Looking for info regarding the Klondike Hunting Group est 1936 that hunts in the Marlborough Forest.
They have posted signs all over a section of the woods ( just with the name of the group on an orange sign with a picture of a buck ). No indications of private property. I have a theory but I could be way off.
Any info would be appreciated.
Probably they don't own the land, they might own some, but regardless as long as they don't have a no trespassing sign up they are not breaking any laws. Personally myself if I know a group of people actively hunt a specific area then I move on and find my own area. Lot's of room for everyone else.
Are you trying to move into that spot?
What road is this off of?

I don't see the point of posting group signs. My theory is they are trying to lock up the area without actually owning the land.

Personally I don't look at it the way you do. I bunch of guy's and who knows how many probably have been there for a long time. The signs just indicate they are there.
I would look for another place as there is lot's off room in that forest.
If you had established an area there how would you like it if I set up 100 feet from you on the same field?
Posting group signs is common in NB just for this exact reason.
I know off the top of my head several fields that are not being hunted at all, I would suggest you look harder.
This is not South Ontario and there is lot's of Unknown crown land, I'm hunting a piece 38 km's from me and it has 3 other hunters besides my group.

I've seen those signs too. I believe there is an area of private property around the area where the signs are posted, but my recollection was that the signs were also posted on public land. I think there may also be a couple of leased areas near there, but when I looked into it, I could not find any recent information. Maybe try calling the City of Ottawa, but good luck getting anyone that will/can answer your questions. If you will be hunting in the archery or muzzleloader seasons, I wouldn't worry about them, as long as you can verify you are on public land (try checking the Ottawa GIS site). I've run into a large group once during the rifle season (not sure it was them) - it was pretty far from the area with the signs. Mix of jerks and one or two decent guys. One of the jerks told me not to shoot any deer running in front of their dogs. In the end, I just went in to the spot I had set up and been hunting through the entire archery season prior to the rifle season and hunted as I normally do. The dogs had already been through there, so needless to say, I didn't see anything that evening. That's one of the things to consider too - they probably run dogs, so the hunting might not be what you'd expect if you are too close to the areas they are hunting.
I'll just add - it is a big forest. For safety reasons, if you can find another spot to hunt during the rifle season, that would probably be best. Maybe take a drive or walk around during midday and see if you can talk to one of them to see what the deal is.
I have found several spots that i have established a presence in ( all of which are a considerable distance away from this area ).
Like I said I don't want to step on anyones toes.
It is, for the most part, a public forest. I guess I have a problem with the sense of entitlement.
It's a common practice of many hunting groups to post notice signs of organized hunting on sections of public land asking other hunters to respect their area. Although the signs are advisory only and have no force of law,it's only common courtesy that others not interfere and ruin the hunt, not unlike the unwritten rule (gentleman's agreement) in most areas where duck blinds built on lakes and bog edges for the exclusive use of the builder only until noon on opening day. I don't necessarily agree that there's a "sense of entitlement" attached to it,just local long standing tradition.Quote:

What if I found your spot where you were baiting and knew you show up at 7 so I go there at 6, that would be very disrespectful.
Unlike Southern Ontario there is lot's of crown and public forests in the Eastern Ontario. If you find a spot that is actively being used is it so hard to move on and look someplace else? This is why I don't tell anyone about all the hidden areas of crown that I know about. Now I am even more committed to not telling anyone.
Very few people will ever find these areas, either.

These signs all went up in the last week.
I was just hoping that someone knew a member and I could talk to them. Nothing more intrusive than that.
And just so you know GreatWhite I have a great deal of respect for other hunters.
There could be 20 people in that group for all you know.
I still see that your are the one being unreasonable.
I guess I come from a different time when hunters respected where others were hunting.
Like I said this is exactly why I will not tell others of the crown I know of.

Well your view ( as you see it ) is skewed. Let me guess... you are from a different time.
Ok - So the city of Ottawa had a Marlborough Forrest Management which expired in 2010, within this document it listed all the authorized leases contained within. I will list them below. I have not been able to find a new plan, despite writing to COO and have never gotten a response to the subject. I have asked for current copies of active, old and new leasing since 2010.
It has been my experience and you will see by the list below only 3 Concession and Lots , are the only authorized hunt camps that I can find.
Further to this, if you use https://maps.ottawa.ca/geoottawa/, you can turn on and off layers to identify private property parcels on the edges of MB, and only 1 parcel inside the MB is private property.
It is also been my experience that all "SIGNED" private (except said approved leases), are in fact not private property, however - I have to premise that with I cannot locate anymore current info, and city is not answering questions, or providing documents to prove/disprove.
What I have experienced, armed with all info, I have confronted all the claimers of private property and proved them wrong, asked them to call the police, have called the police myself, have called/Emailed MNR (with no results) to fix the problem or ask them to remove signage.

Probably guys who have been there for a long time and don't want anyone in there. Its most likely not their land if there are no trespassing signs on it. As a guy said above it'll prob be better to move on and look for another spot. It's not worth the time or arguments with guys like that. They think because they've been hunting there for so long its their forest which is not true at all. If you didn't buy the land or lease it youre not entitled to say who can hunt on it.
If you do end up going in there and they give you problems just call a CO. Its not worth the BS tho so I would move on.

As a guy living in Northern Ontario, I’m finding this situation bizarre. I can understand people posting private land, but the notion of erecting signs on Crow land indicating an intent to hunt it at some point in the future is weird. As much as I would like to hunt areas of Crown land exclusively, it’s first come - first served. There’s a silent understanding up north that a hunter will give another hunter a wide berth, but don’t hoard an area and take obvious measures to keep people out. If you act like a dink, someone will call you on it.
I realize it is first come first serve, but if a group of people are hunting an area would you not stay away? How would you feel If I happened upon your spot and you came there Monday morning only to find me sitting in you stand and my buddy sitting in one of your friends stand.?
In NB it was common to post where you were hunting on crown and I think some do that for Moose in Quebec as well. I would treat it as moving along to find myself another area where there are no hunters. There is a lot of crown land. Some people just see moving into where other people are as a free ride.

Only thing youre teaching new hunters is thats the normal and they should do the same to someone who hunts in "their" spot when they find one.

It can happen, I would move on. That's why we plan to begin scouting out these new grounds we found as well, so that we have back up plans.
I like to think that most hunters are respectable and if they see someone hunting a specific area they will move along. Has worked most of my life.
They group I hunted with for more then 10 years, I was invited into the group because I asked if they minded if I used their stands the second week when they were done.
They said nobody had ever asked before, so because I was very friendly they asked if I wanted to join their group. They were all French and I was the only English guy.
They treated me very well, I didn't have much in the way of gear back then and didn't have much money. They all owned construction companies. They helped me build a blind and
let me use their ATV's. It was fun being with them. Several of them have now stopped hunting now they were quite a bit older then me.
Occasionally I still run into some of them. Really miss hunting with them.
I generally find that if I treat others nicely I get treated nicely. :)

All I know is I wouldn't be happy if I was scouting all summer/fall long and suddenly you see signs put up in the last week of October of someone "claiming" a section of public land for themselves.

People hunting in Marlborough (including the group who placed the signs) need to realize that it is in everyone's best interest to get along with each other. Personally I think the days of hunting here are numbered due to the proximity to Ottawa, the fact that the area is "managed" by the city of Ottawa, and the large number of non-hunting users.
What this means from a practical point of view is that sometimes, people have to give a little to keep the peace. The guys who placed the signs should stop doing this and do what most others do - hunt in a manner that is safe and that treats all hunters and other users with respect. On the flip side, hunters who come upon other hunters using an area should move on to a different area, at least during the time that the other hunter is there.
I usually put up a couple of temporary stands in the forest just prior to the archery season. I don't post the area around these stands with "RF2 Hunt Club". Last year while going in to hunt the area during the rifle season I came across 2 guys who were new to the area. I chatted with them for a bit, mentioning that I had a couple of stands in the area. They said that they thought they found them earlier that day. Later on, in the evening of that same day, I went to set up in one of the stands, and who do I find sitting on the ground about 30 yards from my stand? One of the two guys of course. I went and said Hi, but then I left and went to my other stand. What else can you do? Make a big deal and be an idiot? Not for me, even though some would say that the guy showed a lack of etiquette. I even chatted with his buddy when I came down from my other stand at the end of the evening.
I hope that other hunters will show me the same courtesy if I find myself on the wrong end of the etiquette equation next time.
I don't agree with locking down a huge block of public land. That seems ridiculous. A duck blind posting covers a relatively small area for 1 day of a long season.
Public land belongs to everyone and I've had hunts interrupted by hunters and non hunters alike and greet them with respect as that's just a part of public land use.
If you are prepared for possible confrontation, hunt wherever you want if it's public. For all you know that sign was for a scavenger hunt.
And that is why I won't tell anyone about the crown land I have discovered. Those people can stay confined to Marlborough Forest.
Someday I might find a new person who deserve to know where some of this land is.

That's not the way you came off on your first post and that is why I only tell people about well known spots. I won't tell people where to find crown outside of there for the exact reason you portrayed. I once took a fella many years ago to show an area to and after we were done I asked him to not hunt anyplace near my stand, he said to bad it was crown and he could hunt where he wanted (I actually had no plans to hunt there, I was testing him). Not a great way to find new hunt areas by moving into where someone else is currently hunting.
But outside of Marlborough Forest, I have decided I will not give information, with the thousands of ac of land I just cannot for the life of me understand why someone would try to squeeze in where someone else is hunting. I guess I have high standards and I am teaching my son the same way, my hunting partners are all the same.
Yes people do put up fake signs, but you did not say they were No trespass signs, were they? In several provinces it is normal to put up a sign. In Quebec and NB they do it for Moose and some do it for deer in NB. Personally I would like to see the idea adopted here. Would save me time when scouting out an area, to make sure I am not staking out an area that someone already hunts.

When I was younger I loved to hunt ducks and the accepted practice was that if you built a duck blind, you would mark it with your name and that gave you first dibs on it on opening day. (I would have marked the stand first with an identifier). My course of action would depend on the situation as it unfolded.
i have a favourite moose hunting spot that some friends and I have hunted for a number of years. Although we set up camp at the trailhead a few days before the season, we realize that another group could set up ahead of us, or just go by our camp and hunt the area regardless. We don’t have any false notions that we have exclusive dibs to the area. If someone else showed up, we would try to come to an agreement to share the area safely.
Putting up signs to claim an area is not the same thing as actively hunting. it just shows interest in an area without physical occupation. How would I know how many guys are in the club and how would I know if the area that they staked out is reasonable?Quote:

Have you given any consideration to the potential that the OP was the one "actively" hunting the area since he spent so much time scouting and the group that posted the signs were moving in on him? Or maybe both groups were but kept missing each other, and the only way he knows someone was looking at the same parcel of land as him was the fact he saw a sign put up.
The OP was asking if anyone knew who they were so he could speak with them, I think that is a wonderful idea. In post #14 he tried to explain that once again and in post #16 you replied that was not how you saw it and suggested, once again he move on. Maybe it is the others who should move on. It may be common practice in Que & NB and anywhere else to "post" your spots, but in my experience and by judging by the comments here, not so much in Ont. Here in Ont we like to let each other know where groups are hunting by talking to each other face to face.
I believe that part of scouting an area is not only looking for sign but also talking to the other users and hunters in the area. That is how you learn where camps have been set up for years, where the members may be at any given time, what are they hunting for? if deer are they there 1st week? 2nd? both? Bow? Rifle? weekdays or weekends etc.. that is how you learn how you can work/hunt together or avoid each other if necessary. Should I really avoid an area all together for an entire season just because someone nailed a sign to a tree?
I just like so many here hunt crown land as well, in fact I'm so confident in my spot that I leave a portable stand and two trail cameras out all year round. I'm confident in the fact that even if someone found the spot, they most likely would never find the cameras, and if someone found my stand and really wanted it, all the power to them since it is inaccessible by anything with wheels, at minimum a 20 minute walk and bermed in two spots, so if they want to go through the effort to take it, they can have it. As secret as my spot may be, I know I share it with early and late season bow hunters and the occasional moose hunter. I didn't post no sign, now that I think of it my spot might not be that much of a secret after all, but we all seem to get along and rarely if ever run into each other. That's the thing with the bush, no matter how remote, inaccessible or secret you think your spot it, you never really know who or what was there when you weren't ;)
Every year we have at least 1 or 2 trucks/bikes drive past where we have camp set up and single every one of them do the exact same thing, go up the road and turn right around as soon as they see it's a dead end and they cannot go any further, we can almost set a stop watch to it, on the way back some stop to chat, some politely wave and some completely ignore us as though we aren't even standing ten feet from where they are driving, but we never ever see the same people more than once.
My suggesting to the OP is this, if this is your first year in the Marlborough forest and that is where your heart is set on hunting, absolutely go for it, but if this is in fact your first year do lots of talking, stop and chat with everyone you come across that is willing to share a story or info over a quick smoke/cup of coffee etc. You might not get a deer this year, but you will get something maybe even better, the knowledge of where you can go to get one next year and hopefully for years to come.
I live in the area but unfortunately don't hunt here, otherwise I would help you out as much as I could.

I try to talk to any hunter I see. Not just for info but to also bolster the hunting community/spirit.
Although I may not have been hunting as long as some I know the unwritten rules just as well as anybody.
For me the woods are my happy place. If I shoot something that’s fantastic if not I just look forward to another day in the woods.
FisherMcann I find it shocking the number of people on here who encourage others to try to move in to where someone else is actively hunting. Is this something people regularly do? Do people on here also suggest stealing someone Cams, it wouldn't surprise me. If someone moves into where someone is hunting that same person is probably likely to steal as well. Personally I don't believe in stealing but I guess it must be acceptable.
So people on here thing I am wrong to move on when I see someone place that is actively being hunted. Do you guy's do this on a regular basis because your to lazy to setup your on location?
Who decides who was there first? Lets say I have hunted the same area for years but don't put up signs. I show up a couple of weeks before the season as usual, to have a look around, and find signs on the area I have hunted for years. I am supposed to move on, and leave the area for the 'newbees'? Is it first sign gets the spot? What happens if they put up signs in many different areas , just in case, but can only hunt one of them, at at time. Should those other posted spots , on public land, not be used, because they have laid claim to them? Ridiculous.
GreatWhite you’re missing the point. If indeed the land they post with their signs is public and the objective is to discourage the lands use by others, than that is a slap in the face to all hunters in that area. Crown/public/conservation land etc is for all to enjoy and roam on, intimidating people with some sort of sign etc is wrong. I hunt a variety of public land and like you said people need to space out and not cut in on others spots.
People stealing cams etc has nothing to do with this issue at hand and is simple theft. Hunting public land is blessing and sometimes a curse. Fellas have to come together and work it out or as many other spots have done it will be closed to hunters permanently.
I think most on here are missing my point and I have even been criticized because I would take the high road and move on to find myself another spot. That to me indicates those people are ready to pounce on any spot where someone is actively hunting. As I said I would never do that and nor will my son, but I find it funny how everyone put down what I said. Which indicates they would do that, Maybe I was brought up differently the others on here to respect where I see someone else hunting and move on. I mean there is no shortage of Crown land around here none at all.

Whats the difference? Just because someone has stumbled somewhere and set up there first a couple years ago does not mean they own the spot until they die. A bit off topic, but have you had any luck? I've been hunting there probably for about 10 years. In all that time, I'm embarrassed to say, I have never laid eyes on a buck. I've taken some does, but the bucks seem to be completely nocturnal. It's a frustrating place to hunt because there is a lot of buck sign, even close to the roads (sometimes literally right beside the road), but because of the constant activity there, these bucks must be out only at night.Quote:

Like I said I guess I was taught differently and it has worked well for me over the years. Even got myself invited to join a group because of it.
I would never take a spot that I know someone is actively using, what if someone took over where I am? Well I would just move on but that would not change my mind. There are tens of thousands of ac to to hunt around Ottawa. So in my opinion and the way I am teaching my son is if you believe someone regularly hunts there then move on to find a place to hunt.
I guess because there is more land then hunters in Ottawa I fail to see the reason why anyone would not move on. But to each their own. Everyone is allowed to decide for themselves.
But I have prepared for the possibility of someone finding where I hunt and we are already picking areas to Scout out for next year so that we have a back up plan.

Anyone that is an ethical common sense hunter, myself included, would move on to a different spot should they find out someone is actively hunting the area. For courtesy and for sure safety reasons. This thread is not about that. Its about the OP asking about posted signs on what he believes is public land. In my hunting career I’ve had multiple times where I have entered crown land and found another hunter, no biggie move on to another spot. Had that same hunter posted signage on said crown land stating he is staking claim to the area for the season I would most definitely have an issue with it. Anyone that enjoys crown land hunting opportunities should. If a guys truck is parked yeah common sense would dictate move along to another area. If signs are present and no vehicles/atv’s around then I’d say good to go hunting wise and tough luck for the guy that shows up. Hopefully he has the decency or courtesy to do as most hunters would and adjust his location as to not affect either of our hunts.
Access to hunting property is literally the biggest threat facing today’s hunters. Posting/signing/staking claim to property that you don’t hold a title to and discouraging others enjoying it whether hunting/birdwatching/hiking/mushroom picking etc goes against what ethical people do.
If people are posting a sign where they are hunting in the immediate area that day then more power to them and gives notice to others that active hunting is taking place and makes sense for everybody safety wise. To post signs on a tract of public land for entire year or season whether or not they are actively hunting the area is deceitful and unsportsmanlike if you took a poll....

It’s simple, you can’t post public land. The intended use is for the public so it’s not yours. That being said common curtesy should apply, if you see other hunters or a vehicle or anything indicating someone is hunting in the area then move on. Even for your own safety and there’s it’s a good idea to move. Keep safe

Those signs aren't anything to be concerned with. Signs like them can be found all over the province,especially,the snow mobile signs that have nothing to do with hunting. Nice signs,though,but,they have absolutely nothing to do with No Trespassing,either. If I were you,I'd hunt the area,anyway. If you run into other hunters,give them a wide berth,wave and keep on truckin'. Don't give "stepping on toes" another thought. It's a big woods and there's room for everyone.Quote:

Orange signs with a buck picture saying 1936 is defintely a hunting group. You sure they don't lease this spot? (I'm guessing not since doesnt say no trespassing)

Would the deer move to a different area ie) could there be an increase in activity in my area due to the deers avoidance ?
On the days during the rifle season that I have hunted in the Marlborough forest, there have been dogs running pretty much every day, especially in the first week. Sometimes it is quieter during the second week. The deer will congregate in certain areas to avoid the hunting pressure, but I have yet to find those areas. You mentioned that you are pretty deep in the bush, so maybe you will see increased activity. In the areas that I have hunted, it's very clear that the deer are only active at night, which was obvious due to the heavy snow during the last 2 rifle seasons. I gave an example earlier in this thread where a guy set up on the ground right near my treestand, causing me to hunt a different stand. There was a lot of snow on the ground at that time. I went back to the treestand on the following morning, and the amount of buck sign around there was unbelievable - this was all left between the time when the other hunter left and when I showed up the following morning. I followed the tracks back, and located where the buck came to dry ground from a large swamp, but I have not set up a stand in that spot this year for various reasons.Quote:

A couple of years ago I was driving through Marlborough Forest scouting some ponds on my way home from scouting for geese when I came to a roadblock set up by the police. The officer checked my licenses and my vehicle for game and then questioned me for several minutes. (Apparently, he was checking for deer poachers and was very suspicious because I was scouting for waterfowl without a shotgun!) Although I am not a deer hunter, the officer suggested that I not think of deer hunting in that particular area (N of Roger Stevens, E of Dwyer Hill). Apparently, a group of hunters (he didn't say who) treated that particular area as their private hunting preserve and had vandalized other hunter's and police vehicles in past seasons. Don't know if this is the same group, just passing on the warning I received.
^ That's the area where I hunt. I've never had any issues like that (vandalism). Last year though during the rifle season, there were some guys who decided to drive around in their Argo after the end of legal shooting time with their guns uncased, no trigger locks, going from field to field. They were acting pretty strange too, talking about lots of MNRF presence in the area (I think they were fishing for info). There were a couple of us who witnessed this. A couple of weeks later during the muzzleloader season I got checked by a CO on my way out of the forest. I was happy to see them checking people.

I, fortunately, I have never seen any one running dogs in there. I have had a bird dog come through once when I was set up.
I have heard the stories of the vandalism too. I really don’t want to be in there but it’s close to home and I haven’t been pursuing private land lately.

I feel the same way. I mostly hunt private land relatively close to the forest, but I occasionally go to there to change things up, or when the private property isn't producing. There is some that is easily hunted. I avoid the easy stuff.
ALOT of swamps and cagey brush.
There is a few parcels of private land but as others have stated it is hard to find current information. There is also some VERY protective hunters in there.
To be honest the best experience I’ve had so far is been in talking with a group from Quebec. They are in there a lot and have a ton of bait sites. We exchange hunting site locations and I’ve never seen them where I hunt and I can guarantee they’ve never seen me.
That sounds a lot like The Ganaraska Forest near our place. It's about 18K acres,but,only 2/3 can be hunted. It's like a giant motorcross track all summer and fall. It's been virtually destroyed which is really sad because it was a provincial reforestation area until it was ceded to the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority in the early 90's.
