Passing Lanes

Spent lots of time on 69 and 17 in the past week. It seems some dunderheads don't get passing lanes so here are some helpful hints:

1) If you are dawdling along 10 under the limit do not speed up in the passing lane to prevent other vehicles from going by you only to slow down again once the lane ends.

2) It's called a "passing lane" for a reason. Either pass or let other cars pass. Once you have passed GTFO. "O" meaning "over."

3) Passing lanes do not go on forever. There is a sign letting you know the merge is coming in 300 meters. Do not block the other vehicle because you can't pass quickly enough (See rule #2.)

4) Upcoming passing lanes are marked with signs saying they are 2, 5 or 10 kms ahead. Waiting a few minutes until you get to one is better than passing on a double solid line.

Oh boy, this should be an entertaining thread.

Some people believe they should enforce the speed limit themselves or they are generally oblivious to the world around them. It certainly makes for some dangerous maneuvers from others that are impatient. I spend a lot of time behind the wheel and see some amazing things caused by people blocking the passing lane including high speed passing on the shoulder or splitting between cars sitting side by side. I find the farther north I drive the more etiquette is practiced on the highways, just my observation.

It's a problem that will never be solved so I suggest traveling in the off hours to save your sanity.

Something I was told when learning to drive, helps me relax. "Think of the biggest idiot you know, they have a driver's license"

I spend far too much time on the highway and have felt all the frustration you speak of.

I just love it when you get the big rigs and their 105km/h races eating up the highways for miles.

Just the other night I was driving home in the rain and I caught up to a cop, 40 in an 80.... of course I got the cherries when I passed.

There are a lot of people on the highways that have no business being there. I for one am all for a special licensing system where you must prove diligence driving in bad weather, if you can't pass the test you don't get to drive in snow, rain, fog, etc. I swear its like people think snow makes the highway change places or something.

I hate those driver's that speed up when you pass them lol. Yeah they do the speed limit or just under until you are passing them . Then they step on it lol your doing a 100 now and they are right on your but for about 30 seconds then the slow down again and repeat the process Grrrr lol.

I’ve gone to therapy for too long to get involved in this thread.


All of the above raises my blood pressure. Some people need a refresher on everything, not only passing lanes. I can’t stand people sitting under the speed limit and not moving over. Competence is one thing to prove, but comfort while driving needs to be a requisite as well. Some people turn into nervous wrecks and it will impede on everyone’s driving. This causes accidents. Know your vehicle and it’s capability then get comfortable and proficient.

Campers! Mother trucking campers skin my Azz more than anything! Lined up in a row, fumbling their way along at half the speed limit and with vehicles that have no business towing an atv let alone a camper.

My favorite is the jackass who follows you all the way in the passing lane, then when he sees the merge 300 meters ahead suddenly wakes up and decides now he wants to pass.
And I just love cutting those guys off who try to pass near the end of the merge. Damned if they're going to force me onto the shoulder at the last minute at 100 kph.

That's the one that pi$$es me off. Slow moving vehicles suddenly speed up when they hit the passing lanes and then slow down when they end.

This is one of my favorites as well. I like to use cruise control and these clowns always seem to come along and either get you at the end of the lane or as you are approaching a slower vehicle you'd like to pass then sit beside you.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's the fogies that pull into the passing lane with a Klick to go and take up the last of the passing lane at 80!

The best part is the QEW down Niagara way - I do not why they increased the speed limit to 110kms/hr because it is next to impossible to do this unless you weave through the traffic like an idiot. Cars in the left hand lane doing 100 - 110kms/hr and cars passing them on the right doing the nominal 120kms/hr and they are clueless.

Not saying anything for fear of retaliation but there is definitely a pattern of traffic heading out of a certain metropolitan area in the AM and returning in the PM on Sat and Sunday.

Or the ones that brake when they see the police [emoji23] like really lol.

Or just drive the exact speed limit when they are following behind them.

Not I lol. 10 over with them trailing behind me . Are they really going to pull me over for doing 90 in a 80? They haven't yet even when they are doing radar [emoji23].

Technically the speed limit says maximum so in theory we shouldn't even be going over [emoji6]and should be doing a little under as it would be the maximum speed aloud [emoji1787]

I watched a guy pull around an unmarked van that was sitting in the left lane on the 407 a few years ago and brake check him.... they do hide those lights pretty good. I'll bet they didn't let him off with a warning!

I passed one last winter he only followed me a few km. A few years back passed a cop that was following a slow transport. I passed both of them he immediately came with me but never stopped as I never broke the law It was a 2 lane on hwy 12 lol

I have had 2 of them pass me as well.
Way back coming back from kinmount. Was doing just over 100 in a 80. This car was catching up fast as I crested a hill I wanted to make sure I doing just under 100 . Well this car that was coming up on me passed it was opp I was in shock for a minute then tried to catch up but no go lol.

Another time on 48 I was doing 95 in a 80 had a cop on my tail for about 4 or 5 minutes I slowed down to 70 in a 60 and he passes me in a no passing lane lol.


Now the York region cops are just randomly placing an empty car as decoys . They had one set up at the bank the other day that was robbed last week. I guess just an empty car is good to keep people in check . When will we ever know if the driver is around [emoji23]. Where do they go lol [emoji57].


I have really slowed down over the past 5 years . A clean record on the tickets now . But I can't say I will never get another one but definitely don't drive like the way I used to.

Just don't go more than 20 over to pass them and all should be good.

I got one before going down a hill the cop was ahead and got me with the reverse Radar. He knew I passed a car at the top of the hill we watched me slow down but the hill put me back up to 102 all is well lol. 20 over is like 50 bucks if you fight it you usually only pay 20 something lol.

Best I had was taking a tractor down 37 through a construction zone, well after the “fines doubled” sign this guy passes me on a double yellow with traffic coming the other way and a cruiser with its lights on 50’ away. That officer gave me the sweetest smile when she waved the guy over
