How many CC's for a snowblower

So I have a 30 year old Craftsman snowblower it's 10 HP. These day's they only give you the CC's of the engine and there seems to be know conversion for HP. Does anyone know how CC's I should get?? I was looking at a 300 CC or even go to the 338 CC's.

My old 10 HP use to go through anything at full speed. The 300 CC's is the forth biggest they have at Canadian Tire. Pretty much need to buy at Canadian Tire since I have 600 bucks in Canadian Tire money.

Anybody else have a new one of similar size in the Ottawa area or farther North? Will it go through the deep wet stuff?

CC's is a measurement of engine size whereas HP is a measurement of power. AFAIK,there's no way to convert it without getting a headache. I've seen the Can Tire snowblowers and I'm pretty sure that they're 8 HP. With $600 in Can Tire money,I'd throw a couple of hundred more in the pot and go big.

Go big or go home. 3 stage 400cc, I could launch snow out of my laneway, Over the neighbours house into his backyard if I wanted to lol (In town)

SD, is 3 stage really worth it? Seems like a gimmick to me but I've never used one so don't know how they are. My first concern is the drive train is now more complex and that usually means something else to go wrong.

My current one is only two stage I bought it from a friend 10 years ago in mint condition. But I push this thing hard. It would go through the deepest wet snow on full speed and it would just go through it. It's slowing down now needs to many repairs and I don't feel like fixing it.

The 338 CC is 1100.00 no frills that's the third largest that Canadian Tire has.

I just don't know anything about the engines they use, they are not Briggs or Tecumseh.
This snow blower has a Champion engine.

I’d buy a no-name Chinese Honda clone before I’d own another Champion, they’re basically the same thing but you’re paying more for an English name on the box

338 cc will be about a 7 hp engine. You can look on the EPA emissions certification database and get a bunch of information on various small spark-ignition engines. There aren't too many 338 cc models, so it is relatively easy to figure out which one you are talking about.

I think I have the same old Craftsman snowblower you have. Mine is getting near the end, but it is good enough for now.

Most of the brands you’ll find are all made by MTD, including Cub Cadet, White, etc and I think I remember that they use Powermore engines - Chinese.

I bought a 27” Craftsman with a 305cc Briggs engine, it will go through quite a bit. The Briggs engine was a big part of why I bought it, and it also ended up being a downfall. The Briggs engines have two yellow plastic plugs at the bottom of the crankcase - I am not sure why because there is a separate drain plug for the engine oil. Christmas morning a few years back, I fired it up and got partway finished the driveway and I started to see a lot of smoke....? Looked down and saw that one of those plugs had worked itself out and I had lost all the oil. I shut it down right away but the damage was done, wished I had left it idling low and grabbed whatever oil I could find but I wasn’t thinking I guess. Later that winter we checked those yellow oil plugs on two of my neighbours blowers and they were also loose. Lesson learned.

I have an Ariens Platinum 24 SHO with 369cc. I wanted max power with the smallest bucket to ensure that the huge pile at the end of the driveway from the plow was easy to just walk through and not fight through like my older machine. I also don't need a bigger one because my driveway is not terrible large around 20' x 40'.

I would definitely recommend Ariens, my inlaws and parents have machines that are 15 years old and run perfect. Mine is about 4 years old and runs mint. Although I am particular about my machines, since the money I spent on it wasn't chump change. I take off the body parts and get inside and inspect belts, lube and adjust everything every year. I also always use synthetic oil in all my machines and only use non ethanol gas.

Take a look at the construction of whatever machine you get, some look good with a nice stats sheet then you see way to much plastic such as cheap plastic shoots.

Lastly I don't usually push for people (me included) to finance if you can't afford it but sometimes it's worth it to buy the right product once than get something that's cheap. Google Yard Card financing.

Forgot to ask, what’s wrong with your current one? Unless it’s totally rusted out I’d rebuild it and repower it before I’d buy a new one

I think the plastic chutes are better than metal. They don't rust and the snow doesn't stick to them as easily as it does to metal, especially when a bit rusted. Also less prone to freeze up after blowing damp snow.
One thing to do when your blower isn't tossing the snow like it used to is weld a strip of metal on the impeller blades as they do wear down. Just make sure they're closely balanced. I had mine done on an older blower and it gave me another 5 years or more service.

Ariens without a doubt, I still have my dads from circa 1968-9, 7HP 24 inch. And, I can still get parts for it.

I have done a little research on snowblowers and from what I have learned most all the big box stores sell Chinese made units that are built to last 2 or 3 years. The brand names most trusted appear to be Ariens and Honda from their dealerships.

A number of the small engine repair guys are now in the business of re building older units and basically putting in a new Honda engine sourced from the USA. They like the older frames and usually the engines have given up or been mistreated.

Older units with a Tecumseh engine appear to be pretty good usually branded as Snow King.

So it seems I am probably better off fixing my current one. Just needs the friction disc replaced.

If you can do the work yourself great, the next problem is if you cannot do it yourself is to find a small engine repair guy who is not off his rocker....

Its an easy job GW. First step is you tube videos on how its done.

Yeah I have an idea of how to do it. Just not as fun as fixing things to go fishing or hunting.

Starting to get tired of fixing things. I did the motor bike, paid someone to do the chainsaw, I still need to do the brakes on my car, but paid someone to do the wives car.

The current snowblower might make it one more season but she is getting long in the tooth,
but my Uncle also says the new big box stores stuff is crap as well .
I'm not exactly easy on equipment.

I have been hand shovelling both my own driveway and my neighbours for the past 5 years.I have never owned a snowblower and consider this a free gym workout. In reality right now in the GTA we are only getting about six big snow falls a year.

Is it worth it to invest $1500.00 in a decent snowblower that sits idle for most of the year and takes up storage space.

I am pretty sure you will repair that unit and save your money for something more essential.

I hate spending Money, but I clear about 2000 sq ft of driveway.

Try 3.5 km. Lol. That’s what I open to get to the camp. Not sure about this year, broke the 7’ Lucknow snowblower. Didn’t bother fixing it. More time to fish.

It will be if you're laid up in the hospital with tubes up your nose. Shovelling snow is one of the riskiest activities when it comes to heart attack.

That is because there is no way to convert it. The displacement of the engine has no bearing on the power at all, just ask a 350 V8 from 1957 vs a 350 V8 from 2003, identical displacement but no where close to the same power output, the block and head may be similar but the rest of the bits make a difference.

Yes thought about that, just fed up of spending all my time working to get there, last winter when snow blower broke, I would snowmobile in. I had lots of time to fish the rest of season, me likes that better. But it is nice to drive to camp door Friday night after work.

Well Sawbill I just got my Canada pension and have no problem running 10 k a day with my dog. So I think one could reverse what you said because if an individual worked out all our life they probably will not get that heart attack.

Hard work doesn’t cause heart attack, blocked arteries does.

tell that to Jim Fix...the godfather of jogging..died from a heart attack at 52 while on a jog near his home in Vermont.

And my dad, died shoveling the driveway trying to get out to go to church. Worked hard all his life in the outdoors.

The heart is a lot more complicated than you seem to understand. Check out all the hockey players in their 20s, high end players too, who have died or almost died during game play, I am sure those NHL guys had badly clogged arteries.

I was having heart palpitations,so,the Doc told me to stop with the 5 cups of coffee a day. He asked if I shovelled snow. I said "yep" because snowblowers cost a lot of money. He said "Really,at your age,what do you think your first heart attack is worth?" I bought a snowblower.

I come from a family of diabetics (I'm pre diabetic and just went on some pill), my whole family on both sides also have heart conditions.
So for me it's not if but just when. I now go have blood work done every 4 months probably for at least another year or 2.

GW a link to the guy I previously mentioned.Apparently re uses Tecumseh engines from the USA.There is load of info on snowblowers in his ad,s on KIJIJI.

I thought Tecumseh went out of business more than 10 years ago. Their small gas engines were almost identical to Briggs and Stratton and all I ever see anymore are the B&S engines.

I did a little research on this for you and the Tecumseh engines appear now to be made by the Lauson Engine Products still in the USA.

Must be sold under a different name now. Too bad Tecumseh went under as they had a decent small engine. Their Tillotson carbs were bullet proof and fool proof.

Yeah, I did but couldn't figure out if their Lauson small gas engine is a knock-off of the Tecumseh or a design of its own merit. I have to confess I'm not familiar with a Lauson brand. Seems many Tecumseh parts are interchangeable with it though.

From what I have learned it seems the company was just taken over and a name change,these engines were developed for cold weather and I suspect the exact same quality as the original,that is why my repair guy installs them in the bodies of well made older units that need a new engine.These unit's are pretty much bullet proof if you follow the simple instructions about storage and gas type.Typically always known as Snow King, be interesting if a small engine repair guy will comment on here.

I have had this HUSQVARNA ST 224 for about 5 years now. I only use it for front sidewalk and back patio areas. Works well and electric start system is nice on real cold days.
