Do hunters has a preference in case of Moose
Bull Or Cow Preferred ...?
Do you mean as table fare or the actual hunting aspect?
The allure of a trophy bull is nice but I was always the one in the group advocating for targeting whichever sex gave us our best chance at drawing an adult tag. I lost the vote every time to the guys that wanted to bring the big rack home.
Chances being equal, I would prefer to hunt a for a bull.

I call, so we prefer a bull....rack size doesn’t matter !!
It doesn't matter, anymore, for our crew. I just got off a skype conference. For us,this year's hunt is officially a wash. Our older hunters are all high risk. The consensus is the risk will still be just too great. We'll wait until the new system kicks in next year.
I do not denied it I am a Meat hunter and can't except the rack hunters philosophy ...
Some hunters always want to walk the woods with the hunter who has a Bull tag in his pocket .....
Year after year .... and that's is unacceptable ...
I chose the area and sex, where the smaller group size require,
and a guaranteed Getting.... the tag.... For.... The.... GROUP ....
Psychology is very interesting .....
Different strokes for different folks. It may be unacceptable to you, but,to others,it's not. One thing that's certain is we can NOT condemn the traditions and morals of others. Think it all you like, but, keep your thoughts to yourself. When we condemn others on a public forum,it's important to remember that "wedge issues" such as this fuel the fire of the anti-hunters/gunners who absolutely delight in divide and conquer politics.
As long as they're hunting legally, nothing else matters.
Why is it unacceptable when you have drawn a bull tag to hunt a bull?
I only hunt deer with a buck tag, is that unacceptable as well? Rack or no rack some hunters prefer to leave the females to reproduce. It's either a personal choice or luck of a draw for some. I'm a meat hunter as well and dont ever apply for doe tag, it's my choice and I dont care what others think
Bull not taking in tag allocation.
Generally a bull is bigger (more meat) and yet to have one that didn't taste great. And no hunting experience tops calling in a bull.
I agree with you ,
but hunters complain that they can't get a MOOSE Tag
Well the Cow Moose is a MOOSE ... And is an opportunity to hunt Moose
I don't want to start a conflict or offend anybody on this forum ,
just to point out that lot of Moose hunting opportunity has been lost in the past
over a Bull... or Cow ..... choice ...!
And lot off feathers get raffle over this in the hunting groups .....
Which is also can be good , for shaking up the group , and forming or reorganizing new groups .
Some random thoughts: bulls are usually sought after because they can be reasonably called during the rut. Calling cows can be done but it’s entirely different.
Secondly, the hunting fraternity grants special status to successful hunters who shoot bulls, especially large bulls because there are fewer of them. I’m not sure this status has a place in modern sport hunting or not. IMO status should coincide with the difficulty of the hunt and fairness of the kill.
Many hunters prefer eating cow moose as bulls can be tough and gamey.
Some hunters are uncomfortable shooting cows because of impacts to the future moose population.
With respect to wedge issues, I think hunters have the responsibility to continually review hunting as a whole and voluntarily make changes, or propose changes, before government imposes change on its own. Sticking your head in the sand carries risk.
I have only hunted with a group for the last 5 years, and we have never seen a cow moose yet in our area .
But get a bull every year ,and usually see more bulls.
I don't understand why, except for lack of a lake or marsh for cow and calf to feel secure.
Our group ended this year, at least for me too many drugs, and booze for me.
Two of us decided we would go it alone , if we can draw a tag that is.
I think whatever opourtunity allows for everyone to get excited and head up to camp and share That time with your northern family. Card games, drinks, maybe a movie if you have it. Remember why we hunt. If you get a bull great if you get a cow great. Just be greatful that you get another chance to head to moose camp with the boys and girls if there are.
We are applying to a new area this year WMU 19 due to the guaranteed group size and will be applying for a bull, but as trimmer mentioned that his group is not going. For us it will all depend on how the Covid-19 situation is. We are not going until mid Nov, if we go.
Thanks , hope we will see game , I am happy with that too ...
This year is going to be different arrangement ...
Before we was asking others in the group to come ...
Not any more ... if they are not motivated ....
And this year we have 2 guaranteed group for Cow ... Tag ...
Group is smaller ... but more dedicated ...
No hard feeling ... either ...
I'm not picky about what I shoot but as far as hunting goes I prefer to hunt bull. Mostly because I use a compound bow and they are easier to call in and much more exciting to hear them grunt. Although I did have a cow come in balling away which was pretty cool. No cow tag though. Only 3 of us in our group so we apply for bull every year and hope for an additional cow. Deer or moose I normally shoot the first legal animal that comes within range.... can't eat the horns!! I have made the personal choice however to never shoot a cow with a calf. That's just my personal choice and not a political stanse
We prefer a cow because draw chance is greater and were we hunt we usualy see cows every year...bulls too but we rather not take a chance in the draw if we have a better shot at a cow tag
Hope this helps!
We are going individual this year as we never have enough guys to guarantee a tag anyway. Told the guys to put in for whatever they want but wondered why I didn't put in for a bull for my first choice. I would love a chance at a bull but reality is I prefer a 15% chance at a cow tag over a 2% chance at a bull. I did however put in for archery bull for 2nd choice as they separated the archery and rifle tags in our WMU this year.
Bull. Cow it doesnt matter in our group, whatever our best chance was to get a tag, that is what we applied for!
And in most years we were lucky.
Our group goes for best success rate draw as well.
Every year I've gone moose hunting we've only had cow n calf tags. I've shot 2 cows and 2 calves and all 4 times I was pissed they came out to me. I dont want to shoot cows n calves. I'm getting soft in my old age but I wont shoot anymore LOL.
If I ever go again, It will be bull only and have to be a good one for me to shoot. Loosing interest in big game in Ontario, waterfowl, small game way more fun, and closer to home.
