So this will be my son's first year deer hunting and we have built our tree stands but I was just thinking maybe I should get him some sort of safety harness.
Personally I have never worn one, but then that's just me. What are others using for safety harness in tree stands.
I`ve never worn one. Don`t think they make one that`ll fit me. Lol. If you were local i`d give you one, likely 3 or 4 around here somewhere that came with my stands.
Trying to do some research can't really find how he would use it in a wooden tree stand. Do I tie a secure rope to the tree and then he connects the harness to it?
I'm a little way away from you but thank for the offer. It seems they are mostly for the metal stands.

Usually the harnesses that come with treestands have a harness and a tether that you attach to the tree each time you set-up. You can use this even with permanently installed treestands.
Do some googling on the Prusik Knot system. It's easier to watch a few videos than try to explain it.

Obviously you can do what you want but my suggestion is to both get one and lead by example and don’t ruin hunting for the rest of your sons life by letting him find you dead at the bottom of your tree
I rarely wear one - most of our stands are ladder stands and very sturdy. We still have two older peg/ TV antenna and strap-on stands that get dicey at times.
Prolly a good idea for any real heights You become very heavy very fast against gravity.
I borrowed a few fall arrest harnesses from my previous employer, but you can get them anywhere, get a new one not used. Never buy used safety equipment IMO.
Make him watch some fall arrest/tree safety videos too, pump the fear into him so he wants to wear one!
We just started this year using a safety line with prusik knot for getting in and out of the tree since statistically thats when most falls happen.

I bought one to try out since I'm used to the standard harness for work but can't imagine attempting a self rescue while in full panic. Even in fall arrest training they tell you that if you are overweight and the older you are, the higher the risk of a harness causing lasting damage after a fall.
So many things can go very wrong when you are up in a tree, it's really not worth fulling around with this. And I'm talking from m own experience here, it happened to me, & I was extremely lucky.
My advice is: do not play with this; do yourself & your family a huge favor: wear a safety harness all the time you go up a tree.
Also: have a plan on what to do after a fall happens, and you get suspended &possibly hurt in the process.

And don't forget you have to get out of the harness if you do fall while you are hanging in the air, and probably by yourself as well.
I don't remember the exact amount of time you have, but when circulation is cut off to your lower 1/2 by your weight in the harness, the blood rushing back to your extremities kills quite quickly after release from the harness due to a loss of blood pressure if I remember correctly. So have an escape plan in place as well.

I have fallen from one stand 15 years ago, I had sat cross legged in the stand for 4 hours and when I got up I could feel my legs were about to go and I was going over. I threw my crossbow away from me. When I went over I was out for a few minutes and later in the Month everyday around noonish I would start to get a migraine , turned out I had suffered a concussion. Back then I never use to tell anyone where I was. If I had been completely knocked out and injured my wife would have had no idea where I was.

I hunt alone for the most part. I quit climbing trees years ago. Not much chance of injury, falling out of my turkey lounger. I’ve shot all my deer from the ground .
I don't use a tree stand that doesn't have a ladder in front of it and a roll bar in front of where I'm sitting....it would take a concerted effort to fall out of it. HaHa...

I'm a fan of the HSS vest style harnesses. I tried a Muddy but the hardness of the material on that particular model i'd purchased made sound when i rubbed against it and that drove me nuts. Currently using an HSS Hybrid and i'm happy with it. Has tons of pockets. I hang & hunt every sit, so i rely on a good harness and linesman rope as i'm hanging my sticks and stand.

I use a safety vest with hang-on stands, but don't with the ladder / roll bar. I don't think you could fall out of it even if you tried. You'd need to be standing up to fall. I think I will build a fence around the whole stand so my son cannot fall out. It has a rail so he can rest the gun and won't be hard to add a fence around it.
Maybe put one around mine as well in case he ends up using it.
My kids lives are worth more to me than $100. My son that is hunting wears a harness. I can’t even imagine why this is a discussion: there has been many a dead guy found at the bottom of a tree stand.
I built a fence all the way around the stand as well as secured the ladder right to the tree he will have to be Houdini to fall out.
Haven't decided for myself, don't want to use any more wood.

There’s more danger than falling out of the stand. A part can break resulting in the stand collapsing from under you. I might be concerned about being trapped by a rail or a fence on the way down.
