Topping up the mineral/salt deposits

I was out yesterday to take my portable turkey blinds down and move the chairs back to the permanent deer box blinds and I saw some of the mineral deposits were hit pretty hard. Looks like next weekend I will be back out to re-stocking the salt licks and mineral deposits.

Not sure what you are finding works well but Deer Cane seems to work very well for us. We clear a 6' section of ground and take a little of material away so that just a little water will pool. Spread the 4lb bag around the area and then pour 3-4 gallons of water over it. For salt blocks we find that the 50lb trace mineral block (the brown one) works the best for us. We clear a small 4' section of ground and place the block in the middle.

They’ll hit a $3.00 dollar bag of road salt just as hard as any of the fancy stuff this time of year

I use the brown blocks and replenish every spring. I like to bury them with only the tops showing.

I mix the Deer Cane in a bucket then pour it in a low area. Every animal loves it, I think I have pictures of every animal living in the forest stopping for a lick. I also put block salt, stock salt, and whatever salt is on special.

How much do you dilute it? After I spread it I am just putting enough water on top to start dissolving it.........I like your idea of mixing it then pouring it.

I follow the directions on the bag, I think you mix Deer Cane with 6 gal of water then pour it on cleared and loosened soil area. It reacts to the water, the liquid gets super hot.

3 bucks a bag for salt ! Tell me where ? LoL ! I use to use road salt but now just buy an extra bag of water softener salt and pour some on top of stumps. They come and scrape around the stump and lick up the dirt . I was told it's important right now because the Does need it for lactation and the Bucks for their antlers. Read somewhere about a formula for deer licks involving salt / dicalcium phosphate ( 2 to 1 ) ?

I've used this salt from the Livestock feed store (also available at TSC)...works well dissolving into the dirt...

Someone also mentioned using the smaller salt bricks and drilling a hole through them and either running a screw through it into a tree (to keep it off the ground) or running a rope through it and hang it a couple of feet off the ground

and put a big nail through,
and put metal cover on top of it .

The feed stores sell a hanger for those salt licks...designed to mount in a horse stall. The work great mounted to a tree.

They also sell 50lbs bags of loose minerals....the powdered versions of the blocks. At $15 a heck of a better deal and all you are have to do is pour it over dirt or in a hole and once it gets wet it's perfect for deer.
