triple 7 pellets- 3 of them?

im still very new to the ML game. i usually shoot triple 7 pellets-- throw two down the barrel with a sabot.

my question here is why some add the third pellet. im reading they are looking for more speed... but losing accuracy.
does it hit harder? does it shoot further?

i really need to sight mine in at 100 yards and start shooting 150 and aiming for the 200 yard targets. this deer season taught me me that! I usually sight in at 50.

Ya, I use only 2 triple 7's with a 300 SST bullet and get good accuracy at 100 yds...
Mind you, I have never shot it passed 100 yds at a live or paper targets...

Most in line ML's users find that the ideal powder load is 80-85 gr. Two pellets are already more than is ideal. You are already giving up accuracy for convenience. Not a large amount and not overly bad for 50 yds targets.

Hodgins use to have a Warning on T7 loose powder NOT to exceed 120 grs...3 pellets would do that.

You gain nothing more than a sore shoulder using 3 pellets HaHa..

i was thinking that! im just new to this all. ive taken a deer with it already but id love to be able to start target shooting at 150 to get ready for the december ML hunt!

As others have said, 3 pellets gives one hell of a thump to your shoulder and tends to spray bullets all over the map.

Something you can try would be 777 Magnum pellets and a lighter projectile to get you out there. I'm currently running 2 777 Magnums and a 350 grain Bor lock bullet. I have a pretty impressive rainbow trajectory but I'm comfortable to 150 yards and to be honest I haven't tried further. I'm sure if I stepped down to a copper bullet I could easily achieve over 200 yard accuracy, switch to loose powder and tighten my groups further.

i see the copper bullet on cabelas. an interesting idea. out to 200 yards and folks are reviewing that they are pegging them at 230. i just might be tempted enough to try it out!

Traditions has their own line of bullets out now too, im interested in giving them a try. The smackdown "bleed" is designed to he shot over 200 yards with a standard charge.

Yup, thats the red box. I didn't get a chance to chronograph the sledgehammers I'm shooting but it would give me a bump of 280 fps over 2 standard 777 Pellets with 275 grain SST's

You are thinking 3 x 30 gr or 3 x 50?.
As others said-3x50 is way to much, I tried way back 30+50 and 3 x 30,but stuck with 2 x 50.

Two 50’s of the triple seven is plenty. I tried three twice. That was enough for me. I’m shooting the 285 grain Barnes coppers. 100 yard accuracy is great. I can see no reason to use more powder. I know the blackhorn is the Gucci stuff now but 777 is so easy to use and shoots reliably well. No need to change it up!

I tried out BH209 last year...was not overly impressed with the performance and definitely not the cost.

i have 50s. so you'd be running 150 worth of charge. i dont plan to do it but was wondering the rationale.

A buddy runs 3 50gr white hot pellets in his thompson centre and says it shoots good. I'm betting he didn't even try 2 or he'd probably get better groups or at least as good. But because it states that he can shoot 3 pellets he automatically thinks it must be better. We weighed 2 50gr pellets and it was closer to 80gr than 100gr and how much of that is adhesive holding the pellet together? I'm guessing if someone shooting 3 pellets tried shooting 150gr of loose powder they'd be in for an eye opener.

Those will be the volume of the charge not weight.
