Wow, that looks like it took a strole in someone's backyard. Happy it was on camera and not a story of someone meeting up face to face with it
Awesome. Great picture
Timmins is far enough north that it is possible and the size is about right (they ain't small). Would be nice to have proof they are up there.
It’s my understanding that the MNR doesn’t dispute the presence of cougars in Ontario. They are interested if the cougars are residents as opposed to being escapees or wandered into the province from elsewhere. According to genetic testing, a dead cougar found near Thunder Bay a few years ago was from Nebraska.
Not so sure the pic was taken in Ontario or at least google search doesn't show it being from here...................
Lots of talk about it being in Alberta...
Cool pic either way...
Well Sam,this does matter a lot:confused::ashamed:(no offence meant with this to you...)to find out,if the cougar is native or just wondered in from somewhere.:silly:
Like that does not happen EVER in the Nature........ooops ,i forgot the coyote........Hmmm,why we do not spend few million dollars to find that out.If it turns out they are not native by DNA,lets get rid of them(before coyotes get rid of deer-turkey-groundhog...You name it):ashamed:
Pretty much the same as every other cougar trail cam pic out there lol. Always a friend of a friend took this lol
I dont have any doubts there are Cougars in Ontario, But until I see a dead one or one in person I'm not believing any trail cam pics lol
I know a guy that swears he was shooting at one about 20 years ago as it was chasing his pony. Hes a really good shot and good hunter so I'm not sure if he was dreaming or what lol

Yup, I heard the story of one between Baxter and Angus about 8-9 years ago, owner saw the cat swipe the rear of the horses cheek and left some pretty bad claw marks. Later seen on the Base several times by different people that know their wildlife. Not one of these "it's a bear when it turns out to be a dirty xxl coon".
Where we deer hunt in the Gravenhurst area about 8 years ago we were doing a deer drive and the blockers stated shooting as we got closer so usually we doggers get to a high point to look for deer running back in our direction and I see this brownish aniaml running in my direction so I put up the gun and look thru scope only to see a big body small head and long tail and realized it was a cougar streaking by me. The week after it was spotted in a school yard in Bracebridge. Not only did I see it but 3 others in our group saw it and we reported it to the MNR and they went looking for it and it made the Barrie news the week after we saw it.
Found someone on a hunting app I use say someone from Alabama got this on their camera lol...the legend continues Attachment 40412
I have seen a wild cougar in Ontario.
Have heard a few stories over the years including one of my bosses that said he swore saw a puma just down the rd from me . He is a snow bird and says that he sees them all time in Florida.
I seen it the same year as he did just just the opposite way a few kms . The deer population has not been the same since on this particular peice of land . Was very common to see a dozen deer were I spotted the big cat to far for a clean camara phone picture.
I am believer as I have seen it in the wild.
I didnt call the ministry but I did try and contact the property owner to go on the land and look for the tracks. We had a heavy rain later so I didn't bother looking into it as the tracks would of been erased by the big rain.
Cougars are in Ontario. No doubt about it.

I have a friend who has a 2nd cousin that has a great Uncle who's best friend knows a fella that has a niece who saw a cougar.
Show me juvenile cougars on trail camera and I'll believe in a population. This from someone who has seen a cougar in the bush North of Bobcaygeon. I believe it was a cougar, I just don't believe it's native to the area.

Turkey's were native...they were re-introduced...
Don't know about cougar, they've been around a long time in other provinces, they must have migrated to Norther Ont a long time ago. They are on the endangered species list for Ont :
Quote:
Status
Endangered
“Endangered” means the species lives in the wild in Ontario but is facing imminent extinction or extirpation.
Date added to the Species at Risk in Ontario List
The Mountain lion (Cougar) was already assessed as endangered when the Endangered Species Act took effect in 2008.
Bet I've had 10 people tell me over the years that ministry released Cougars to control coyote population. Who dreams up these rumours? Lol
I hope to see a cougar one day, Just hope it's not hunting me when I do ha.

I worded that last post poorly. You're right, the Eastern Cougar is native to the area, just extirpated.

I figured that cougar I saw was an escapee, not a resident.
