Are you ready, for possible power outages lasting extended periods?

Thought I would start a new thread on something new.

How prepared are others for possible long power outages , food supplies, water etc?

I went through the ice storm of 1998 and we were without power for a little more then 2 weeks at the time my wife was also pregnant at the time.

We had to leave the house as we had no power or heat all that has changed now.

These days I have a medium size generator Coleman 5500 I also have the parts to rebuild the carburetor just encase. I use to run many extension cords
to my various house needs but have since upgraded and added a generator panel so I can directly plug my generator into the house. I currently keep 80 liters
of gas on hand but intend to add another 40 liters and might also add a propane conversion to my generator.

I also recently purchase a second freezer (Partially because our current one is 32 years old). I have almost filled the second freezer and we rotate the food in them using the oldest first. We keep a large supply of canned goods as well which are rotated as we eat them as well. I don't keep water as we are gravity fed but yes the tower could lose it's supply, but I know where to get water that's good to drink.

We also heat with wood and I have 30 face cords out back.

Oh and got my new LG Heat Pump running good for minus -25.

You should be good for about a year more than the average person ...

We have a big generator enough to hook up all the fridge and freezers, tv, radio heaters and more lol. The maze of extension cords though lol.

40 gallon of gas on hand we are ok for a little bit. We hooked every thing up this summer on a hot day after the power went out most of the day.

I still use the old 35 kw PTO generator that used to be able to run all the barns when we were still milking. Ran it a bunch yesterday hooked on the old 3130 at the pole switch. Probably should think about something smaller and newer but it actually seems pretty reasonable on diesel compared to the smaller gas ones. Gonna have to put a new meter on it though, the needle wasn’t moving yesterday so I had to guess a bit

Yeah I use to run lot's of extension cords.
Then I found a generator panel for a good price, bought that and had a friend install it.

The panel has six 120 breakers and they are connected to the 6 designated breakers in the main panel.
Sump pump
Freezer
Fridge
Just so happens that on all 6 breakers happens to control most lights and tv + computer.

The panels cost new about 300.00 I lucked out and got mine on ebay for 120 bucks.

If you're going to add a propane conversion, realize they can lower the output by up to 30% and can be more difficult to start and run in cold weather. If you are going dual fuel then I would be tempted to run on regular gas until that runs out, heaven forbid.

Generator, enough firewood for 2 winters, 1200L of gas and lots in the freezer with even more food strolling through the yard if needed.

How do you store 1200 lts of gasoline..is it rotated?

I'm going to keep x3 5 gal Jerrys for each of the two generators...The specs say that will give me about 24 hrs continuous run time each or about 4-6 days each...then I'm at the mercy of the supply system to refill them.

Well our power here went out for almost 20 minutes the other day and I almost fainted.This should never happen in the City.

If it happens again I will be selling this joint for 1.3 million and moving up to my off grid cabin for the duration.I will live off the land and heat everything with firewood.If I am a lousy hunter I will use some of the 1.3million to buy "organic" meat from traditional people as well as fish and of course gas.LOL cigarettes I don't need but my wife might need some edibles to calm her nerves after I come home empty handed from hunting time and time again.

I will be inviting all my Liberal friend's up north to help with the firewood cutting and hauling,but I will have to charge them a fee for the fresh air and use of the cabin.

If your inviting Liberal Friends up to help you, I guess not much work would get done. eh?:moose:

Many up north have a big barrel shape tanks (on it's side). Use the gas for their vehicles also.

Yea, on the farm and we had the ME (coloured) gas tank, but if you lived in an urban environment trying to stock pile 1200 lt would be difficult and hard to rotate.

Back up generators really are a temporary stop gap due to the restriction of fuel storage.

Oh I don't know about that I cut a 80 foot poplar tree that was to close to the cabin after my short deer hunt.Had it down cut up and branches piled in 5 hours.Had the branches burned the next night,all done,no problem.Used my trusty Dolmar Sachs
chainsaw with 16inch bar.LOL and that was cutting just for fun.

I am currently in an urban environment however the family farm is a 7 minute drive away. I have several fuel tanks in an environmental catchment. All I have to do is make a quick trip out with a Jerry can or 5. Rotation of Supreme gas isn't a big deal given I have put over 8000 liters through the vehicles since June.

Wish I had a 1000 liter tank, but if I did I would basically end up paying for the wife's gas and then the son's in a year.

Thats the cost of having the tank. In the end I don't have to worry about ever running out. I save a bunch on the diesel but to be honest gas usually is on par to a penny more than the gas station.

I wouldn't go the canned goods route after seeing what I had in my fridge at camp yesterday. Once cooler weather in the fall rolls around I turn the propane off for the upcoming winter months. My wife opened a can of mushroom soup that had frozen and thawed a few times and it had to be tossed out. So, its dried foods from now on.

Just came through a 52 hour power outage down here by Lake Erie. Coleman 5000/6000 generator was hooked into house via a 220 volt cable . Worked ok but generator has a slight surging in RPM which seems to affect voltage output. I read it could be a governor problem . Lots of firewood on hand and cupboards stocked up pretty good. Will fine tune my system before next big storm. Sunday's storm it us like a tonne of bricks down here !

Surging can also be a result of dirty jets in the carb or debris floating around in there.

The first thing you can do is give it a healthy dose of seafoam, generators are notorious for condensation in the gas tank.

Not arguing your point but just wondering why you think that. I've not experienced that issue with generators and I have 2 of the critters. I can't see them being any worse than any other small motor that is multi seasonal.

No worries. The reason they are usually worse is because they tend to hold large quantities of fuel in comparison to say, a lawnmower or snowblower. The tank on a large generator usually covers the entire top of the machine which creates far more surface area to collect condensation. Tanks are usually made of metal rather than poly, poly tanks condense at a far lower rate. Lastly and this is not true in all cases but for some reason generators seem to sit in the garage with less than full tanks.

Which is why I keep my fuel tank full and use a fuel stablizer (Sea Foam). The surging could be caused by the carb as well and if it is sea foam will clean it out. I also run my generator twice a year Spring and fall and plug a bunch of stuff into it so it's under load then I run it for a mininum 1 hour sometimes 2 hours. It's the one piece of equipment that when I need it better run.

Had that same model of genny years ago and it ran for a good number of years Ok until that problem arose.The small engine guy was stumped but I think some type of circuit board was the problem.Ended up buying a new Honda as I am totally reliant on the genny for water pump and heating the water.

The wife and I have doubled down on preparedness since last March, when all this uncertainty began. Our cabin is the "go to" place where we have a decent supply of the necessary food, water and heat. Lots of wood, a good well, and propane stove for cooking. Generally always have at least 80-100 litres of gas on hand, but would only need it to run the gen a few hours a day to keep freezer cold. Propane fridge would look after the food cooling and always a spare 100# and 60# bottle sitting there ready to hook up.

About 2 yrs ago I asked if any preppers where on this forum. I have been a serious one for 7 years having learned the lessons from Ice Storm 98 and vowing to never put my family in that situation again. Since then I always had 30 days onsite since.

It is interesting to see what you all have done, you are preppers without the words being spoken, however, I suspect Bushmoose is like me.

Yes I have the 1.5 yrs of dried and canned food.

I have a secure water supply now (not when I was in the city only so much room in a townhouse), with the well, with 3 ways to get water out, purify and drink. Same with wheat berries and flour including 3 types of grinding methods, plus a couple hundred pds of flour (does have shelf life), plus 10lbs of yeast. Genset 12K and sub panel was installed 5 weeks ago with 160L of gas stored which is rotated weekly through truck when I head to town once a week.

Still working on the secondary heat source in home wood stove soon, 10 X 30lbs propane tanks, 20 X 20lb tanks, numerous 1 lb tanks, plus butane stove with 60 cans of butane.

Antibiotics (10 Most common) 1 year supply stored and sealed for 10 yrs life
Medical supplies for role 1 First aid kit
Firearms and ammo - and sundry supplies for reloading - self defense of food sourcing
Spices, flavor enhancers to spice up dried goods, by the 5 gallon pail
Skilled in meat preservation, cheese making, canning and dehydrating
Been gardening small scale for 4 yrs and now ready to scale up on 5 acres for self sufficiency
TP/Bady wipes for 2 yrs yrs
lots of alcohol
Small scale solar set up with plans to off grid within 5 yrs
Seed saving and seed collection - last 2 yrs
I never left the house for 57 days of Wave 1 to shop - until I just had to have fresh garlic. Two forum members know where I live..and that's good for mutual aid.

The alcohol storage is not for drinking, it is for trading and disinfecting. We dont drink much at all. Venezuela is what convinced me to step it up and the threat of incoming socialism which is happening now.

We went through the whole how big should we buy for our home, the prime concern was the well pump was 220V. The current 12K has a Max output of 57 amps, which is more then plenty for well, but when the furnace and hot water heater came on it caused fluctuations in the 9000W (37 amps) we had at first. This caused the dirty wave form, which was also an issue for our propane furnace which has a DC motor and requires clean power. By stepping up the AMPS we have resolved the dirty power and fluctuations. All that extra power has drawbacks, as in the full tank is 37 litres...and lasts 8- 12 hours AT half load...lol. It is not clean inverted power and the hertz do fluctuate (minor), but plasma tv and LED TV and computers still run fine. Bonus is this big geny can fully power my 220V stick welder on the side when needed the 2 or 3 times a year I use it. This set up is not meant as long term solution such as months without power, it is designed to meet all our needs during a typical 1-5 day outages for natural disasters. We have a 3500watt honda for those other needs and 4000W around the house/farm.

I'm installing a 6500kw this winter for back up pwr. It has a 30 amp 220 feed cable that will run the well pump and some 15 amp breakers. Should give me what I need for back-up for a day or two till I run out of gas.

A hick-up is in doing a whole house set-up is the legal requirements as set out by Hydro. You have to use a CSA approved Transfer Switch to mechanically isolate the gen input feed from the Hydro feed. And most of them max out at 30 amp, but I understand some come in 40 amp.

A 30 amp restricts you to one 220v cct and x4 120v ccts.

I looked into the GenerLink setup which can be bought for around $1k and another $400 to have it installed professionally. AND even they still limit you to 30/40amps..so you have to throw a few CCT in the panel.

I didn't look into a truly 'whole' house back up system (200 amp), I imagine they're available at some horrendous cost.

I should have bought that 35KW Diesel gen I saw at an auction a few yrs back HaHa.

Come over and see my set up, certified by Master Electrician. The whole house power option can be installed by Authorized OPG contractor ($1800) or you can have done like I did. Does not void insurance is a complete inside disconnect and mirror (ghost) panel set up.

I only need 120 from my generator as I can heat with wood and I do not have a well.

So I use a generac panel that connect directly to my current panel. It has 6 breakers. I connect to the 6 breakers in my panel that I want.
In my case one goes to the I wanted the breakers that control my Sump, Freezer, Fridge and I chose 3 others. Luckily those also send power to various plug and lights including the TV and Computer.

Mine is an older Coleman 5500 / 6000 or something. I have a 50 ft extension cord that plugs into my panel. At some point I will put a inlet outside I have the inlet, just to lazey right now.

I did speak with a guy a few years back, but when he started to quote numbers over $2K I stopped him. I know a few people on long term payment plans ($150/mth) for systems worth $14k. Some have had them for over 10 yrs and they've used them maybe a dozen times for a few hrs till the power failure is fixed.

One of the poorest invests you can make, other than giving the wife peace of mind, which is for some guys worth every penny HaHa..

So far I'm into it for less than $1k including the gen..so I can live with that.

Problem with that unit...I don't think it's CSA approved ( in the specs...country of origin is the US.)

I picked up the Simmons transfer switch ($375) with the CSA sticker, just to be sure I wasn't going to have any hassle when they dig thru the ashes and find it HaHa..

You might be better off just getting an electrician to install a switch and hookup at your meter and feed your existing breaker panel if you get a big enough generator. My meter is at the bottom of the transformer pole, they just put a switch box at the top of the pole with a handle and a plug in at the bottom. It was around $500 4 years ago for a 1000 amp service

Mark, that’s an impressive setup, but wow that’s a big thirsty generator to have for long outages? I chose to have a smaller generator (3000W) and in a long outage plan on rotating appliances/furnace so that I use all the power it is making, but to each their own. I keep around 80L of SeaFoam treated gas and in March I also purchased a Briggs 2000W inverter. I always figure that re-filling gas cans at the same time as everyone else is going to be a problem, so I am only planning on running a genny off and on.

Last fall I was able to run a space heater (1200-1500W), our fridge and furnace, and a few lights with my cheapie $300 Champion.

Good week to post this - some people in our area just got power back last night after being out since Sunday.

A few people I know need power to run sewage lift pumps, for the whole house not just basement bathrooms, and don’t have generators or a care in the world....“can’t afford one, but I’m off to Cuba next month......”

Yup, priority problem and then they cry when the bowls full and I don't mean cherioos.
