Any tips?

I'm heading out Saturday morning for my first ever turkey sit. I know there's birds around, but have never hunted them. Any quick tips are appreciated. My plan is...get near the roosting area before sunrise, put out a hen decoy and wait? Lol. I have a blind, is it worth putting out for a one day sit? Or just camo and a natural ground blind? Got a 12g pump, 2 3/4 3's or 4's and a decoy. Either way, I'm excited to at least have a chance, and just be in the woods. I have a mouth call, but not sure I'm good enough to even use. Any tips are appreciated...thx gents.

Only aloud to use 4s,5s,6s,7s either size is good. If you know where there roosting try to get in as close as you can without being notice. A blind is good if you move a lot but depending on how close your planning on getting I would try to make as little noise as possible . Hen decoy is good or no decoy if you know how to call. Whoa, you still have time to change you mind, and not start down this path of sleep deprived gobble gobble lunacy! Just go to the grocery store and buy a turkey before it’s too late for you also....

Seriously, if you know where they roost, you are in for one of huntings most magical experiences. Get in early, we’ll before legal light while it is still black dark. Set up so the sun doesn’t rise in your face. Be super quiet. Listen to the woods wake up. Listen for gobbles. They may not start right away, so listen for train whistles, planes flying over, the first crow caw or blue jay caw, as they will often gobble in response. Same as the first honkers that fly over.
LEt him gobble. And gobble. I’ve had them gobble 75 times or more before they fly down. Don’t move, he’s looking around from the roost. If no hens Yelp, and it’s starting to get light, make a yelp or two. If he answers, stop calling and wait. He knows you’re there. If no gobbling, wait until the sun is up enough that all the pinky orange is out of the sky, then call some. Don’t move, watch and listen. You can often hear them fly down. Let them come in. Get your gun up early, and no fast motion if they can see you, wait for them to go behind a tree if you have to adjust. Aim for the base of the neck where the feathers start. Bang, snip tag, take many pics, and post your story here!

Just be careful with movement, they are really, really good at detecting the slightest movement.... One other tip, just because you can't see them doesn't mean they can't see you, so watch your movement when you are calling, I have been busted many times by not noticing a bird during my calling sequence. Lots of times they do come in quietly so don't move :)

All good advice so far. If I may add when it comes to calling, pay close attention to the cadence of your calling. I have seen many first timers call too quickly. By that I mean they put their yelps too close together or too fast. Find some vids of real turkeys calling and try to emulate the speed of the call. Don't worry too much if you think the actual sound is off, I have heard Hens that sound sweet and others that sound like they have a sore throat. Cadence is king. Thanks Daniel, appreciate it. I've been listening to lotsa calls, and I didnt think about speed really...but I will now, thx.

Sometimes imperfect calling is better than no calling. All you need to do is make something sound hen-turkey like, just enough so the Tom knows you're there. Even if he doesn't respond or come your way immediately, he might come back to check things out later. Live hens themselves are the worst sounding callers in the woods! Not that there isn't merit in good calling, it can make the ultimate difference, but you can still be successful on amateurish calling. I'm still a terrible caller. A good property is more than half of it, and it sounds like you've got that part already.

Be patient. So many times I've stood up to move or look or even head home and that Tom was just out of sight until I stood up and got busted.
