New tires for truck - Suggestions

I am driving a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Night Edition and I am coming up to 2 years with the factory rubber and think it is time to get some all weather tires before the snow flies. Because of the 20" wheels snow tires will be very expensive and require alloy rims so someone suggested all weather tires (with the snowflake icon on the tire).

Due to COVID I do not think I will be driving much over the winter for work, and if we go on a road trip we usually drive my wife's RDX (has winter tires).

I have short listed these tire options:

- BG Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2
- Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac
- General Grabber A/TX All Terrain
- Bridgestone Dueler

Any suggestions or is there something that I overlooked?

One thing I wanted to suggest,

Our shop normally puts Michelins on our fleet but I got Wranglers last time. I asked why the change and the mechanic said he gets “take-offs” from tire shops CHEAP, ie $100/tire. This doesn’t help you with snow tires or all-weather tires, but if you could get some new tires cheap for good weather driving, maybe you want to buy some premium snows and only run them in the cold months.

I have Motormaster All Terrian W/T on my 1500 Sierra. I have another set of rims(17") with these on it but they make a 20".

Great tire i find. Although I've never had snow tires before, But I do a lot of field driving in the fall and winter, No maintained roads, muddy rough jobsites and I've neve been stuck. Pulled a 53' tractor trailer out of a snow bank one day last winter.


My buddy has K02s on his 1500 Sierra. He has always had them. He thinks they aren't the same rubber compound as before as he's not getting the same life out of them. He has about 65k on the now and I'd say they are less than half. He does a lot of highway driving though, But he travels same offroad stuff when we are hunting, his are a lot more $$ than mine too. He has the 20" ones too. They do have a good hard sidewall that you can run low air pressure.


Thats what I've delt with, Might be better out there to I dont know.

Great in snow mud wet roads will pick up throw stones

Would like to try Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ

BG Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 - those are on my Silverado 20". They are not that much more than the 18".

You just missed the CT sale on those.

I run Cooper AT3 4S in 275/55/20 on my Tundra. They're a great all around All Terrain tire. Not as aggressive as the BFG KO but much quieter and smoother ride.
The Coopers are decent in snow as a non-winter tire.
I've never had an All Terrain tire that I felt was actually good in winter conditions.

I had a set of those Mickeys and would only recommend them if you go off road often. They rode harsh and were way too noisy for everyday driving.

The BFGs are nice, I just put on some Toyo open country, lots of guys I know love them and they seem to last.

X2....Great all around tire

I have the BFG tires right now. I used them during last winter, and they were pretty good in snow and ice. They are good on wet roads too. I've also had the Wrangler Duratrac tires on a previous vehicle and I really liked them. They are much better off-road that the BFGs due to the more open tread pattern. I think they are also a bit cheaper. If you don't do much off-roading, the BFGs are a good choice. I can't comment on the other two options you mentioned.

I went with all weather tires (not all season), these are winter tires, spring, summer and fall. They are a bit more but not much and last just as long.
I have discovery tires.

I put over 100k on my truck every year so pretty much new tires every year. I have tried all on your short list and they are all decent but Duratracs seem to work best for what i do (combination of highway, rural gravel, and moderate off-road conditions). If Duratracs not available my next choice would be the K02s.

I work in the bush and put over 65,000 km/ year. I also tried all the tires you mentioned and the Duratrac are by far the best choice IMO, my second choice would be the General.

I have the General Grabber on my RAM 1500 now, there ok but find not the best in the snow, got three years out of them. I use to have the BF Goodrich TA KO2 (bought used) and liked them more for the traction. I currently have a brand new set of BF Goodrich TA KO2's sitting in the garage to be mounted.

The 2019 bolt pattern has changed compared to older models. Why not look at what the smallest steel wheel size you can use, maybe 17's and get the right size of tire to keep the speedo correct. I bought 17" steel wheels for mine at the dealer, cheaper than anywhere else. Then you can use the 17 or 18 tires that are cheaper.

I put Hankkook Dynapro At2 on my Tundra, love them! Can’t beat the price either $$ imo

X2 I was reading thru before I posted but this is what I was going to suggest too. A 30 inch tire is a 30 inch tire, only the metric size is different. For example a 265/65R/17 tire is 30.6 inches but so is a 265/65R/16.

A smaller rim with more side wall has to benefit of a smoother ride, less chance of tire damage from curbs( rocks etc) and allows you to air down for a better foot print and traction is bad condtions....As in trying to drive ( slower of course) in a heavy snow or muddy and soft sand.

What tire size are your factory tires?

The correct size for the 16 inch tire to get the same diameter is:

Where
A1 is the tread width (265)
B1 is the profile ratio (70)

I've got a year on a set of BF Goodrich T/A Sport LT tires and find them to be a decent all weather tire.

I am on my 4th set of KO2's. I have run them exclusively for 10 or so years now. Every set I have owned has given me 100,000 km plus of use with zero issues with quality or performance. The only problem with these is the road noise gets loud around the 85-90,000km mark. To be honest I only ever swap the tires because the noise gets annoying. Real good snow and ice performance, as well as off roading (not mudding but backroads and moose camp use)

The Goodyears are decent as I have a friend that has them and likes them but I have boycotted Goodyear for personal reasons due to their anti #bluelivesmatter stance. I was not impressed with their politicizing of issues and reprimanding employees for having an opposing view.

I've been on bush roads all my life, driving all 4 seasons both on the job and recreationally. Probably have driven on just about every brand of tire made. But I got onto the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 18" a number of years back and they are just about the best tire I could ever find to suit my kind of driving. Lots of height and lots of traction. I even took my Silverado to Texas a few times on those tires and was more than satisfied with how quiet they were. I'm sure there's better somewhere out there but I've yet to find them.

I put Toyo Open Country ATII 8 ply rated on my 2012 GMC 2 years after purchase and when traded in 2018 they still looked almost new. Mostly highway driving, some back country, approx. 25k/yr. I put the same but 6 ply rated on my 2018 F150 Super cab. Now have over 55k on them and still look new tread wise. I don't do as much trailering as I used to.

I wouldn't go without a totally dedicated set of winter tires. I've never found any "all season" tire that is as good as a proper snow tire. The big difference I notice is stopping distance in below minus 10 weather on snow packed or icy roads, and better grip when accelerating away from a stop/intersection. Steel rims are only about $50 a pop for my Tundra. ABS hardly ever comes on when I'm running snows. For all season tires, the best I've run on my Toyotas are Coopers. Worst were Hercules.

Fenelon, you sound just like my old man.;) He runs winter tires and rims on his Tundra. I have a Tundra also but I run “ all seasons” year round. Hankooks. He said the same the about the ABS rarely comes on. You older guys are wiser ...I guess:)

Duratrac tires are great and grip far better than most but they get noisy as hell when the are half worn.

BF's never held up on my 2500 Chevy but I've got them on my new F150 and am loving them.

Ran Falken Wildpeak tires on the chev and they were great in snow, lasted long, rode well and were quite inexpensive. The only downside to the wild peak AT3 was the mud performance was pretty crap compared to some others.
