Climbing Stands

I am using this down time to look at a new climber. I used an API last year and was not fond of the mounting chain especially in low light conditions - I even dropped the pin a couple of times while trying to assemble it, but that was user error.

I also tried my buddies Summit Viper and it was an amazing stand BUT that wrap around bar was great for sitting but a pain for climbing with a bow or gun. I really liked how the cable secured to the stand - very easy!

I am looking at the following:
- Summit (Viper & Razor)
- Lone Wolf
- X-Stand

I am leaning towards the Summit Viper but wanted to see what everyone is using and get your feedback.

I use a Summit Viper but I find it very noisy to hang. Heavy to haul any distance. I like it's safety during the climb and it's comfort. If you're young and mobile it's the only way to hunt crownland IMO.

I have had an older API and a new model API, the pins on my newer unit came wired to the frame on a short bit of SS wire similar to the way fishing wire is used for terminal connections. I would suggest you use a string to haul your bow up after climbing.

I just love my Summit Goliath, Plenty of room and easy to use, little maintenance required,

What maintenance is required on the Summit?

I started Climber stand recently.My choice was Lone Wolf.
Most "flat"to fold to carry it,so during transportation does not created issues in the bush,light,easy to use.I believe it is also the quietest to set up.
Not the cheapest one.

Try raising and lowering your stuff with a string.Takes nothing and makes the climb so much more enjoyable.

A decade ago I bought a Lone Wolf Alpha Hand Climber and never looked back. No chains or loose metal parts to clang together and super light and portable. If ninjas used tree stands, they'd use a Lone Wolf. Its not a big stand when set up, but its the same size seat and platform as most hang-ons.

I've had a Summit Viper for about 5 years and I still really like it. I bought a army surplus backpack frame which I use to haul the stand in and out. It makes it much more comfortable for that task. I also attach a haul line on each side before I climb up, one attached to my bow/gun and one for my pack. TC

I am old and fat. I have used the Summit Goliath for years. You make some noise climbing but I can climb down almost silently. Hunting witha gun or bow should not affect your climbing because you should only pull up your weapon of choice with a string after being completely setup and tethered.

I have a Lone Wolf which I purchased 20 years ago, and hunted hard with it . Still works as good as the day I bought it. Compact,Light (14.5lbs)and the most quiet one to install and climb with that I have been around. The stand is not a tree Lazy Boy if that is what you are after. I highly recommend the stand for bowhunters

The first tree stand I purchased was a Loggy Bayoo self-climber. It’s cumbersome to carry long distances in the woods and is a bit complicated and noisy to get it around the tree. Climbing is noisy too, and it’s a workout on my stomach and thighs. Once at the right height, you have to cinch straps around the tree to keep it stable. The platform tends to creak if I shift my weight- especially if it isn’t exactly level. On the plus side, it’s roomy and comfortable to sit in, and it comes with a shooting bar which, unfortunately, isn’t very stable. You couldn’t depend on it for s steady rest.

A hang-on stand may be more of a pain to set up, but once it is, climbing in and out is much easier. My 2 cents.

I had a Summit Viper years ago and although it was very comfortable, it just didn't suit where i hunting. I ended up selling it and replacing with several ladder stands, but if i was to get another climber i'd go Summit 100%

Go to a store you can touch and feel all the stands before you buy, most likely you will find Lone Wolf superior..

I used a JX3 hybrid this year for hunting and some climbing sticks... Super comfortable... doubles as a backpack, and quieter than any climber and very safe to use.

I also used a tethrd mantis. Light, safe and more comfortable than a hang on.

Something to think about... all are quiet, easy to use, comfortable and safe. Disclaimer... I do not work for anyone of these but saddle hunting is growing fast in the USA and slow here.

Good advice...and don't forget to actually sit in them...I bought one years ago that looked great, but once I set it up I found it was extremely uncomfortable. The arm side rails were far to snug on my my hips when I was wearing my hunting cloths. Far to restrictive for hunting.

MikePal-i have a LW climber,and replaced the original seat with the Hazmore mesh seat.It makes a world of difference,the stand is lighter,slimmer,and when setting it up in the three there is no FUSS with the seat.
OP-i do also use Trophyline tree saddle.I love that stand too- it is awesome.You may want to try to look at them -alas Trophyline is out from business for awhile by now.Other manufacturers are coming out with new products-see Ontario farmer's posts.The way i hunt I just can not use it everywhere......

I have used a climber hang on and various saddles.
My preference in order for mobile set ups

Jx3 for all day sits
Kestrel or mantis for short sits. 4 hours or less
Sold my hang on and climber

I have a shelf climber and I use it because I primarily hunt on public land. I am leaning towards a saddle this year because myself climber is fairly heavy and hardly advantageous compared to a saddle set up.

Thank you for your other links. I'm going to do some research! My biggest problem is it seems the only place to order this stuff is from the US. On the other hand I have considered just buying a rock climbing harness from MEC and using it.

I have a Summit Viper climbing stand. It works as advertised. The only negative is I do find it a little tight around the shoulders once I have all my hunting clothes on.

Does anyone use a tree stand bow holder that attaches to your stand that would work for a crossbow? This will be something I am looking to add for next year. I currently use screw in hooks that screw into the tree and they work well but it can be awkward to reach behind and grab my bow, especially if a deer sneaks in and I am trying to limit movement.

Ontariofarmer do you or anyone you know successfully use these products with a crossbow? I feel like it would be difficult to use a crossbow while facing the tree as I would be worried about the limbs on the bow interfering with a lot of your shot opportunities.

I use a crossbow. Bad shoulder

It is no problem just either stand and lean back and shoot or use the tree to lean forward with the bow limbs beyond the tree. That said I was not careful just once and my bow limb hit the tree causing a missed shot. It has not happened since
