab away to the lab to be tested. All hospitals are set up for testing, and many municipalities have mobile testing as well, where a PRU unit with Paramedics will simply drive out and administer the swab, and send it off as well.

Testing times? Totally dependent on risk tolerance. Someone presenting symptoms, who has been socially distancing, and not exposing others, low risk. Health care professional, who not only works in the blast furnace right now, but presents a real issue should they be sidelined, high risk, and gets a priority.

My fiancee worked in a paramedic team on Sat, by end of shift Sat night, her partner was feverish....so got swabbed, results back by 2100 Sunday night.

Remember, most labs have been re-tasked to give Covid-19 testing a priority. The only thing being done other than it is testing for other urgent health issues. With all non urgent procedures etc being put on the back burner, this has freed up some of those resources.

As far as the peak?

It depends. Typically it will consider peaked when no new cases are identified, or when the number of new cases per day starts to decline. Yes, ironically this also goes hand in hand with testing, and that particular lag. However, for example in Renfrew County...no new cases identified today, if that trend continues, then yes, it is considered to have "peaked".

Pinecrest in Bobcaygeon blew up big. Some believe a daughter went to see her parent in early/mid March. But the biggest problem is the lack of PSWs. Many are contract, and they usually work at more than 1 establishment, sometimes 3. Most figure that’s how/why it’s spreading in them. All it takes is 1 asymptomatic PSW and 2 or 3 LTCs are done. Ripe breeding grounds.

My Aunt who is positive is at Eatonville, she’s 83. Last I checked there were 30+ deaths there. All I know is she’s still inside. So no, most are not being transferred. I don’t know what protocols they have in place for containment inside them.

Can tell you, my daughter was is a medical facility. They discharged someone on March 23rd. Who tested positive. My guess is authorities traced that person back. I think it was the 26th. The ward she was in went into to total lockdown/quarantine. She was locked in her room for 23 hours a day. There’s stuff I won’t relay but suffice to say, it wasn’t good. Nor was trying to get her to understand she was in the safest place she could be. Totally locked away from the world. We eventually got her out but it wasn’t easy, and by the time we got her out, it had spread inside. So most likely the staff. Nor was finding a place she could go, where there weren’t other high risk people. Her 14 days is just ending.

My cousins mother is I’m assuming in the same predicament my daughter was. Locked in a room, knowing she’s likely slowly dieing. Worse than drowning imo.

In recent days, the province has ramped up its testing with 9,330 being conducted between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

How about we all get tested before we head out into the community and receive a green wrist ban for good and red for bad.....

I already got into it with some woman on FB who said that if they come up with a vaccine, she wasn't going to inoculate her kids or herself......

I basically told her that I would personally call her employer ( she's a PSW), and her kids school, to inform them of the danger to public health she represented.

The number of morons who still act like it's some kind of conspiracy, because they don't know anyone who got sick.....Yeah....I only know one person who ever had polio too, but it's enough to scare the cR@p out of me.....

You may have been green the day you were tested but got infected the next day.
Or the opposite where you have been positive and fully recovered and built up anti-bodies.

Ya, I know, I was thinking about that after I wrote it...... I guess, ideally if everyone in the world got tested at the same time but that`s not a reality.... Still find it hard to believe that there are more than 9,000 people wanting or should I say needing to be tested everyday (Monday to Sunday).... Sounds like a lot of sick people out there....

The countries that seem to be doing well, are testing fr more.

If I could have gotten my daughter tested. I’d have felt better about getting her out. The first 3 choices for relocation. Are all high risk houses.

My fiancé’s BIL. Same deal. If the kids were Negative they could have gone to stay with grandparents. Instead while dad was locked in a spare room. They were still in the house. And he does have to eat at some point.

I imagine though, the biggest benefit is identifying the asymptomatic people. So instead of continuing to work and spreading it to 5-10-20..

OK thanks for that info ... based on what I read there ... it seems that the +9000 tests was due to a backlog ... see it ramped down to 5500 outstanding? It was taking 2 to 3 days to get a result ... so for sure there was a backlog which they may have now cleared or at least reduced to 24h. That means the capacity is +9000 per day, but I don't think that many people are on average being actually tested each day. Sounds like 5000 is probably a better estimate (although we can only guess unless we see the daily average in the next say 1 to 2 weeks, to get a view in an unconstrained environment).
