Dipsy diver problem

I need an advise from those who have experience with Dipsy Divers.
I recently got a Dipsy Diver #1 with 'O' ring.
As I wonted to run it as far as possible on the right of my boat I set the base plate at 3.
So, the first issue is that I don't see any difference to pull it out with clip on or off, it is the same and very hard. I did not get any fish on the diver this first time, but it seems impossible to get out the diver and the fish together...
The second issue is even worse. The lines from the ends of the Diver become twisted all the time. As the result the clip is not released and I'm pulling out the Diver with lines twisting over...
Any suggestion will be much appreciated.

With respect to the line twist,
you have to let them out under tension. If you just let them out free-spool, they will twist. Your other issue, are you saying they don’t release when you hook up ? If so, adjust the tension on the release. Are you using snubbers ??

Not completely sure what you are asking.
Have you adjusted the release setting and tested boat side before using?
For the twisting are you using swivel's?

Yes, correct, I just watched some videos and found out that I should release the line under tension while I just let it go. That was creating twisting. So, the second issue seems to be resolved.
I do not use any snubbers.
The first issue is that the tension from Dipsy seems to be very high. It takes me a lot of efforts and time to get it out of the water.
The clip releases well, I checked it right near the boat. But what I was saying is that even with clip released the drug is to high and I actually don't see any difference between clip on and clip released. The Diver is still going under angle and creating a lot of drag.

Are you running mono or braid to the dipsy? Mono will stretch so much it is almost impossible to pop the diver to reel it in, braid just a quick flip and it will release. You will want a snubber if you run braid to take the shock of the fish fighting.

I'm running braid. The clip release working well, but what I'm trying to say is that I don't see any difference between pulling dipsy with release on or off.
Is that because I set the base plate at 3, so that the dipsy still has much resistance even with clip released?
The problem is that even with clip released the dipsy is going back very hard and if I would get a fish on it I just don't know how I will get dipsy and fish to the boat...

Are you using a dipsey rod and heavy enough reel ??
Dipseys pull harder than other divers. The setting shouldn’t make that much difference...I think you just need some experience using them. It sounds like you are setting them up correctly...providing your equipment is heavy enough.

Yes, I'm using medium-heavy rod and heavy reel. What I'm thinking now is that my rod is too long: 9'6''. I chose the longest one because I thought that it would allow me better maneuvering with the fish near the boat but now I realized that it also has a bigger leverage and as such heavier drug.

Rod length is not the issue. I run four dipsy rod at a time with my high and wide divers longer rods then what you are using.

If you are struggling to retrieve them either they have not released the trip mechanism or your reels ratio is way off for what you are trying to reel in.

Are they " high speed" reels by any chance?

I don't think this is a reel issue. Even to drug the dipsy with the rod itself, without reeling is quite hard.... it's like pulling a very big fish... So I'm thinking that if I get a fish I would not be able to pull it at all...

OK, first issue is on number 3 setting, there is so much "slip" that with or without the ring, it isn't THAT much difference. Basically when you go to a number 3 setting, you are positioning the dipsey so a lot of the water just glides over it, instead of it "biting" into the water ... so you are basically reducing drag. You want the smaller dipseys (without rings) to be the ones that go out far to the side. The larger dipseys (with rings or mag size) are going to be your deeper and closer to the boat divers.

Second issue almost certainly has to do with how fast you are letting out your divers. You have to go SLOW!! If not you can actually get the reel spooling out to fast, and the line that clips onto the dipsey gets behind the it, and then when you stop spooling, it loops over the swivel arm, and you're done. Slow ... it should be under constant pressure ... never should you see the rod tip loose and free, should always have a bend in the rod, and tension on the line. Always, and especially when you are in waves ... that's even worse.

Yes, the second issue was resolved right away. I now know that I should release the line under pressure.
The first issue. You are saying that to keep the dipsy far side from the boat I would need smaller size dipsy or dipsy without 'O' ring? I thought right opposite... I thought that with ring dipsy will go deeper and on the side as well with shorter line out... I was wrong?...

The #s on the divers set the direction of pull and the pitch of dive.

You can change a dipsy from port to starboard depending on which way you position the weight. A #1 setting will dive more but will not work out to the side as far as a #3 setting.

When running 2 per side of the boat. I like a 1 or 1.5 setting for my rod closest to my rigger. Which is a shorter dipsy rod then my next diver rod which is longer and the diver set to #3

In terms of lure placement in the water column depth wise and moving out away from boat. My riggers are my deepest rods. Then the dipsy on a #1 would be slightly higher and farther to the side. Then the dipsy on a #3 setting would be higher and farther away again.

how would you set your dispey's if it as just two rods and no riggers?

The point is you will NEVER get deep with any dipsey set at 3 ... there's too much slippage. So those dipsies will always be set to run at shallower levels, likely where the water is around 50F/52F ... sure you can get deeper, but look at the dive curves, and you'll see you need to let out A LOT of line to gain any depth, up to a point, then it won't go deeper, even with a mag ring (it helps but not that much). If you want depth, you need to live with your dipsey set at 1 to max 1.5 setting. Those will have much steeper dive curves, as you know.

What we normally do is use mag dipseys or dipseys with the O ring on the inside lines set at 1, then we use the standard dipseys for outside lines set at 2.5 or 3.

What kind of lure do you use behind dipsy? Should it be only lite lure (lite spoons) or we can use plugs and other water resistant stuff? Can I use divers, like diving wobblers etc? Diving lures could also give some additional depths. Would it work?

Probably the most popular combination behind a dipsey is a spin doctor and fly ... and once you get into that, there's so many colors, it will make your head spin.

Some people use paddles and meat. That works too.

Anyhow research spin doctors and also something like A-TOM-MIK flies. Start with green stuff, with some glow in it.

Question about spin doctor. Is it used mostly with divers or with donriggers as well? What I see, most people use spoons on downriigers....
